"terry-h 9:00 Sun Apr 14 Have to agree, every time I see clips of that 73 National I still think Crisp is going to win because he was so far ahead but Red Rum nabs it on the line.. Richard Pitman admitted he made a schoolboy error using the whip in his right hand and Crisp veered of course and then Brian Fletcher went wide with his run so Crisp wouldn't hear him creeping up. Great race. Loved Red Rum when I was a kid. Had the winner in my picks yesterday but was annoyed because had Delta Work as a choice in the last three years. Some ""experts"" said he was finished but he came second! Bollocks. Just looks like a normal race now. You never had 15 odd horses challenging over the last couple of fences."

"I doubt there will ever be another National horse to be as good as the great Red Rum. Three wins 1973,1974 and 1977. Two seconds 1975 and 1976. Over 100 races and never fell. All before the fences were made easier. Lived a happy retirement until 30 years old. Absolutely magnificent!!!"

El Scorchio 6:47 Sat Apr 13 Didn't they drop the fence heights and make the course easier a while back? Death and carnage was what got it the headlines in the past - now it's just a springtime trot around Richmond Park and no one outside the horsey fraternity really cares.

Was on IAM at 9's for a tenner (boosted)... McCoy has been yapping all week about the horse so went on his say so more so then any personal fancies... too be honest he has to be one of the best national winners ever... he finished like Secretariat after rounding the elbow... after nigh on 4 miles as well... massively impressive... great race.. * round of applause*

"It feels like there’s so much less fanfare about the National than there used to be 5-10 years ago. Used to be bits in the media all week about it, this year I didn’t even know it was on until yesterday afternoon. Is it being softly sidelined or is it just my imagination?"

I think Chemical Energy has a better chance than his odds would indicate. Past form would indicate he should finish in front of Mahler Mission who is 14/1.

I backed Foxy Jacks at 100/1 earlier in the week and it is now a lot shorter. Trainer Mouse Morris won the national with Rule the world in 2006 and this will hopefully have a squeak too. Mac Tottie and Noble Yeats my other each way fancies
