"The old line ''I won't believe anything until he's holding up our shirt on the OS'' seems more prevalent than ever now. Fuck only knows what is going on, but the only real possible take away we can conclude is that we ain't paying any cսnt who are asking for too much?"

You never know whether some of these bids are to put pressure on other clubs to agree something else … ie Villa with Duran Just need to shit or get off the pot Ones like Todibo who want to go somewhere else like Juve should be binned off & we move on

"Also worth noting that despite similarities to how Lopetegui plays, last season Villareal used a 442 formation, so it's always possible that Sorloth is just much better in a 2 man attack. If so, that's a massive black mark against him, unless we maybe play Kudus as a second striker (which personally I'd like to see)."

"""Let's hope we get the same player as he was last season, and not the player he was for the rest of his career."" Yeah, sure, but it's not like he's played every season at the same club, with the same team mates, same manager, etc. Maybe him scoring 26 goals last season was mainly down to how Villareal set up. Their manager prefers a high pressing, possession game with attacks coming from the flanks, exactly the same as Lopetegui. Surely it's better to get someone who has proven to be excellent within a similar system than someone who might have been more prolific over the years but playing a completely different way? We've gone down that route before and it rarely works well. That said, for £30m I'd probably prefer Duran, even if he's more of a risk."

£30m does seem a tad excessive! Duran has got to be the better bet surely? Perhaps there will be a few more exits and we will get both?

"Sorloth for £30m? Almost 29, 2 possibly 3 good seasons in his whole career (1 of which was in a decent league), failed in his previous attempt in the Premier League. All that time to find a striker, and that's the best we can come up with? Let's hope we get the same player as he was last season, and not the player he was for the rest of his career."

Just been told that we offered Villareal £25m for Sorloth but they rejected. We were going back in with £30m (expected to be accepted) but held back due to a thigh injury and awaiting assessment. That's now completed and its said that he would pass a medical as it stands even with the injury which is expected to keep him out for 2 to 3 weeks. So we are going to up the offer and it should be accepted. This is why its taken a while.

I'm not sure how highly rated Irving is but his recall may be the reason we cashed in on Downes? He seems a very positive bloke though. https://www.whufc.com/news/irving-be-involved-brilliant-and-im-loving-it

dealcanvey - Mazraoui was very highly regarded at Ajax and was born and lived in Holland all of his life until the move to Bayern. Seems to be first choice RB at Bayern in that he played 29 times last season inc. the CL semi final v R. Madrid.... I think he would be the more exciting option with a small element of risk attached.

If the papers thread can be believed Man Utd have to sell AWB before they can sign Mazraoui which presumably gives us the upper hand in either getting Mazraoui ahead of them or getting AWB on the cheap. Also read that Mazraoui's old Ajax teammates Kudus and Alvarez have been on to him to tell him to come to us so hopefully Sullivan will get his cheque book out and do the business. I haven't paid too much attention to AWB but by all accounts he is a very defence minded RB which doesn't seem to fit with JL's desire to have attacking full backs?

Dont know a thing about the Moroccan RB at Bayern. Surely AWB or KWP would be the better options? Proven premier league players.

Strange that he went from Hearts to what I think was a 3rd tier German team Think that team might even gone out of business so he moved to Austria a year later Understand Steidten had noticed him so we signed him & loaned him back Was all a bit of a mysterious purchase

"There is rightly a lot of impatience over signings. We have been let down in previous windows with selling players and watching targets go elsewhere. It would be no surprise for some deals not to happen or to happen late in the window. Agents want to tout their players around clubs to make the most money for them. Clubs come up with unrealistic deals whether they want to sell the players or not. One thing which is clear is that there are clubs about who need to sell to buy and we don't appear to be one of them yet. FFP is coming home to roost for a lot of clubs hence the shocking ticket pricing. The bubble is bursting, greed has overinflated transfer fees and wages. Anyone piling in now is going to end up losing millions on some of these players."

I saw an article from June last year on X . Urging Brighton to sign Irving saying he was the perfect replacement for macalister .it Wouldn't surprise me if this is a steitden masterstroke . Here's hoping.

Forgot about Irving.. Having been based in Germany for a while you have to assume that he is a TS signing so hopefully he will prove to be useful.

"As it stands, Cornet and Ings are to all intents and purposes new signings given Moyes decided to totally disregard them. They might prove to be shit, they might not. But they're players we couldn't factor in last year. Irving is also a 'new' signing. Might be good enough, might not be...but maybe he's shown as much as Downes already to be thought of as a more likley contributor. As pointed out by someone else, we've been after both Garcia and Kante, so it seems pretty likely he considers another CM as a key part to add to the squad. Agreed though, if we add in Duran, one of the three RBs linked (I'd quite like to poach the Man Utd Moroccan target and leave them with the player they don't want), a Centre Back and another Attacking wide player, maybe with Soucek leaving and either Cornet, Ings or Antonio leaving...then we'll be in decent shape."

"If, as looks likely, we end up with something like Guilherme Kilman Fotheringham Duran Jota Silva AWB (or other RB) Another CB then it will have been a pretty good window and the squad has definitely been improved. Presumably we will also bring in another CDM but I would have been perfectly happy keeping Downes and doubt his replacement will prove to be better in the long run. As others have said the 3/4 youth team players that should join the first team squad this season will also provide better depth and will hopefully prove to be great long term assets."
