Woke watch
"There is a very good section on GB news where the ludicrous idiocies of Wokeness are looked at I thought we would should have one for WHO. I'll start with Baptiste on BBC: In Hungary,an ambassador's family are kidnapped by Islamic terrorists and carry out atrocities. At the end of the last episode Baptiste finds out that it is a false flag operation and conveniently, the real culprits are white supremacists who want to stop all immigration. Coronation Street ITV a gay black footballer is stopped by the police, because he is driving an expensive car. He is pushed to the ground during an altercation, and damages his leg threatening his career. Could have been written by Dawn Butler or a BLM activist."

"riosleftsock 4:56 Fri Sep 3 Re: Woke watch No, that's not what you usually see. What you see is a professional attempt to not jump to conclusions to feed the prejudices of horrible little fuckwits like yourself. Anyway, shouldn't you be licking the Arsenal end of the internet for anti-vaccine shit to post?"

Re: Woke watch
"ioc has a point though. How many times do we hear violent attackers described as a ""man"", a ""local man"", a ""british man"" or ""bristol man"" when in fact he's either an illegal immigrant or asylum seeker or recent immigrant? Or the number of times we see reports of naughty cars mounting pavements and killing people. I think it's called Coulter's law, the longer they go without identifying the suspect/perpetrator the more likely it is to be an Islamic terrorist. But when its a white english person, we get the full face picture, name and details immediately as well as 'far-right extremist' in the headline. If you haven't noticed this, just read the papers or watch the bbc for a month or two and see if its true."

"Our Canadian snowflake is trying to blame the media for his own rather nasty prejudices once again. Not heard much from the ""Young Turks"" these days - which is surprising given the influence you think they had/have. The point is clear in three short sentences (not even full paragraphs - Terror attack, Extremist, Sri Lanka, ISIS. That is the fucking lede you twat - burying it would be in the middle or bottle or wandering on about it being a lovely morning in New Zealand."

Yes and you have an actual audience for your pidgin English character. At least I own up to my language errors.

"Arf! I believe oicks is actually trying to tell a journalist how to do his job. I mean, it's hilarious - the melon can hardly string a paragraph together and when he does, he invariably sends his reader into a coma. This site is amazing."

"claypole 4:10 Fri Sep 3 ""Burying the lede""(because of some weird journalism practice) or lead is taking what should be in the lead paragraph and putting it somewhere else. Something that happened two years ago, however tragic, is not the ""lede"" in a current news story."

"Irons The point (as you surely know) was that I would not have succeeded in burying the fact at all by putting it in the third sentence. Anyhow, enough of your rabbit holes, a rare afternoon trip to the pub beckons... Have a good weekend."

"Fo the Communist 4:06 Fri Sep 3 ""Trust me, if an editor had asked me to bury an important fact and I had gone away and stuck said fact in the third sentence then my arse wouldn't have touched the ground on the way out."" So you think you actually would have been fired for not doing journalism poorly enough? The more you talk about your journalism and journalism in general, the worse you make the journalism you practiced look."

"Irons. I have no idea what led the BBC to report the incidents to which you refer to the way you describe. And to be honest - having agreed that some reports do indeed tend to play down Islam as a cause - I don't have time to go back and look. I have merely said that the report in hand, on this incident, is perfectly fine in my view in terms of balance and fact. Trust me, if an editor had asked me to bury an important fact and I had gone away and stuck said fact in the third sentence then my arse wouldn't have touched the ground on the way out."

Re: Woke watch
"Fo the Communist 3:45 Fri Sep 3 You answer my question first. Why did the BBC deem the variety of extremist in other stories from last few days critical enough to be in the headline and the lead paragraph and not this one? Again when one or two words would do. And again the lede comes from lead, so yes, unless you are pushing clickbait journalism, the third paragraph is burying something deemed critical in other reporting."

Re: Woke watch
"Sorry Irons, you don't 'bury' something' in the third sentence of a story. Particularly one where there are facts of greater importance (the number of poor people gravely injured for example) I assume the 'buried' element in your eyes is that he was an Islamic nutter?"

Re: Woke watch
"Fo the Communist 3:25 Fri Sep 3 No. There are lots of great pieces that I disagree with lots of the content. Read Glenn Greenwald, for instance. The lede comes from the lead paragraph, not the third. So yes burying something in the third that is deemed critical in other stories, when a word or two would change it, is bad journalism. You have not answered why it is important in the headline and lead of the other stories."

Re: Woke watch
"Irons. In three paragraphs you have the number of people hurt and how, the death of the attacker, that it was a terrorist act by an IS-inspired extremist and that the attacker was under surveillance. It is also reporting the PM's first words on the incident. If it were an attempt to bury important information it is a poor attempt. You seem to define poor journalism as any story written in a way other than to your liking."

Re: Woke watch
"Fo the Communist 3:09 Fri Sep 3 It is easily introduced with at most two words. And the BBC is willing to do it in both headlines and lead/lede paragraphs. Why was the type of extremism vital in that story? What is the difference? ""There have been cases when it appears the motives behind attacks (mostly Islamic-inspired) have been suspiciously played down but I don't see this as a case of that."" Hard to play it down when the Prime Minister has to comes out and say it but you not seeing bad journalism when you don't want to is unfortunately a bit of theme in our discussions."

Re: Woke watch
The line is the attack took place and its consequences. That it was IS-inspired is clearly important too and is introduced very early in the story. There have been cases when it appears the motives behind attacks (mostly Islamic-inspired) have been suspiciously played down but I don't see this as a case of that.

Re: Woke watch
Fo the Communist 2:52 Fri Sep 3 Third paragraph? Not the headline? Do you believe the type of terror and extremism should not be in the headline or at least the first paragraph or the link?

"Seems to me like the main points are covered in the first three paragraphs. What did they miss? ""Police in New Zealand shot and killed a ""violent extremist"" after he stabbed and wounded at least six people in an Auckland supermarket. ""Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the incident was a ""terrorist attack"" carried out by a Sri Lankan national who was under police surveillance. ""The man, who has not been identified, was a supporter of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, Ms Ardern said."""
