At the time I remember thinking NATO would have to bolster Poland and the Baltics while Ukraine’s aspirations to join would have to be met more quickly if we were to avoid war. I also thought the Kremlin’s propaganda machine would mobilise its resources in the West to hamper the political processes in response to the new threat. And of course I was not wrong, and now, tragically, we have this war. To a great extent, many in Germany, UK and US believed Putin could be accommodated and eventually civilised and the path of resolute confrontation with the imperialistically bent dictator was never a popular one. So here we are today, but hopefully lessons have been learnt and minds in the Senate will be more focused."
