General Election - July 2024
This appears to be the rumour on Sky. An easy win for Starmer and some big names losing their seats. The Country needs a change but is it going to get one? The thought of seeing that annoying Beth Rigby for 6 weeks though is a horrifying thought.

Re: General Election - July 2024
"What I said is that whenever a Labour government is threatened we hear that bankers & financiers will up sticks & move to Frankfurt And that that turns out to be overwhelmingly hot air because they & particularly their families would think living in a moribund provincial German city rather than in the greatest city in the world would lack any sort of appeal Goose went on to tell us that as a provincial Italian he thinks Lecce is a greater city Mainly because he doesn’t like Ethiopian restaurants & thinks the museum, gallery, restaurant & sporting (football & bocce presumably) provision is superior to London’s offering of a dozen football teams , two Test cricket venues including Lords & the home of rugby union in Twickenham."

"Goose Never saw what the argument started over tbh and don't have much of an opinion on that, you both make good points. I agree Florence is great, but we don't gain anything by shitting on our country. We've just voted in a government full of people who do that professionally. If more of us love our country as much as they hate it, they won't win"

"Goose, have also been there numerous times. Plenty of foreign beggars in Florence but Pisa was the worst, never been hassled as a tourist more than Pisa, Rome a close second. London isn't without its problems and I could whine about them all day, but there's still lots of good there and its not unfixable. The fact that middle class people splash £600K+ for houses that would be under half that anywhere else says a lot. Its also bloody huge. Its not all Katherine Road any more than its all Primrose Hill."

Yep that's part of it COYI. For its size its quick and easy to get about. Much less ag than smaller cities and especially other huge capitals.

"""Plus the transport is brilliant, trust me, try getting around any other city in Britain and you'll miss the tube."" Hardly a true comparison as London is much larger than any other British city, being effectively a city-state and global mega city."

"London is fantastic still. The crime has become an embarrassment but there's so much good. Museums and history everywhere. Pubs with great atmosphere all over. Parks and views when the weather is nice. Plus the transport is brilliant, trust me, try getting around any other city in Britain and you'll miss the tube. Don't hate your country. Love it. Hating it is what your enemies want you to do. Florence's tourist areas are full of African and gypsy beggars and living there, so I'm told, is prohibitively expensive even more than London. I bloody love Italy but just being honest. Bangkok is great to visit but living there as a local (not a farang in a condo) London would seem quaint and serene. Also Ethiopian food is surprisingly really good?üëå"

"Apart from reasons already listed, and more no doubt, I don't think you can compare a city in SE Asia to London, as poor infrastructure (although improving) heavy traffic and intense heat are three pretty big downsides. Never been to Tokyo, maybe that is a better comparison for Asia? Went to NY and loved it there. Would never rank Berlin as a great city personally, didn't rate it at all. I really like Prague, but can't compare that to London of course."

Re: General Election - July 2024
"Fauxstralian 2:28 Sat Jul 6 It's not me claiming London to be the greatest city, with or without my personal interests. I worked in London for almost 25 years (probably a day too few to have acquired a ""feel"" for it though), and before that, as a kid used to cycle to/through it regularly from Chadwell Heath in the mid-60s. I could probably done ""The Knowledge"" by the time I was 13 - had I known then what ""The Knowledge"" was. London still doesn't rate highly enough for me to be labelled ""great""; perhaps I know it too well."

"Does Pakistan have a royal family? Otherwise you’ve listed some stuff that can be found anywhere. Restaurants? Wow massively over priced for a host of awful food Theatre? Wow it’ll cost you double most other cities. A park? Blimey you can’t find those anywhere. Not sure what Bangkok has to do with anything, unless you’re pretending to be from their now as well."

"Still pretending to be Australian Sven? Or is it Scottish this week? I prefer my cities without shit in the water, one’s that don’t resemble Islamabad when you walk through them, cities where you don’t feel like you can’t wear you watch just in case, cities without Ethiopian restaurants and cities that you don’t pay a fortune just to be there. Top of my head: Florence Vienna Lecce Zurich Copenhagen Enjoy your shitty London water. It’s not even the best city in this country."

"From personal experience, Berlin, Bangkok, New York, Jakarta or Kuala Lumpur offer excellent challenges to London on being the ""greatest"" city, but this ""greatness"" seems to be assumed to be accepted by all but declared by a bunch of window-licking gobby ignoramuses. Define ""Great"" and we might start to get somewhere."

Re: General Election - July 2024
"David Lammy's introductory video was something. ""I am the descendent of slaves"" If a white working class MP got up and said ""I am the descendent of peasants"" they'd get laughed at and have serious questions asked about their mental health. Slavery in Guyana was abolished in 1834 (Britain took it over in 1831) so how is his family tree going back that far any more relevant than anyone who can trace their family back to pre-industrial Britain? This isn't a racial thing. If someone is gonna be negotiating trade deals and potentially Ukraine stuff wouldn't you want to know about their CV rather than their family history from nearly 200 years ago?"
