Beeb ‘Liar’ BBC’s chief fact-checker accused of lying
One for them likes of Capital Man, Pickle and joyo - you love to be told what to think by your government controlled media outlets. What do you make of this then? Unbelievable hypocrisy for that fact checker or , it’s ok to lie if you are on the side of truth. I can already guess what you will choose. BEEB ‘LIAR’ BBC’s chief fact-checker Marianna Spring accused of lying on CV by falsely claiming to have worked with Beeb colleague Holly Christodoulou Published: 9:57, 8 Sep 2023 THE BBC's chief fact-checker is at the centre of claims she lied about her experience on her CV. Marianna Spring, who works as the broadcaster's disinformation correspondent, reportedly gave misleading information to secure work. She claimed she worked alongside BBC correspondent Sarah Rainsford covering the "perception" of Russia during the 2018 World Cup, The New European reports. Marianna allegedly wrote on her CV: "June 2018: Reported on International News during the World Cup, specifically the perception of Russia, with BBC correspondent Sarah Rainsford." The journalist made the apparent claim five years ago while trying to get work as a freelancer in Moscow for US-based news site Coda Story. According to the publication, the website's editor-in-chief Natalia Antelava, who previously worked for the BBC, criticised Marianna after checking out the supposed connection. Marianna then reportedly sent an email apologising for her "awful misjudgment" and said she was led by her "desperation" for the job. She also said she was a "brilliant journalist" but admitted she was "naive and stupid", it is reported. But Natalia responded: "Telling me you are a brilliant reporter who exercises integrity and honesty when you have literally demonstrated the opposite was a terrible idea." Marianna became the BBC's disinformation and social media correspondent in August last year. She had worked for Panorama and has her own BBC podcast called Marianna In Conspiracyland. The journalist is also part of the BBC verify team, which undertakes fact-checking to avoid misinformation. The BBC did not wish to comment when approached by The Sun Online.

Just think out of the box for a change: since she got the job at the Beeb on the basis of her telling porkies, she could even become PM if she goes full-on Tory.

Did Boris Johnson ever work FOR the BBC? (Stints on HIGNFY don't count). What relevance, then, is bringing him into a debate on whether or not the BBC (not anybody else - start a thread on them) can be trusted. Sounds all a bit "I'm losing so I'll try a diversionary tactic" to me.

riosleftsock 7:44 Mon Sep 11 Re: Beeb ‘Liar’ BBC’s chief fact-checker accused of lying BBC should look into it and fire her if necessary. I have no clue who the fuck she is anyway. What is isn't is some big takedown of the BBC, mostly from news orgs who have and actively lie on a far more fundamental basis. Take Murdochs Sun, and sister company Fox News, who literally paid out almost $1bn for knowingly lying about the US election. Not mistakenly, but deliberately and knowingly. And what gets held up against the beeb, someone once made something up on a CV for another job.

Lee Trundle 7:51 Mon Sep 11 Re: Beeb ‘Liar’ BBC’s chief fact-checker accused of lying Come on, let's face it, you've never put forward a single coherent argument on here, barely full sentences in most instances. You generally seem to run around stalking people shouting BWACE and generally trying to prove that someone, anyone, is more inept than you. The bumbling trundle method is hardly a recipe for success is it. You can't possibly expect anyone to believe your entire life is more than a steaming pile of lies and bullshit can you?

Don’t reckon Boris Johnson ever got work on the basis of his CV. Doubt he even knows how to draft one.

Re: Beeb ‘Liar’ BBC’s chief fact-checker accused of lying
Obviously it shouldn't be encouraged, but you'd need a set of balls on you to lie or even exaggerate on your CV. What if you get called on your fibs in your job interview? You've no way of knowing that the person(s) interviewing you isn't fluent in Greek or is not a 5th dan taekwondo champion or expert in Yixing teapots? I'd be flipping mortified to be caught out like that.

Capitol Man 7:41 Mon Sep 11 I guess you've had little trouble in getting a job, being a box tickers dream? Thankfully even though I'm a white, straight male, I've had my intelligence to help me out in the 4 job interviews I've ever had, seeing as I got the job on each occasion.

Why on earth would you trust someone who has LIED to get a "fact checkers" job? He/she/they clearly have a price at which they can be bought. In this case it's the role's prestige & salary.

Having "lily guiding" in your cv, is ok as long as it goes in the "hobbies and interests" section.

Lee Trundle 7:04 Mon Sep 11 Re: Beeb ‘Liar’ BBC’s chief fact-checker accused of lying Let's face it, it's astonishing that anyone has ever employed you at all, though I suppose it's a care in the community scheme. But reality check here, if you went through all this woman's work, apparently podcasts as well, and all you could fine is that she guided the lily in a resume to a previous employer five years ago then that's not much is it. Sure many of you have lied through your teeth to get jobs as most of you are gibbering fucking idiots.

Do you not have to fact check to decide whether it's information or disinformation then? I'm sure the world would love an expert's expose on how that is done in the real world.

Re: Beeb ‘Liar’ BBC’s chief fact-checker accused of lying
I’m beginning to entertain the notion that some have genuinely lost the ability to tell the difference between fact checking and the analysis and exposure of disinformation. But one thing is for sure - she hasn’t been attacked for being a fact-checker.

I'd be astonished if comma isn't, or has never been, employed by the BBC.

So a "correspondent" employed to ferret out disinformation was engaged on the basis of the disinformation she supplied. No wriggle room here.

Re: Beeb ‘Liar’ BBC’s chief fact-checker accused of lying
No point reading the comments of those who still refer to Mariana as a "fact checker" even when it has been pointed out that she is retained as a correspondent covering disinformation and the social media. In fact, the attempt at treating the analysis and reporting of disinformation as "fact-checking" disqualifies the comment for serious treatment.

Re: Beeb ‘Liar’ BBC’s chief fact-checker accused of lying
I understood 'fact checking' was investigating mainly government claims to see if they are actually true and the full story. For example the government might say 'We have added an extra 20,000 police officers in the last 5 years' Fact checker might come back and say that is true but in the previous 5 years 30,000 were shed.

, 5:50 Mon Sep 11 So an organisation that you cannot prove is telling the truth/is being honest (the BBC) confirms or denies what is said by another organisation that you cannot prove is telling the truth/is being honest. How does that work?

Re: Beeb ‘Liar’ BBC’s chief fact-checker accused of lying
Fact checking should really be called confirmation bias checking and rarely offers the possibility of nuance or perspective. It will merely encourage the “other side” to create their own fact checking services.
Re: Beeb ‘Liar’ BBC’s chief fact-checker accused of lying
MO, one would need a feeler gauge to measure the difference between you and someone who just posts an opinion for the sake of it. The fact check that the BBC puts out is really a way of clarifying something that has already been put out on the media. More often than not the things put out are seen by the BBC fact check and they simply clear up possible confusion. Over time, because of fact checks, organisations are becoming more aware of how important their getting things clearer and accurate pay off.
