Apart from at left back... Emerson will need to play every minute if Cresswell is the back up

The key is JL using the subs bench well and players accepting that they may get subbed after 60 mins without being pissed off. Keeps them on their toes and will also help avoid burnout and injuries.

"I know it’s a radical concept but I’d like to see us having players pushing each other for a place in the team. Over a 38 game league season & hopefully lots of domestic cup games (even if no Europe) you need a squad & competition That’s been part of our problem under Moyes The same group get flogged to death & there is no confidence in the others. I’d love us to have Fullkrug AND Duran, Alvarez AND Rodriguez, 4 centre halves & Coufal AND AWB competing at right back"

"So I was assuming that we would get either Duran or Füllkrug, but some seem to think we might go for both. FMOB! I more or less agree with Leroys about the six players in midfield and attack but does anyone know if Loppy ever plays with two strikers? And I don't think Rodriguez is joining to spend most of his time on the bench. Loppy is going to have some interesting challenges in terms of managing the squad, and that's before you even mention whoever is still here out of Antonio, Ings, Marshall, Guilherme, JWP, Soucek, Irving, Potts, Orford and Earthy. Having just turned 66 I am royally f*cked off with the club for removing the concessions, but I could almost forgive them if they manage to pull off all this business."

"ludo21 3:45 Sat Aug 3 Player didn't want move as wanted European football. 3 clubs in were us, Man Utd and Juve. Player agreed terms with all three. Juve dropped out and got another player. So player picked Man Utd but they need AWB out before he comes in."

LOL. Can't see us agreeing to Man Utd adding on Mazouri's agent fees to the AWB deal... may as well have gone ahead with Mazouri in the first place.

"An exciting day ahead with Fullkrug, Summerville and Rodriguez all arriving for medicals. I am reliably informed that the Wan Bissaka deal is well and truly on. Player now definitely wants move to London and personal terms agreed. The only thing delaying it is a bit of a bump over agent fees. West Ham questioning why Man Utd suddenly added them to the already agreed fee. Also questioning how you pay £5m agent fees on a £12m transfer. It's a who will blink first. West Ham know Mancs need the deal done to complete Mazouri deal. Mancs know player wants move and we want player. Bit of a stand off. It's hoped that today the clubs can compromise somewhere in the middle and deal can be agreed and should be expected to be around £14.5m. Hope to get this over the line by end of weekend."

I don’t think we will get Duran until after we have played them. We will then try to off load Antonio and possibly Ings if anyone will pay his wages. There will be plenty of takers in Europe for Soucek if we put him up for sale. He scores plenty of goals (incl. Czech) for a midfielder and the slower leagues would suit him.

"Won’t be great to have quality on the bench, options & competition for places Moyes would often take Alvarez off on a yellow so having Rodriquez & Potts means there is cover in game & if he is suspended How about Fullkrug & Duran & move Antonio on? There would be buyers"

"The Villa mate i have here reckons Duran is very much a raw talent, and got loads of it! But also a bit scattergun in he will ping one in the top corner then hit a corner flag with the next or get sent off, frustrates Emery and his staff as he often does his own thing rather than follow instruction but maybe lack of game time sees him too eager. Not against it if it happens just think the German lad is more suited right now, be good if we could get both and unload Ings or maybe even Antonio as well? Mind you i would laugh if we got Duran and then Watkins (who apparently NEVER gets injured) gets injured and out for 3 or 4 months!!!!"

"Fraser - agree that Paqueta will start but that leaves Summerville on the bench. Assuming we play both Alvarez and Rodríguez then that will leave four attacking places for Bowen, Kudus, Paqueta, Summerville, Fulkrug (and Duran?) Against lesser teams Paqueta could play deeper instead of one of Alvarez or Rodríguez but otherwise one of the five is going to be on the bench, most likely Summerville."

Rodríguez on a free is a stroke of genius. He is 30 so will have 2-3 good years ahead of him. Perfect for the progression of Potts and especially Orford. If we had brought in a 25 year old that would have given them little prospect of a route into the first team. Orford can now go out on loan this season while Potts can stay as defensive midfield back up and hopefully be given minutes from the bench… both will know that that they will get a chance in 2-3 years to break into the starting eleven.

"Ludo - why will one of Paqueta or Summerville be on our bench, they play in different positions, I can see Summerville being there sometimes. But Paqueta will start. Kudus will surely play in the middle now, maybe on the left sometimes if we start with a three of Alvarez, Guido and Paqueta against the best sides"

"We are obviously going to have a fantastic bench this season. With a fully fit squad one of Paqueta and Summerville will be on the bench, Duran (if he comes), Antonio, Earthy, JWP and that’s assuming we sell Soucek and Ings. Major advance from Moyes’s time…"

"fraser - Villa want to sell Duran, we want to buy him and the player wants the move, so yea logic would suggest it will still happen. I think Fullkrug is too far down the line to be a smokescreen, so if they both come in where does that leave Antonio, not to mention Ings? Mind you, other clubs have four first team strikers."
