Kalvin Philips Done

Post El Coucho »

West Ham United is delighted to confirm the signing of England midfielder Kalvin Phillips on loan until the end of the 2023/24 season. The 28-year-old joins the Hammers from Manchester City and could make his debut in Thursday’s Premier League fixture with AFC Bournemouth at London Stadium.

"I’heard it said at the time that bringing in Phillips was a waste as we didn’t need him, yet you look at how we do when Alvarez is out of the team you can then understand the need for cover. We lost 3-2 to Brentford, 5-0 to Fulham, drew 2-2 with Sheffield Utd, although the ref robbed us in that game. Soon after his arrival we lost 6-0 to Arsenal where Alvarez only played 45 mins. Then there is the latest loss to Newcastle where Alvarez was out. Where it’s all gone wrong is Phillips is out of shape and way off the pace to do the job he was hired for. So hopefully after today’s game against Spurs we will have Alvarez back for the rest of the year and can shore up the defense again without having to rely on Phillips for cover. However in the summer we will still need someone that can step in and play that role at a high level. Maybe Downes? Who knows but in hindsight Phillips has been a disaster for us. Personally he should expect the abuse."

"I just don’t think calling a loan player useless as he’s getting on a coach is really going to help him, or us as a team. Likewise giving the fan the finger is not the brightest response. It’s done now, let’s hope he can try and prove a few people (me included) wrong between now and the end of the season."

If Moyes even let's him step foot on that pitch tonight then i wish them both in a coma. the disrespect he has shown to paying fans is amazing. He has cost us so fucking much and the only person I blame more than him is that prick picking the team

"Watched Southampton as well yesterday and Downes was very effective in the DM role, as he has been all season. Beggers belief that we are paying Phillips £130k pw to abuse our own fans..."

"Russ Agree with most of that. However I was one of a few who said he wasn't that good a player. I never rated him, for some bizare reason he was lauded over Rice, especially for England. He had a couple of good seasons one of which was in the Championship. He's not a goal scoring threat or assist maker. City bought him to stop others buying what everyone thought was a good player. If a manager like Pep finds out pretty soon that the player isn't worth game time I'll take that. His actions of giving the finger to a fan who called him useless is off a player/person who reckons he will get away with it and it seems like he will under Moyes. This is ridiculous. Many players have not had that support Fornals for one who is almost a legend for his performances and goals under far greater pressure than Phillips, who seems to think he is better than our club,Fornals never had this delusion that's why fans loved him. Moyes doesn't deserve the fans support neither does Phillips. Simon S. these are the reasons why fans shouldn't support the player,it doesn't seem pathetic to me just the likes of you that think a mild jest is. There was no swearing from any of the fans, just kids asking for autographs. I doubt very much that you have even heard/seen the video clip."

"Btw, watched the Ipswich-Southampton game yesterday and seen quite a few Southampton matches this season (pure chance: they have been televised regularly in that division). Downes is currently (and I stress ""currently"") a better player than Phillips. His time on loan has sharpened him and he'll most likely return to us a better player. It was always a marginal call, whether to loan him out. And perhaps the regular football has massively boosted him, as it does many players. But he's a better player today than the current version of Kalvin Phillips."

"Phillips is done at West Ham - let's be honest, everybody already knows that. As several people have pointed out, when he signed there was a widespread view that we didn't really need him...but that he had been a good player at Leeds (and his early England days) and so we went along with it. But he's barely kicked a ball for two years and his time here has already turned into unmitigated disaster. Now he's sealed his fate by swearing at this ""own"" fans etc. Few can be blamed for this (although Moyes, as manager, should have been on top of the scouting etc), but it turned out that the shiny England international version of Phillips some people thought we were getting was, when we opened the parcel from Man City, overweight, broken, mouldy, and prone to regular faults. As a club, we should have done our homework on him better than we did. He's broken - for whatever reasons (and, frankly, they are Man City's and his to sort out in the long-term). But he is broken. We're not a charity and we're not here to rehabilitate other teams' players. I wouldn't bat an eyelid if we sent him back today - although I doubt we can unless his broken his contract (he probably hasn't). So he'll sit on our bench. It's a harsh and costly lesson that I hope Moyes learns. Thankfully, we didn't buy him."

"After his Man City disaster what he needed was an arm round him to give him confidence and coaching to get him up to speed again He has probably signed for the worst manager in the league for that, I bet he is delighted he has only ended up with Moyes finally on a loan basis so he can fuck off sharpish Watched Soton last night and Downes was impressive, we should be bringing him back as the Soucek replacement and spend the £40M for Phillips on a CB and a RB"

"I think there needs to be some perspective here. When it filtered out he was definitely signing I think the majority of us were in the camp of ""We don't really need him but it can't do us any harm"". I mean, he was excellent at Leeds, totally compromised at Man City, but still an England international. Yes, we needed a striker more than a DM, but, as I said, what harm could it do? Things haven't worked. He looks slow, unfit and well off the required level. I don't think any of us expected that. I expected him to take a few games to get up to speed then he would be flying. I was wrong. He looks physically and mentally broken. He's obviously got issues. And I think Moyes is right to defend him and has a responsibility to defend him. But Moyes does need to tread carefully and if he does start to point the finger at the fans for this mess then he will end up being the loser. All he has said is that he will support Phillips and he urges the fans to do so too. That's fine. But he must also acknowledge that Phillips shouldn't get a free ride and, like very player, is open to criticism if or when required. Moyes also needs to be careful that the mistake of signing Phillips that he made is air-brushed and turned into Phillips form is the fans fault. I hope it doesn't go there. What Phillips did getting on the coach was stupid and he should be punished. Moyes cannot allow that to go on. And if he allows discretion and for Phillips to get away with it then he opens up a big can of worms for himself. Club need to come out with a statement and say player has been punished internally and its end of matter."

"And in terms of him sticking up his finger to our fans, no it wasn't crime of the century, but I'd be looking at every opportunity to sack him and potentially save the club millions. To think I laughed at someone who suggested Downes was better when he joined. We have been better keeping Coventry than take on Phillips, with hindsight."

"He's easily our worst signing ever, at this stage. Apart from Boogers, you could argue that all of those players you've listed below made some kind of positive contribution at some point to the club. Roberto must have made a save at some point during the season, for example. I can't think of anything positive Phillips has done for the club. He's been great for the opposition. And we're paying him an absolute fortune for it."

"""something & nothing really"" totally disagree. isn't he currently our highest earning player, why can't be set an example. he isn't fucking tiring himself out in training or on the pitch, so why didn't he ignore the lone bloke shouting and screaming are a minute of his time to sign a few autographs for the kids not 'abusing' him. I tell you why, he's a lazy northern cսnt"

"something & nothing really. Bloke calling him useless is fair enough, because he is, and him giving the finger, so what. Hardly the crime of the century, and haven't seen or heard the bloke it was directed at crying about it."
