The Reckoning- BBC

Post Mr Anon »

"All 4 parts available on Iplayer. A grim difficult watch, but have to say Coogan absolutely nailed it. Would absolutely be nailed on for a BAFTA it wasn't for the subject matter."

"They certainly were very sure to lay it on thick that only the old white men were blind to and enabling all his behaviour and basically complicit, while every single woman in the show, and also the gentleman of colour in the hospital were oh so quick to continually see through him warn everyone exactly what he was. Bit crass."

No his mum.was the only woman he had true respect for. Though it was a slightly one sided regard if that program is to be believed. He idolised her but they have made it out that she wasn't overly loving of him. Maybe he picked up.on.that if it's true and that informed his attitude towards women in general. We'll.never know but Coogan is just magnificent in this. Its not just the voice but the whole level.of absolute creepiness and arrogance of him is spot on.

"I wonder if Saville assaulted The Duchess in the mortuary, and that fuelled his particular taste for that type of despicable sexual assault."

Branded - that’s an interesting point and one that I’d not really considered. Perhaps looking like an absolute fucking weirdo creep meant that nobody wanted to consensually get close to him.

"What wasn't clear to me in the program was if Saville was genuinely sexually promiscuous with consenting adults apart from one moment. Anyway, I guess most people just thought he was a bit of an odd cսnt and wouldn't have been surprised if he was a massive wrongun but rarely had hard evidence if ever. He definitely groomed people right to the very top though."

"It's really good, but I feel like they've taken a bit of artistic licence and overegged the 'everyone blatantly hated him and had his number right from the off' a bit with the looks and remarks he gets off every single person as soon as his back was turned even before he was really a big deal at all. Also including his mum, which is probably a bit of a flight of fancy. There are probably too many people being openly disgusted with him every minute of the programme (although i do appreciate it's difficult for it to be dramatically conveyed otherwise) for that to ring true- at least for me. Coogan is fucking superb"

"Just finished watching this - very well made, Coogan is very convincing. The scenes with the journalist are excellent and very insightful into his psyche. Calling the journalist ‘wordsmith’ was both demeaning and almost endearing to Dan Davies at the same time. Not exactly an enjoyable watch of course but it is well worth watching."

"Going to start watching this tonight. Apparently this was in production a couple of years back and has taken some time to get aired on tv. I remember watching the Netflix documentary, surrounding himself with establishment, charity fund raiser and basically telling everyone what he was up to in interviews. ""You wouldn't trust me in a convent school"", little smile to camera while the interviewer laughs it off. I never liked Jim'll Fix It and TOTP when he presented it but being so young I couldn't understand why he seemed to freak me out."

"LeroysBoots 4:23 Fri Oct 13 They are the bits that really hammer it home. Steve Coogan really nails the sheer creepiness of Savile and the drama is really well done but it is the intercut real footage makes me really angry and sad. Savile's eulogy, Savile with the fucking Pope! Savile with Thatcher, Savile surrounded by smiling kids etc. Fenella Woolgar is superb as Margaret Thatcher too."

Have watched the first two and its obvious that plenty knew what he was up to but when the young girls and others complained they were told it was just 'Jimmy being Jimmy'. He was very clever in knowing that his charity work and the fact he was successful for the bbc made him bullet proof.

"Coogan is superb. And the series in general does a great job of exposing how the powerful can get away with it for years and why victims stay silent for decades if they think they are alone. A real shame the dirty old nonce never faced justice in his lifetime. The bbc were so enamoured with him they even kept the pretence going long after he'd snuffed it, knowing full well what he'd done."
