DAILY RECORD Brendan Rodgers insists Derek McInnes should be bang in the frame to land the top job at Rangers. The Athletic Jarrod Bowen supported England at Wembley as a fan – now he has the chance to play there By Roshane Thomas Jarrod Bowen has never played at Wembley. Back in June 2021, the West Ham United player was in the stands watching England’s 2-0 win over Germany in the round of 16 at Euro 2020. “I signed a couple of autographs outside but that was it,” said Bowen. “I was with a few of my mates and the atmosphere was incredible. With it being the knockout stages and against Germany made it even better. “I loved all of them (the players) as I was watching. Being a footballer, you love football and you love supporting your country and I was just a massive fan, singing the national anthem and all the songs and jumping up and down when England scored. It was a bit mad looking back at it.” The chance to fulfil a childhood dream beckons for the 26-year-old. He has been named in Gareth Southgate’s squad for forthcoming fixtures against Australia and Italy and could earn his fifth and sixth cap at the national stadium. He has gone from being barely recognised to a recognisable name in the space of two years. Bowen, who earned his last cap in June 2022 against Hungary — a game played at Molineux — was overlooked by Southgate for recent fixtures against Ukraine and Scotland. But Bowen responded by scoring in two of his next three league games. The forward, who has been nominated for the Premier League’s player of the month award for September, has registered five goals and two assists across eight appearances. It is Bowen’s best start to a season since joining from Hull City in January 2020. “Jarrod is a lot better than maybe he is given credit for,” said manager David Moyes. He is West Ham’s top scorer and their most reliable offensive outlet. With Michail Antonio sidelined with tightness in his adductor, Bowen was entrusted to play as a centre-forward in the 2-1 win against Freiberg on Thursday. He vindicated Moyes’ decision, providing the assist for Lucas Paqueta’s goal. That pair — and others — impressed as West Ham became the first English side to go 17 European matches, including qualifiers, unbeaten. Bowen could have scored in the win and showcased why he merited his England call-up. His contract expires in the summer of 2025 and talks over an improved deal have lasted more than a year. Although discussions are ongoing, his form is making it an increasingly important issue for the club to resolve. Bowen has grown since his winner against Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final. Having failed to score a header in 2022-23, he has worked on the aerial aspect of his game, as evidenced by his goals against Luton Town and Liverpool. But, more importantly, Bowen’s mindset has changed. Ahead of his England recall, he spoke about wanting to be in the squad and why he will maintain his work ethic if it doesn’t materialise. It is a huge contrast to January when Bowen spoke candidly about his performances. He was overlooked for Southgate’s World Cup squad last November as his struggles in the early stages of 2022-23 saw him go on a run of only two goals in 19 league appearances. “As much as you want to put the World Cup at the back of your mind, you know you are so close, you know it is such a big opportunity that may never come again so, of course, I was playing with a little bit of fear and anxiousness and that is normal. I don’t think I dealt with it very well but I will learn from that. “You are trying to do things safely rather than playing your game. You want to look good instead of doing what you normally do to look good. It’s hard to explain and people listening will just say: ‘Well, you should have just played your game’. “(But) when you know you are so close, you try to play safe and try to not make a mistake so someone can’t say: ‘You didn’t deserve that’. You then end up playing worse than you were. That was the case for me. I am honest about that, I am not going to hide away from it.” Bowen no longer plays cautiously and his performances are on par with his England team-mates. He has scored more league goals than any of Ollie Watkins (4), Callum Wilson (4), Bukayo Saka (4) and Marcus Rashford (1). But Bowen shouldn’t be the sole West Ham player at St George’s Park: James Ward-Prowse’s form was surely also deserving of an inclusion in Southgate’s squad. The midfielder has been overlooked twice this season. The last of Ward-Prowse’s 11 England caps came against Italy in a UEFA Nations League fixture in June 2022. But, in a similar manner to Bowen following August’s squad announcement, Ward-Prowse responded to the disappointment with an impressive performance. He provided his sixth assist of the season last night against Freiberg, providing for Nayef Aguerd to score West Ham’s second. Ward-Prowse has shown he has more to offer than just set pieces; his goals against Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester City were both a demonstration of his attacking awareness. Southgate considers Jordan Henderson, now playing for Al Ettifaq, and Kalvin Phillips, not playing much for City, as better options right now. But if Ward-Prowse maintains the form he’s shown in a West Ham shirt, a recall, like Bowen’s, is surely not far away."
