Marianna Spring, who works as the broadcaster's disinformation correspondent, reportedly gave misleading information to secure work. She claimed she worked alongside BBC correspondent Sarah Rainsford covering the "perception" of Russia during the 2018 World Cup, The New European reports. Marianna allegedly wrote on her CV: "June 2018: Reported on International News during the World Cup, specifically the perception of Russia, with BBC correspondent Sarah Rainsford." The journalist made the apparent claim five years ago while trying to get work as a freelancer in Moscow for US-based news site Coda Story. According to the publication, the website's editor-in-chief Natalia Antelava, who previously worked for the BBC, criticised Marianna after checking out the supposed connection. Marianna then reportedly sent an email apologising for her "awful misjudgment" and said she was led by her "desperation" for the job. She also said she was a "brilliant journalist" but admitted she was "naive and stupid", it is reported. But Natalia responded: "Telling me you are a brilliant reporter who exercises integrity and honesty when you have literally demonstrated the opposite was a terrible idea." Marianna became the BBC's disinformation and social media correspondent in August last year. She had worked for Panorama and has her own BBC podcast called Marianna In Conspiracyland. The journalist is also part of the BBC verify team, which undertakes fact-checking to avoid misinformation. The BBC did not wish to comment when approached by The Sun Online.

She was employed for the specific role of fact-checking, to ensure that whatever was fed to the general public was the truth. The fundamental fact that she was quite prepared to ignore that precept simply to get the job in the first place renders her unsuitable for such a position, no matter how "brilliant" she is/was as a journalist (look it up). She clearly has a price at which she can be bought to stay "on-message" - any message. He who pays the piper, and all that.

In terms of the lie she told how do we judge it in football terms. For example how does it rate against, stealing ten yards for a throw in, feigning injury to run the clock down or trying to fool the ref you were fouled in the penalty box?

Over-egging the pudding on a CV isn't the crime of the century - particularly in journalism, which is something of a cess-pit. This woman shouldn't be cancelled, banned, put on a list or anything of the sort. However, lying on a CV when applying for a job as 'fact-checker' for the BBC, a position that could be literally defined as 'ultimate authorititive arbiter of truth', is unacceptable and renders her unsuitable for the job. The BBC are entitled to sack her and should.

Misinformation, according to the msm, is not necessarily information that is untrue (although some is), they are far more worried about controlling the spread of information which is true, but goes against their narratives. Obviously any company SHOULD act when someone has pumped up their cv to make themselves look more important or experienced. But think a journalist over egging what they contributed to a story is a bit different to someone falsifying their brain surgery qualifications. If her role is fact checking claims made I think you'd judge the work done and whether that was fair and reasonable. Do other networks have this where they interrogate claims made by politicians etc? Or something like News Watch where they give viewers air time to question their output and they put those questions to the news editors etc? BBC could do with a clear out and better focus. Could start by binning the licence fee and funding it properly out of taxes.
