Andy Murray Retires
".. Worth a small thread as many would have him in their ten greatest British sportsmen Won Wimbledon twice, and the US Open - in the era of the greatest ever players Also won more Olympic gold medals than Ovett and Cram put together .. I'll go with - 1. Bobby Moore 2. Bobby Charlton 3. Joe Calzaghe 4. Lester Piggott 5. Chris Hoy 6. Mark Cavendish 7. Andy Murray 8. AP McCoy 9. Lennox Lewis 10. George Best ."
Re: Andy Murray Retires
"Pretty good list to be fair but I think like him or loathe him surely Seb Coe has a shout of forcing his way in. Four Olympic medals, including 1500 metres gold medals at the Olympic Games in 1980 and 1984. Nine outdoor and three indoor world records in middle-distance track events – including, in 1979, setting three world records in the space of 41 days – and the world record he set in the 800 metres in 1981 remained unbroken until 1997. Held all four middle-distance world records—the 800m, 1000m, 1500m, and mile—simultaneously (another unique feat) for one hour until Ovett broke his mile record."

"One of our greatest ever sportsman, playing in same era as Federer, Djokovic and Nadal but still managed to win a few grand slams and 2 Olympic golds. Reckon he will make a good coach."
Re: Andy Murray Retires
"Sorry Rossal, are you now saying he's just one of Britain's best ever footballers? No arguments there and he won plenty as one of the galacticos but that's not what this thread is about. Woosnam was quantifiably the best player in the world for a whole year."

Re: Andy Murray Retires
I dont think champs league medals is any form of metric.....but they certainly add weight to the argument that he is one of Britains best ever footballers. Why would you put Ian Woosnam ahead of him?

Re: Andy Murray Retires
"actually, for the record, he has more than Warne - at a better strike rate - in actual Test matches. 6 of Warne's were in a meaningless exhibition game that somehow blagged its way to test status."
Re: Andy Murray Retires
"Rossal 11:46 Fri Aug 2 Hello pot, have you met kettle? I didn't put words in your mouth. You said his 5 Champions League winners medals qualified him as one of Britain's Greatest Ever Sportsmen. I simply pointed out that if you were using that as an appropriate metric, that would make him better than Messi who has 4 I didn't, however, say that I thought he was shit... although I'd have him behind Calzaghi, Gareth Edwards, Ian Woosnam and probably Geraint Evans in the list of the top Welsh Sportsmen"

Re: Andy Murray Retires
Have always liked him Has a very dry sense of humour that goes over the heads of many Lost 5 Australian Opens but always gracious and sporting Alongside his 2 Wimbledons & US Open he has 2 Olympic golds and single handedly won the Davis Cup. First win in that competition for GB since 1936 Jimmy Anderson .... remarkable longevity in the sport Long enough in the game to lose a record 20 Ashes Test matches Averages 24.4 with the ball in Tests in England Imagine if Glenn McGrath or Terry Alderman could have played half their Tests on English pitches taking wickets at 19

"onsideman 11:01 Fri Aug 2 Lol talk about putting words in my mouth fuck me. What's Messi got to do with it? haha He was unbelieveable at Spurs, went to real madrid won 4 league titles and 5 champs league 3 club world cups and a few super cups One of the greatest ever goals in a champs league final and was carrying Wales at one point aswell So yeah, great player in my book......fair enough if you think he was shit"
Re: Andy Murray Retires
"Rossal 10:47 Fri Aug 2 Re: Andy Murray Retires 5 times champions league winner Gareth Bale you mean? Lol! Look at you including the season when he played 7 minutes in the entire competition including being an unused sub in the final... If CL titles is your metric, he's a better player than Messi."

"Jimmy ANDERSON has put up numbers that are ahead of what anyone else in his field has ever accomplished, and will almost certainly never be surpassed. He is very obviously among our top 3 greatest sports people by any objective measure Andy MURRAY won the same number of grand slams as Stan WAWRINKA."
