The Athletic West Ham Transfer DealSheet: Lopetegui targeting Brazilians in his first summer at club By Roshane Thomas It is a fresh start for West Ham United following David Moyes‚Äô departure as manager ‚Äî there will be great interest in how Julen Lopetegui fares in his first summer as head coach. Lopetegui‚Äôs arrival is the first time in West Ham‚Äôs 129-year history that they have appointed someone without the title of manager for the men‚Äôs team. Pursuing transfer targets will be harder for West Ham without European football. But internally there is great confidence in what Lopetegui and technical director Tim Steidten can achieve. Will West Ham sign a new striker? Is Lopetegui going to name a new captain? Can the club keep hold of Mohammed Kudus? Who do they plan on signing? The Athletic answers some of the important topics surrounding West Ham‚Äôs transfer plans. What positions are they looking at this summer? The club are prioritising a centre-back, a right-back and a forward. Defender Nayef Aguerd is expected to leave this summer, while captain Kurt Zouma faces an uncertain future. Lopetegui needs a new right-back to provide competition for Vladimir Coufal, with Ben Johnson set to leave when his contract expires. Johnson is attracting interest from Rangers, Leeds United and Crystal Palace. West Ham‚Äôs efforts to sign an effective forward has proved largely futile in previous windows, but the club hopes that will change this window. Jarrod Bowen, Danny Ings and Michail Antonio are the current forward options. Which players are they looking at? Lopetegui wants to make four signings before his official start date on July 1. Nothing is finalised but there‚Äôs a potential five-year deal for Flamengo centre-back Fabricio Bruno which would see the 28-year-old move to the London Stadium for an initial ‚Ǩ13.5million plus ‚Ǩ1.5m in add-ons. But there are fears a deal could collapse due to late interest from an unnamed Saudi Pro League side, who are prepared to offer Bruno a higher salary. He is not the only Brazilian West Ham are in discussions with. They are in advanced talks to sign Palmeiras forward Luis Guilherme for a fee in the region of ¬£25.5m. The 18-year-old has a year left on his contract, has scored one goal and provided one assist in 45 appearances for the Brazilian side. West Ham are interested in signing Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Max Kilman. Lopetegui worked with the defender while manager of Wolves. Last season West Ham conceded 74 Premier League goals, the fourth-highest behind Sheffield United (104), Luton Town (85) and Burnley (78). Other defensive targets include Odilon Kossounou of Bayer Leverkusen, and Maxime Esteve of Burnley. Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo rejected a move to West Ham. The 26-year-old centre-back, who is set to join Chelsea on a free transfer, turned down a move to the London Stadium because they were unable to offer European football. West Ham are close to agreeing a deal with goalkeeper Wes Foderingham. The 33-year-old will leave Sheffield United when his contract officially expires at the end of June. New West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui wants to sign an experienced third-choice goalkeeper following the release of Joseph Anang, 23. West Ham missed out on signing Linfield forward Aodhan Doherty. The 18-year-old was initially on trial at West Ham, but Doherty has decided to join Championship side Blackburn Rovers instead. Vitoria Guimaraes forward Jota Silva is another target. Talks have not reached an advanced stage but the 24-year-old is keen on the move. Last season Silva scored 15 goals and registered seven assists. This calendar year he also made his debut for Portugal and has earned two caps. Corinthians forward Wesley has been targeted to boost West Ham‚Äôs forward options, but the asking price of ¬£30million is proving prohibitive. Who will make the key decisions this summer? Steidten and Lopetegui will be working together to identify transfer targets. Steidten has travelled to Brazil multiple times to scout promising prospects, while Lopetegui has identified experienced targets like Kilman and Sevilla forward Youssef En-Nesyri. West Ham are keen to not let a promising talent from Brazil slip away, having turned down the chance to sign Marcos Leonardo on loan from Santos in January. The 21-year-old has since joined Benfica and adapted seamlessly with seven league goals in 13 appearances. West Ham have implemented a new strategy with a technical director and a head coach and there is a desire to get signings done early this summer. ‚ÄúI‚Äôm very close with Tim and we are working towards achieving our aims,‚Äù said Lopetegui. ‚ÄúWe want to have the best squad possible to be able to have better players to achieve our aims. We will try to put our stamp on the club. I feel that we have a fantastic platform.‚Äù Who will they be looking to sell? Aguerd, who joined from Rennes in June 2022, received offers to leave last summer ‚Äî from a club in the Saudi Pro League and two unnamed European suitors ‚Äî but informed his representatives he was happy at West Ham. However, a dip in form saw him lose his starting place to Konstantinos Mavropanos and Aguerd would like to leave in the summer. Zouma could attract interest elsewhere as he enters the final year of his deal. The 29-year-old centre-back struggled with consistency last season. Southampton want to prioritise making Flynn Downes‚Äò loan permanent. The 25-year-old midfielder played a big role in the club securing promotion to the Premier League. Downes struggled to force his way into the team under former manager David Moyes. But Lopetegui plans on giving Downes an opportunity to impress in pre-season. West Ham will listen to offers for Maxwel Cornet. In January, he was a transfer target for Crystal Palace, but a deal could not be agreed. Said Benrahma is also expected to leave this summer. The Algeria international joined French side Lyon on loan in January, but a permanent deal may be thwarted because they have a transfer ban that is yet to be lifted. Last season only three of Ings‚Äô 20 league appearances were starts. The 31-year-old had a paltry return of one goal across 30 appearances. The forward has been linked with a move to Southampton, but they are yet to make a direct approach. Michail Antonio is attracting interest from clubs in the MLS and Saudi Pro League, but Lopetegui wants the 34-year-old forward to stay. Antonio‚Äôs deal expires at the end of the 2024-25 season. Which players‚Äô contracts are expiring? Who is expected to renew? Johnson, Angelo Ogbonna, Divin Mubama, Keenan-Appiah Forson and Joseph Anang will leave when their contracts expire at the end of June. Johnson and Mubama rejected multiple contract offers as they seek regular game time elsewhere. Ahead of the new season, Zouma, Coufal, Antonio, Ings, Lukasz Fabianski and Aaron Cresswell will be entering the final year of their deals. What do they have to do before June 30? With a number of outgoings expected, West Ham need to get most of their transfers done early. Although Lopetegui hopes to sign as many as four players before July 1, two or three is more realistic. In Lopetegui‚Äôs first in-house interview, he repeatedly stressed the importance of preparing pre-season, wanting to build the relationship between the players and his style of play. Similar to last summer, it would be an advantage to West Ham as the additions of Edson Alvarez, Mohammed Kudus, James Ward-Prowse and Konstantinos Mavropanos helped the club make a solid start to the season. The eventful summer of 2022 saw the arrivals of Gianluca Scamacca, Aguerd, Downes, Alphonse Areola, Cornet, Emerson Palmieri, Thilo Kehrer and Lucas Paqueta, many of whom arrived late in the window. Most were not involved in West Ham‚Äôs pre-season and the club duly endured a bad start to the season, losing five of their first seven league games. Sport Witness Suggestion West Ham have ‚Äòreached an agreement‚Äô to sign Atl?©tico Madrid player ‚Äì ‚Ç¨30m deal claimed By Naveen Ullal Atl?©tico Madrid‚Äôs Samu Omorodion could be on his way to West Ham United, according to a report from Spain. Journalist Antonio Ruiz told El Partidazo de COPE that Atl?©tico have ‚Äòreached an agreement‚Äô with a Premier League side for the forward. The deal is around ‚Ǩ30m, but Ruiz didn‚Äôt provide the details of the English club. El Desmarque relay this and then provide their own update on this case, which is when they mention West Ham. The 20-year-old, 6ft 4"" forward joined the La Liga side from Granada last summer and Los Rojiblancos sent him out on loan to Deportivo Alav?©s in the same window. He managed eight goals and an assist in 35 games for Alav?©s in the recently concluded season. Omorodion has returned to Atl?©tico after saying goodbye to Alav?©s, and he‚Äôs set to make a switch to the Premier League. El Desmarque say Atl?©tico ‚Äòcan sell‚Äô the Spain U21 international to Julen Lopetegui‚Äôs side in the summer window. This is mentioned after relaying Cope‚Äôs claim, while their title says West Ham are ‚Äòthe possible destination‚Äô for the attacker. If West Ham are the club to have agreed a deal with Atl?©tico for Omorodion, there should certainly be more claims in Spain and England in the next few hours. The Hammers appear to be making offers for players around Europe and beyond, with something of a frantic start to their summer efforts. West Ham United ‚Äòmost serious buyer‚Äô ‚Äì Hammers official could travel ‚Äòthis week‚Äô for signing By Naveen Ullal Over the past few weeks, the Turkish press have talked about West Ham United‚Äôs desire to sign Galatasaray‚Äôs Wilfried Zaha in the summer window. The Hammers continue to be named as a contender and Fotoma?ß now provides the latest on this case. Zaha left Crystal Palace as a free agent and joined the Turkish club on a free transfer last summer. Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk mainly used him as a substitute this year. This hasn‚Äôt pleased Zaha, who has set his sights on returning to England, where West Ham are the ‚Äòmost serious buyer‚Äô. West Ham are said to have conveyed to Galatasaray their desire to buy the Ivory Coast international, and done so via the player‚Äôs agent. Zaha‚Äôs deal lasts until 2026, and his club are willing to let him go, partly to save on wages. Fotospor also state Galatasaray are open to parting ways with Zaha, and they have set a ‚Ǩ10m asking price. Zaha‚Äôs agent, who is ‚Äòmediating‚Äô discussions between West Ham and Galatasaray, asked the latter whether they are open to negotiating the price. If they are willing, the report says West Ham will send an official to Istanbul to hold talks with Zaha‚Äôs employer ‚Äòthis week‚Äô. Sport Witness Player ‚Äòready to leave‚Äô West Ham United ‚Äì Director set to pounce as his signing ‚Äòguarantees quality‚Äô By Naveen Ullal Emerson Palmieri could be ‚Äòon his way out‚Äô of West Ham United in the summer window, according to Leggo, relayed by ASRomaLive.it. The left-back has been a regular for the Hammers since joining them in 2022, and he finished the recently concluded season with 47 appearances. His deal lasts until 2026, with an option for another year, and the report says the 29-year-old is ‚Äòready to leave‚Äô West Ham in the summer window. The Brazil-born Italy international arrived in England when Chelsea signed him from AS Roma in 2018, and he hasn‚Äôt ruled out a return to the Serie A side. On Monday, new Roma sporting director Florent Ghisolfi arrived in Italy, and he‚Äôll now start to work on the club‚Äôs transfers. Roma are likely to make Angeli?±o‚Äôs loan stay permanent, looking for a new left-back to please Daniele De Rossi, more so because Leonardo Spinazzola‚Äôs deal will expire in June. Emerson is ready to leave West Ham, and Ghisolfi could pounce on this opportunity to bring him back to the club. Roma are of the belief he can replace Spinazzola, and he also ‚Äòguarantees quality‚Äô to De Rossi. Leggo make no mention of the Premier League side‚Äôs stance on letting their player leave. Sports View West Ham United in for Girona midfielder Aleix Garcia West Ham United are keen on Girona midfielder Aleix Garcia and have tabled an official bid for the Spaniard, according to Radio Girona journalist Nil Sola. The Hammers have submitted a bid of ‚Ǩ16 million for the 26-year-old, which is higher than what Bayer Leverkusen have offered the La Liga club. While West Ham will not be playing in Europe next term after finishing the 2023-24 Premier League campaign in 9th place, Garcia will be open to the move given the strong appeal of the English top-flight to him. New Hammers manager Julen Lopetegui will be backed in the summer transfer window after replacing David Moyes, and strengthening the midfield is top of his plans. West Ham already have Edson Alvarez within their ranks, and while the Mexico international had a decent campaign, losing Declan Rice last summer is a huge blow the London club has not completely recovered from and landing Garcia will be a much-needed boost. Moyes eventually admitted that the Hammers were missing the influence of their former captain in the middle of the park, and Lopetegui has identified a problem that needs solving ahead of next season. Signing Garcia will be great for West Ham, and his partnership with Alvarez could make their midfield the most aggressive in England going forward. The former Manchester City midfielder was one of the major reasons Girona finished third in the La Liga last season after finishing 10th in 2022-23, weighing in with three goals and six assists in 37 league games while providing regular protection for the defence. Garcia has been rewarded with a place in the 28-player provisional squad Spain have named for the European Championship later this month and is expected to make the final cut following his brilliant season. West Ham will be doing themselves the world of good by completing a move for the La Liga star, and having him and Alvarez could finally help them stop missing Rice."
