Kalvin Philips Done
West Ham United is delighted to confirm the signing of England midfielder Kalvin Phillips on loan until the end of the 2023/24 season. The 28-year-old joins the Hammers from Manchester City and could make his debut in Thursday’s Premier League fixture with AFC Bournemouth at London Stadium.
Re: Kalvin Philips Done
"Eh? But he didn't say there anything about Rice living up to his fee. All he said was that Rice had to deal with the pressure of it. Here's another quote from Souness from earlier this season: ""Is Declan Rice a great player? Not yet, but he could be, if he can improve on these two very important aspects of being a world-class midfielder. Firstly, he needs to score more goals. Secondly, he has to make that cute, clever pass forward to create chances for others. Unfortunately, I’m not sure they are qualities that can be coached."" So he said that not only is Rice not a great player now, but that he thinks he never will be. Because to be a great midfielder, you need to score, assist and defend."

"It's not me finding it difficult to understand what he's saying. 'It's not Declan's fault that someone has paid £105m for him. He has to live with that. I had that when I was a player I was a record transfer between two English clubs. I didn't ask for that fee but I dealt with it, and I'm sure Declan will too.' So he doesn't rate him, yet reckons Rice will be able to live up to his £105M price tag. Righto!"

"Well, not if you need everything spelled out for you, I suppose. Look, Souness thinks that a quality midfielder has to be able to score, assist and defend in equal measure. That's why he doesn't rate Rice, or Philips or most other midfielders these days probably."

"360, he would have surely got him in based on his time at Leeds and looking to rekindle that? But like you say even there he played his best football in an attacking side…."

Re: Kalvin Philips Done
"The way I see it with Moyes is that he thinks a lot like a person who isn't actually in the football business. He makes armchair sportsman decisions about players. The players he wants are the ""names"" in our own league. If you play for the best clubs or England etc.. he wants you. His opinion of a player is probably just based on when his team went up against them. He should be finding players to solve his problems not just getting them because they are an available ""name"". It's like he's in Selfridges looking for some dodgy looking designer jacket from a few seasons a go cos it's on sale. I think he got the idea from Simeone at Ateltico. Where he got a lot of misfits and player from former top clubs in there and formed a defensive but skilful counter attacking team and won La Liga. But Simeone is a genuine coach from a culture of football where flair is literally the baseline of the game. Everyone can dribble, pass and move. Moyes comes from a football era that never coached that, doesnt know how it works and doesnt even believe in it. And his ego won't let anyone else who can coach it have a say. So he's just stuck."
Re: Kalvin Philips Done
"Massive Attack, Souness said a few times that Rice was predictable and no good at passing or shooting. Below is what he said last year, and shows his view on how all midfielders should be. It's nonsense really. The attitude of someone who played in an era when full backs never ventured forward and there was no need for an anchor man in midfield specialising in the defensive side of the game. “This midfield role is a vital part of any team because in an ideal world, it’s multi-dimensional – you are creative, you chip in with goals and you’ve got a defensive head at all times. If you’ve got all three of those attributes, you’re worth your weight in gold. For me, Rice has just one of them.”"

"I also questioned this signing when it was mentioned. Even if Philips was up to speed it never made sense to spend that much money on another CDM. Essentially the backup to Alvarez costs even more than Alvarez! For the life of me I dont understand why we knew Paq would be out for months and didnt try to find another no.10 / creative player? We have a squad with ZERO creative midfielders right now. Fornals, Benny gone, Lanzini gone etc.. And he gets in a rusty CDM who hasn't played regularly in 3 yrs !!! he needs sacking just on that one alone."

Nagel Souness doesn't rate Rice? I must have missed that one. All I've seen is he thinks he'll live up to his price tag.

"Sydney - You're very easily amused, aren't you. Nobody cares that Pep has 'apologized' for what he said about Phillips a couple of years ago, and nobody cares what Souness thinks about Phillips. And we all want Phillips to come good, because we're West Ham fans and he plays for West Ham."
Re: Kalvin Philips Done
"Massive Attack 12:53 Tue Feb 20 This the same Souness who doesn't rate Declan Rice either? Yeah, wouldn't pay too much attention to anything he says. He loves putting down central midfielders. ""None of 'em are as good as I was,"" he thinks."

Re: Kalvin Philips Done
"I saw Pep in a press conference apologies to him for calling him unfit and overweight when he came back from the last euros! WTF prompted that? Bit late really 2 years too late in fact. Souness on TS made semse though, doesn't rate him due to the limited amount of games he has played in the PL, most with a Leeds side who got relegated and its only about 60, as he said he needs more milage under his belt before he can be considered a top class PL player, also questioned his move to Man City and it was maybe a mistake, obviously not on the financial front but he hasn't featured really or progressed and quite rightly said his exploits with England have all come against some pretty bang average teams so nothing to see in that respect. Personally, hope he comes good but not sure he will, looks well off the pace and intensity needed for the PL"

"Souness today repeating similar things that I was saying about him when we were about to sign him... https://www.facebook.com/share/v/6CdEiTw82LdruDps/ Fraud of a top 6 Footballer, absolutely nowhere near the top half of the table quality and good to see a neutral on the topic calling him out for once."

"It‚Äôs ironic that Moyes claimed a focus on recruiting the best of the lower league players, and one of the championship‚Äôs best performers is on loan from us, whilst we pay a fortune on this fragile rock cսnt."

"He's got 11 games left with us after his suspension, and him not being allowed to play in the last game of the season against City. He shouldn't be starting any games. We shouldn't be planning anything with him."
Re: Kalvin Philips Done
"Moyes is doing a Cresswell if he starts him again. I was considering betting that we would have a player sent off against Forest, thought it would be Phillips after seeing the line up. Just didn't think he would actually be that stupid. Like Cresswell's sending off Moyes should have done something after his yellow but dithered. How come he can take Alvarez off after a yellow but not a favourite? I can see Phillips being wound up against Everton. Dyche will have that sorted you can bet ?ü§î?üòÄ"

Re: Kalvin Philips Done
"comment from a Leeds fan on Talksport YT channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQi8jduNdDo ""As a leeds fan i can say souness is spot on. Kalvin Phillips was a bang average mid table championship midfielder for years, until bielsa came in during the summer of 2018. And like with so many leeds players, he somehow managed to squeeze more out of them than anyone ever thought possible. He accentuated their positives and for quite a long while he was excellent at camouflaging their negatives. Once Phillips lost bielsa, he lost what made him very good in the first place. Talent wise hes a championship midfielder, but he had a system centred around him at leeds that made him look far better than he ever actually was. I laughed when he joined man city, as i knew that he misplaced far too many simple passes and committed far too many fouls to ever be considered for a man city side. That never mattered at leeds, but in a pep guardiola man city team... it was never going to cut it."" Confidence player apparently... Downes would have been better it seems."
