"Maybe the club see Duran as a better option long term and Lop was happy to go along with that, but when Villa went overboard with the price they all might have seen Fullkrug as preferable, at least in the short term. It's likely that the older fella would be a better fit with Lop's setup and is obviously at his peak rather than still learning so would probably have a better first season with us. When you've got a new manager trying to instil a different type of football you need things to start well or probably have to replace him and start all over again."

"Stubbo and exile, that's all very well, but apparently Lop has spoken to Duran numerous times and convinced him that he's wanted and would be our main striker, to the extent that he didn't want Chelsea and burnt his bridges at Villa.. Do you not think that he knows who's best for his team better himself."

"I like the idea of Duran, but I'd have liked the idea of him more if Moyes was still here. He's a quick powerful guy who can run the channels and create chances on his own. Perfectly suited to a team that play low block attack on the counter football. Fullkrug is a back to goal, hold up player who can bring the channels into play, and then arrive in the box for the crosses that get put in. Somewhat like Haller and Scamacca. This is far more suited to the way Lopetegui sets the team up. I like Duran's age profile, and the potential and the spectacular goals he scores...but Fullkrug looks more like a player that will fit the style of football we're likely to start attempting to play. Of course if we can get both for the tactical flexibility, great, but if you had to pick one to thrive under Lopetegui...Fullkrug is probably the one."

"I think it's perfectly acceptable to look at the Ings deal and compare it to the Fullkrug transfer. If Fullkrug isn't a success, then he's a massively expensive failure, because we'll be stuck with him until he's 34."

Fullkrug and Rodriguez medicals today and set to be formally announced later this afternoon. I also see today that we are considering a move for free agent Sergio Roberto. He is well regarded at Barca as a versatile utility player. Main position is right back but can play right midfield. This may be insurance policy for if AWB chooses Inter.

Any Old Iron 12:16 Sun Aug 4 Fullkrug is a German international and has just come from playing a season in the CL for Dortmund.... And you compare him to Ings? Odd. He's 31 for fuck sake - Probably as fit as any player in mid 20's. If you think he is going to struggle with the pace and physicality of the PL then I think you'll be surprised.

"Any Old Iron 12:16 Sun Aug 4 Re: Official Transfer rumours and gossip thread This Füllkrug thing strikes me as Ings all over again. A slow, ageing striker but for twice the money. Zola joined Chelsea at 30. Di Canio was 31 when he joined West Ham. Davids joined Spurs at 32. Gullit turned 33 a few weeks into his Chelsea career and was runner-up Player of the Year. Ibrahimovic 34 to Man Utd. Hierro was 36 when he joined Bolton."

"It's the same old problems with the full backs we've had for years now. You wouldn't blame AVB if he wants to go and play for a giant club in Italy and play in Europe and he's never seemed that keen on coming to us, so we might end up back to Walker-Peters? We need someone as old man Coufal is a disaster waiting to happen. Very unlikely we'll sign a LB, so Emerson will play every week and have to hope he doesn't get injured. The back up to him is scary."

"Scarles hasn't been given much of a run out in any of the friendlies so far though. Can AWB play on the left? And if so, that way we're still back to having a weaknesses the right"

Onsideman. I think what we are looking at someone who can play right or left back. Cresswell is simply there to keep some link to the clubs history… Antonio etc.

Inter Milan have thrown spanner in the works of AWB deal as they have agreed to pay more than us. Man Utd have left it to player to decide which club he wants.
