The Athletic Mohammed Kudus deserves more than Premier League cameos for West Ham By Roshane Thomas It is not Mohammed Kudus’ self-confidence that is most satisfying to West Ham fans but rather the sense of reassurance he offers to everyone else. There was almost an inevitability about the outcome of his shot which secured Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Newcastle United, a beautiful effort from outside the box which prompted his team-mate and fellow summer signing Edson Alvarez to drop to his knees and punch the ground in relief. Since joining from Ajax for £38.2million ($48m) in the summer, Kudus has registered two goals in eight appearances. The Ghana international has been limited to starts against TSC Backa Topola, Lincoln City and Freiburg but his lively cameos in the Premier League — Sunday’s was his latest star turn from the bench — have given David Moyes food for thought. “We’re really pleased with him,” said Moyes. “We’ve brought substitutes on in the past who haven’t been able to have much of an impact. But today Kudus was able to provide that for us. He gave us more composure. Newcastle started to fight back and we had more of the ball in the last 15 minutes. Kudus scored a really good goal and that’s what he’s here to do. He’ll improve because he’s a young player. We look forward to getting him into the team.” Kudus is versatile and capable of playing in the No 10 role, across both flanks and as a centre-forward. In Moyes’ 4-2-3-1 system, Lucas Paqueta plays on the left, Jarrod Bowen on the right with James Ward-Prowse and Tomas Soucek interchanging at No 10. Michail Antonio had a promising start to the season but, having failed to score in his last six games, Kudus could replace the Jamaica international with Bowen playing as the lead striker. The manager has openly spoken about wanting to transition Bowen, newly tied to an extended contract, into a forward. Such a change will further strengthen West Ham offensively with Kudus having longer to showcase why he was such a sought-after talent in the summer. Goalkeeper Joseph Anang has played an important role in helping Kudus settle into his new life in London. Similar to the attacker, Anang was born in Ghana and the pair often travel and leave the training ground together. Off the field, too, he has attracted a following. Ghanaian musician Stonebwoy cheered on the attacker against Newcastle United, while Southampton winger and his fellow Ghanaian Kamaldeen Sulemana was also in attendance at London Stadium. “It feels really good to score but most importantly it’s made a difference to us getting a point,” said Kudus. “I felt good and I just went for it. When I was on the bench and we were down 2-1 you could feel the energy from the fans. It uplifted us a lot but we’re not satisfied because we want to aim higher. There is still a lot to come but it feels like a family already.” Eddie Howe, the Newcastle United manager, switched to a back five after Kudus’ equaliser, partly to nullify his attacking threat. It was one of the biggest compliments that could be paid to both the player and his team, but Howe will not be alone in the Premier League managerial fraternity in puzzling over how to stop the 23-year-old. “He showed straight away when he came on that he has that quality,” said goalkeeper Alphonse Areola. “He’s got the skills, he performed good and he finished well. Personality wise he’s really calm and we try to make jokes with him. He’s a cool guy and on the pitch he’s totally different.” For Asamoah Gyan, the former Ghana international who played in the Premier League from 2010-12 with Sunderland, Kudus is already adapting his game. “I have seen some big changes in Kudus’ play,” said Gyan. “He is beginning to understand how to move into spaces to receive the ball and releasing the ball at the right time. If he continues like this consistently he will be a world-class player.” Kudus certainly has the quality to help West Ham, already a team on the up, to a new level this season. “We have that in our minds (to compete for a top six spot) when you compete in Europe for three years, and in the league — we aspire to finish as high as we can in the table,” Areola added. “We have the international break but we have to come back with the same focus and intensity.” West Ham will travel to Aston Villa after the international break. It would not be a surprise if Kudus was in the team when they do."
