Woke watch
"There is a very good section on GB news where the ludicrous idiocies of Wokeness are looked at I thought we would should have one for WHO. I'll start with Baptiste on BBC: In Hungary,an ambassador's family are kidnapped by Islamic terrorists and carry out atrocities. At the end of the last episode Baptiste finds out that it is a false flag operation and conveniently, the real culprits are white supremacists who want to stop all immigration. Coronation Street ITV a gay black footballer is stopped by the police, because he is driving an expensive car. He is pushed to the ground during an altercation, and damages his leg threatening his career. Could have been written by Dawn Butler or a BLM activist."

"To be completely honest I only read the one article on the BBC about it but that's what they stated and if there was worse stuff, I'm surprised they didn't mention it."

Re: Woke watch
Never heard of that Alex Belfield so just googled it. Seems like he was sent to prison for mocking things that public figures tweeted in public. Might be a bell end but not sure it should be illegal.

Re: Woke watch
There are two contentions here. One is that people will tend to seek out media outlets that reinforce their own opinions The second is that most people accept what they are told in the media OF THEIR CHOICE without question. Only one of these is true. If both were true we would never have had Brexit.

Ooh! Hark at the members of the intelligentsia discussing the behaviour of the lumpen proletariat. You two are in danger of suffocating on your own air of superiority.

"Having two powerful estates, each trying to be the ""true"" top dog running the country always creates an atmosphere where an explanation for any action/inaction can be placed firmly at the doorstep if the ""the other lot"" (wot dun it). It's the story, not the participants that sells news in such a scenario, so the public are fed and lap up whichever angle their choice of media provider is promoting at the time."

"SurfaceAgentX2Zero 8:32 Fri Sep 16 I agree. Like politicians, lawyers are needed and provided an essential service but their service should be limited as much as possible and they should be highly scrutinised and called out when they abuse the system. The Roe v. Wade thing in the States shows it cuts more than one way as well."

Re: Woke watch
Go woke go broke……It’s real! Look at CNN ratings have plummeted just like all the liberal networks and now we have seen several firings and Don Lemon being removed from prime time to a morning slot. Big changes at CNN as the new boss gets it. The other fuckwit networks will follow soon. Not much longer till the woke brigade are out of fashion and will soon be a distant memory.

"Fo the Communist 1:27 Fri Sep 16 ""People - and I accept this isn't you - should stop throwing up their arms and wailing about 'lefty lawyers' and begin to hold the Government - and its failings - to account."" People can rightly do both, unless they have locked themselves into trying to defend one side. The legal system is rightly one of the powerful modern Estates but can be and has been abused. Just like the First Estate."
Re: Woke watch
"The fact is this country more often has a Tory than Labour government. Make of that what you will because for sure a government that can have untrammelled power with a mandate from less than 30% of the electorate won’t worry too much about accountability. Though this government in common with previous Tory administrations must pay attention to, even dance to the tune of, the right wing media. Still though Braverman, as with the mendacious Patel, will not manage to reduce illegal immigration, we should all be grateful that City bankers etc will have the cap removed from their inadequate bonuses. When that happens it will herald the first Brexit win of any note."

Re: Woke watch
"It's true. The Tories are in power and have been in power for a long time, so it's their fault. They and only they are accountable. Of course you might feel someone else would do an even worse job, but that's an entirely different matter and one of conjecture, at that. That's entirely unarguable. However, I don't recall Labour admitting this when they neglected to supervise the banks and it all went tits. Quite rightly, nobody believed them when they screamed it wasn't their fault and they got kicked out. It will be the immigration debacle that does for the Tories and quite rightly, too. Inactions have consequences. Just ask Nick Clegg."

Re: Woke watch
"Mashed I was actually trying not to be overtly party political in my post for the reasons you say. But the fact is that only one political party has the power to govern and that is the incumbent one. I take your point about Government being one institution among many but one shouldn't downplay the power it does have to bring about change. It has the numbers to effect change but it seems to me it is lacking either competency or conviction. Never mind a domestic immigration policy, we have seen in the past strong governments take us to war, possibly illegally and against vast swathes of public opinion. It could do so because it had both the numbers and control of the other institutes of government (note small g) in the way that was necessary to take such drastic action. The current Government has the former but not the latter. People - and I accept this isn't you - should stop throwing up their arms and wailing about 'lefty lawyers' and begin to hold the Government - and its failings - to account."

"""The government is not an all powerful institution. It is one institution amongst many. The soft power of the Civil Service is immense and they have the power to thwart government policy. That's true regardless of the party in government and is why Tony Benn's quote and 'Yes Minister' resounded with the public."" You're absolutely spot on here tbf. But the question should be.... ""What the fuck are the government doing about it?"""

"""One group fills planes, the other one empties them. It is a lazy assumption. If you said that opposition powers are in favour of unlimited migration and that the Tories don't do nearly enough to stop it, fair enough I'd agree, but saying they are the same is not true and lazy."" I used to think the same as you, that its incompetence. The reality is intentions don't matter. The end result is what matters. If you pay someone to sort a problem out and 12 years later the problem is worse than ever, at what point do you suspect they had no intention of sorting it? Call that lazy if you want, I'd call it trusting results not promises"
