Don't let him spend a ton though - you can get what you need for around 30 quid plus a 'gift' that lasts for about 12-18 month for a tenner.

"NS - yes got one of those. They work really well and you get the lot in SD. Very few HD channels though, but great if you have a poor/restricted internet connection. Only caveat I would add is they potentially have a limited lifespan as there is on-going suggestion of a change to the encryption used by the satellite companies potentially resulting in a loss of channels. This is what caused the HD channels to go (so the tech exists) and it's a case of the number of people with old boxes that can't use the new encryption and how much hardware Sky would need to replace."

My old man is looking at buying one of these boxes that card shares?? Box is about a ton and you pay a annual fee?? Stick it on your normal co axial leads for your satellite and somehow it streams a code or something that allows access to all pay channels... app' only down point is the Sky channels you can only get in SD?? Anyone got one of those??

"I've got 4 devices: - Firestick - Fire Box - Nvidia Shield - Rasperry Pi 2 Excluding the Shield which is probably more expensive than most would choose to go with, the Amazon Fire HD Box is probably the way to go, unless looking at one of these 'Android Kodi Boxes' that are out there...I've got Amazon Prime which is good in it's own right, plus the Amazon build quality is good, with a very good remote. The Firestick in my bedroom is actually ok, but does need excellent WiFi (I've a repeater off of a home-plug right next to it). I can generally watch sports or HD movies on it no problem though."

"Sorry to pop up and ask a couple of basic questions that have probably been asked several times on here already, although it would take me a long time to go through 2500 odd posts to find the info. After messing about with it on my laptop a bit, i want to get set up as easily (and cheaply) as possible. What's my best bet? Looks like firestick or a box of some sort (I'm fine setting the box up myself as i am sure it's simple and there are umpteen guides and videos out there) but which is best? Obviously the stick is cheaper but will I need to take pre-loaded things off it? Does the fact that it's only wifi give any performance issues as opposed to using a box attached to the hub by a cable? With a box, I'm guessing one with nothing pre-loaded is going to be better if I'm prepared to go through the process of setting it up. (If any one has any particular recommendations for a modestly priced box, that would also be gratefully received) Thanks! (Apologies for going over old ground with this- if the thread was siginifcantly shorter I'd probably attempt to read through it)"

"I'd say unless you want scheduled programming (and given that one of the things that is hard to replace over a Sky setup is the Programe Browser) then the combination of FreeView for live programming, Exodus for BoxSets/Catch-up TV, and Sportsnation HD for Sports...there isn't huge reason to go for UltimateMania. Each to their own of course, and it's small potatoes really the extra cost as far as I can see."

"What's the Misc folder....I've never noticed one of these on my box? What's it contain? The only thing I periodically do is clear the cache folder which is under 'Settings, Apps, Kodi' or you can updownload software / an add-on to do this for you e.g. Ares Wizard."

"Morning Chaps, I have an MXPro box and it has been working like a dream. However, after a couple of months I notice that the Misc folder starts filling up to the point where is becomes un-useable. The last time it happened I had to rebuild the box and now a few months on its happening again. I have googled and tried out a few suggestions to no avail so any help would be appreciated. Cheers."

"Thanks Jack F. Still waiting for my 2 boxes to arrive, but should be here over today so I'll take a look at the Droidsmart set-up over the weekend and let you know if I have any other questions. I'm very comfortable with the standard Kodi 16.1 etc, which although is pretty basic works for me, is easy to navigate and nothing goes missing etc. If I find Droidsmart restrictive, then I'll simply uninstall and download from scratch with the usual 2-3 add-on's plus Movie HD (not sure if you've got this, but good for films and sits outside of Kodi). As per your question below, I don't have SportsNation but installed it for my father in law last weekend and somehow messed up the password resulting in the Kodi one not being in sych with the one I used on a lap top log in. I eventually logged in to the laptop, changed the password there and then had to change the password on Kodi via the add on settings. It may not be the same thing, in which case I'd suggest emailing them and have them reset the password although I think you can request a password reset link from the website which may be easier. Cheers RJ"

IPTV is just TV delivered over the internet. Sportsnation (or UltimateMania which is their full TV package) is IPTV. Kodi is a platform being used to deliver IPTV.

"I've found Exodus to be really good some excellent 1080p versions of new films, I noticed also they've got an had 720 p version of Hell or high water so I'll watch that this weekend. Some newer ones like Girl on a train or the new reacher are pretty shit but that's expected as they're so new. Good version of the new Bridget Jones on there as well! Problem is there just isn't enough time to watch all the good stuff, it's just good to have it on tap!"

"No problem Roeders, you're way ahead of me in boxes set up (I've only set up 5 for myself family & friends) so I might be asking you a few questions The one thing I find mildly irritating with Droidsmart is that after you do one of their updates, all your headings & add-ons get changed, so you have to go back into shortcuts to change them back No doubt there's a way of backing up your settings but I tend to take a picture of each page on my moby before backing up so I don't have to remember where I put everything! The good thing about the Droidsmart Wizard though is it enables you to get back to their original settings if you manage to make a complete cock up (Which I managed to do when I reset ""Skin"" settings to default when I was setting up my sisters Kodi ~ I won't do that again in a hurry!) I tend to keep my pages & add-ons to a minimum though I have a peek at what new add-ons Droidsmart have added (before uninstalling them usually!)"

"Thanks Jack and some very helpful info around navigating the Driodsmart set-up. I've had a box just over a year and set-up about 20 for mates, so pretty comfortable with their workings and set-up although it did take me some time to get to grips at the time. The way you've discribed setting-up the short-cut's etc and ensuring you hit the log-out button to save settings sounds very similar to the standard Kodi lay-out I'm used to. I've got 2 on order for my mates, so will have a play around and then probably get one for myself as I need a 2nd box as too lazy to unplug and take upstairs. Will let you know if I get suck or have any other questions. Appreciate your help. RJ"
