I'm always surprised to see Harrison Ford never gets a mention. I could probably list of 10 movies off the top of my head I'd happily watch right now. Star Wars x 3 Indiana Jones (not the recent ones) Blade Runner x 2 Apocalypse Now Patriot Games Clear and Present Danger The Fugitive

"Some good observations here, you could be here all day. Daniel Day Lewis and Jeremy Irons are two others that are highly revered. Loved Jeremy Irons in Margin Call."

"Brando during his pomp was an incredible actor, far better than Pacino and De Niro. James Dean was also brilliant and taken away far too young, as was Montgomery Clift, All method actors, interestingly. But the very best actors are the character actors. Mark Rylance, Alec Guinness, John Mills, Forest Whittaker, Karl Malden, Henry Fonda, Anthony Hopkins, all far superior in their craft than the two choices we've been given."

I posted earlier and gave De Niro the edge but did not give an answer to who has a better body of work than those two. The competition is hot and several names come to mind but the differences between them all are minimal imho. Having said that for me there is one who stands out at being best of all and that is Meryl Streep.

"mallard 10:31 Wed Aug 14 As was Christopher Walken in those scenes. Was also sadly John Cazale's last role before he died at the young age of 42. He was a superb actor. Apparently he was very ill and his scenes were shot first. Off Wiki - ""He completed his scenes, but died before the film was released. Cazale was considered all but uninsurable due to his illness, jeopardizing his participation in the film, but according to Streep the costs were paid by De Niro, who wanted Cazale to be in it."" Meryl Streep was his partner at the time."

"As Russ has pointed out De Niro’s portrayal of Max Candy in Cape Fear was outstanding. It was one of those very rare remakes that knocks the original into a cocked hat. Robert Mitchum, in the original, got nowhere near the level of menace that De Niro came up with in the remake. They are both good actors but for me De Niro is the more versatile."

"Too difficult to decide for me. I was going to say Pacino because of Dog Day Afternoon but then I remembered Raging Bull. Just to blur the lines further, I could sit and stare at anything by Gene Hackman all day. The conversation was a masterpiece."

"Not this old chestnut! As soon as I saw the thread title, I knew it would be a Pacino vs. De Niro thread. Been done 100 times before on here, like most topics. Boring. They are both formerly superb actors who's careers have fallen off a cliff since the turn of the millennium (though Pacino did win an Emmy Award for 'Angels in America' in 2003). The Irishman was a real nadir for both of them and showed how much they (and Scorcese) had fallen. Awful, overly long, boring film which contained a ridiculous scene of a geriatric De Niro laying down a beating when pretending to be in his 30s (he could barely raise his leg) and Pacino doing his usual late-career over (ham)acting."

"Hard one. I personally think Pacino is the better actor overall. Look at the roles - Corleone, Montana, Ruggerio, Hanna, Wortzik, the devil.... Great roles played perfectly. But I do think De Niro has been in the better films generally. De Niro has shown good range though, from nutter, to gangster, to comedy roles. Personally I think De Niro's best performance is in Cape Fear. Breath taking."
