West Ham United is delighted to confirm the signing of England midfielder Kalvin Phillips on loan until the end of the 2023/24 season. The 28-year-old joins the Hammers from Manchester City and could make his debut in Thursday’s Premier League fixture with AFC Bournemouth at London Stadium.

He will come good . It's clearly obvious he's off the pace ATM .but so was pacqueta when he 1st signed . Should have been brought in at the start of the window . The Bristol city games would have brought him up to speed .

"ED, As you know full well, Cornet had been at the club for more than a year before I cast doubt on him. Sure, he hasn't played a huge number of games in that time - and not only because of injuries. But, let's face it, the people at West Ham who really make the assessments of whether or not somebody is up to it - the manager, coaching staff, analysts etc - had many months to assess Cornet (especially in training) before many fans were scratching their heads (and I get that he might come good). They've barely had two weeks to assess Phillips in person. I think even you would agree there is a difference?"

As said with (not a lot of) hindsight we could have recalled Downes and saved a lot of money Obviously Moyes has decided he is going to bin Downes which fits in with his ANTI RED BULL moves to refuse to ever encourage young players or develop slightly older ones.

"Too early to write him off. When a player has a long layoff thru injury it takes weeks sometimes to get back to the levels required and the shapness of thinking, reactions and strength. Moyes and / or coaches or fitness team need to put him on a personalised programme to get him in shape. His thinking, movement and physicality are well short of what he has shown in the past but that was 2 seasons ago almost. Play him in the U21s for eftra game time as he’s not half a yard off the pace but more like 1 or 2 yards. He will come good with games but with us? Not sure if he suits Moyesball? But take Ross Barkley , we all thought he was finished at the top level but a long run of games and a deeper role and he looks very goid at Luton once more. Moyes might want to consider switching plans for Alvarez and Phillips and put Phillips in the deeper role with the ball and play in front of him to make interceptions and allow him to read the game more easily. His issue is being caught in possession with his back to the opposition. Alvarez looks more tham capable of running with the ball and distributing it. He made the best pass of the game over the top to Bowen who fvcked up by delaying his shot and wanting too much time ( imo ) Moyes will repeat the same mistakes as he sticks with a losing formula believing he is always right and Phillips will be in the bench against Arsenal, the hopeless Soucek will start and Phillips will come once we are 2 down"

"For me at least it's not about Phillips' quality per se. We've all seen it in the past. It's just that as things stand we simply didn't really need him and the deal just doesn't make sense. He's a symptom of stupidity. We only really have him because Moyes bombed Downes out for whatever reason- we were sorted in CM. Many would argue we were anyway with 'just' Soucek, Alvarez and JWP for those positions if they were rotated sensibly. And arguably they were functioning OK as a unit. Now we have to make space for a player who is rustier than a bullseye speedboat that we've spunked a load of money on and won't be up to speed for weeks. Why??? It just wasn't needed. We don't even have him past the end of the season anyway. It's like we're just doing the lad a favour and upsetting the apple cart at the same time by taking away even more attacking players in order to do it. Even if he ends up doing well, do we really even want him given how much he will cost in fee and wages? He's only just younger than Soucek and JWP. He's going to have to be fucking excellent to make that worthwhile. Particularly if JWP and Soucek are both undroppable as it seems. (Alvarez SHOUD be undroppable) so where does he even fit in long term, let alone now? The smart play here is to send him back and bring Downes back here at the end of the season if he's doing really well for Saints. Regardless of how Phillips plays, unless he's going to score 10 goals for us before May, or unless one of the others gets a bad injury, this whole thing was just an expensive waste of time. I'm just really fucked off with the club for doing this. I'm not fucked off with Phillips as he's decent and can play better than he's shown so far, but it was a silly move."

"southbankbornnbred 3:18 Mon Feb 5 no, I want some consistency from the prick in charge. it wasn't so long ago he was bullshitting about kudus needing time to settle in before getting a chance (he'd just scored a hat trick for ajax prior to joining), yet the same rules don't apply for phillips. he then adopts a formation/system (4CMs) that no modern manager has ever/would ever tried/try and shoehorns him in for an instant debut after sitting on the bench for two fucking years. half a million a week down the drain"

"FFS - give the guy a chance! He's played two games, including away at Old Trafford, after barely kicking a ball for the strongest club side in the world. He will need a few games to get up to speed and settled into our system (which will appear a bit alien to him, having played most of his top-level football under Bielsa: who wanted to get onto the front foot regardless). I have no idea if he will work out or not. He might not. But at least give him a run of games first!"

"I could quite well be Philips who insisted on that, Zoso. Someone suggested that he's got a return to Leeds lined up if they get promoted. They're welcome to him based on his 2 appearances so far. It could be one of the most pointless signings we've ever made, and that's saying something."

I bet someone at Man City is getting a bollocking for not including a mandatory purchase in the loan deal.

Flynn Downes is playing really well in a Southampton side that is unbeaten in something like 25 games. Their fans love him and he is an integral part of that team. Crazy that we would contemplate bringing in Phillips on huge wages. Obviously the Downes loan was already done and he is no doubt benefiting from playing regular football but he should be brought back for next season (rather than buying Phillips) as back up for Alvarez (and actually given some game time). Moyes is crap at using his squad to the extent that he looses players like Fornals and Benrahma.

"Yup, I mean we've all seen him play a hell of a lot better in a Leeds or England shirt, but I think at least for me he (and the rest of the Jan window) is just a symptom of how poorly managed the squad is. The nonsensical mismatch of incomings and outgoings, leaving us with a comically misshapen squad. Just, what were they thinking signing a bloke who plays in a position of strength for us, who has barely played for 18 months and only has a couple of months with us anyway? What a waste of everyone's time and money. Even worse if this is tied somehow into giving them Paqueta at the end of the season. We'd be fucking insane to pull the trigger on that now. (So it'll likely be done if Moyes is still in charge)"

"Definitely not a position that should've been prioritised, anyone with a braincell knew that, and it's been a car crash of a start. But let's be honest, he's not the first good footballer to look atrocious under the fraud managing us, especially early on. Paqueta & Kudus both got pelters on here early doors, now we can't come close to winning games or even competing with mid table Championship clubs without them, Paqueta especially. Mad they we have to hope and pray this betting scandal rumbles on into next season, because if he's sold, we're in for a relegation battle."

"claypole 11:37 100%. We needed cover for Alvarez- not short term competition for Alvarez, who was good yesterday by the way. Looks twice the player of Phillips TBH. What we really need in the squad there is, ummmm, Flynn Downes. Ironically. Most people seemed to say 'Don;t really need him but at least he's a quality player'- me included. Well not it's abundantly clear the first part is true, but also the second part looks on very shaky ground so far. I can't blame Phillips- the bloke made a bad career choice and now he's trying to rectify it. I fucking blame out idiot manager who thought we needed this player more than any sort of winger or striker. And I'm afraid I've got to give some of the blame to Stiedten as well. What was he doing all month? As well as the summer window went (and I will continue to lavish praise for that) this was an absolute farce. Two players who are eminently useful for us out the door leaving us threadbare and having to play players out of position, and one who we absolutely did not need and who's presence is only exacerbating the last point. Ironically we played a hell of a lot better without Phillips yesterday as well. I really hope we change the manager in the summer because this is a shambolic way to run a premier league football club. Shambolic."

more money down the drain because Moyes is obsessed by certain players. to me he seems stuck on chasing rejects from the 'top 6'.

... and I can only echo what others have said. A complete waste of funds when you look at the areas of the team we're crying out for reinforcements. We don't have a striker or left winger worth talking about in the squad.
