Re: 2020 Movies (now including 2021 and 2022)
"Northern Sold 4:27 Mon Nov 27 Have you done Apsley House, number one London on Hyde Park Corner? My (and probably most of us's) favourite British hero is Nelson, a man the Duke only met once and thought him 'ridiculous' but Wellington never enjoyed popularity like Nelson (who was a Norfolk parson's son) referring to his troops as 'a band of bastards'. He was born into the army, lived on his privilege and was an unpopular Prime Minister in peacetime, not unlike Churchill. Apsley House really lets you get under his skin. I've never seen so many portraits of Napoleon in my life. Every single room has at least one or two just in case you forget Waterloo, and as you enter the house there's a MASSIVE sculpture of Napoleon as Mars, God of war, sculpted by Antonio Canova, the greatest sculpture of his age. Napoleon hated it apparently as by then he was middle aged and fat. Apsley had to be reinforced so it didn't go through the floor. For a bloke who hated his troops looting, he somehow caught up with Napoleon's carriage at Vittoria and sent back to Britain the greatest Spanish art collection outside of Madrid which eventually became the bedrock of the National Gallery. If you go to Apsley you'll easily see he kept the best stuff for himself. The greatest private gallery I've ever been to is the Villa Borghese in Rome but Apsley House runs it a close second."

"The Great Escaper, Michael Caine - Nice film but nothing great. Glenda Jackson was very good as Caine's characters wife, she passed away not too long after the film was finished."

"20 Days in Mariupol... one of the bravest bits of documentary film making I have ever seen on the screen...certainly not for the faint hearted... oh yeah dont get me wrong there will be the usual handful on here using the Ivan narrative of fake news... film sets... actors... amputee actors etc.. Will see Napoleon this week... reviews are split down the middle so will take it with a pinch of historical bullshit chucked in.... popped down to the National Army museum at Chelsea last week... great day out... if waterloo.is your thing... as it is with me.... to see Marengo (Boneys horse) , Wellingtons coat worn at Waterloo... along with pictons top hat that got shot off in the battle and the surgical saw that lopped off Uxbridges leg... well... thought all my Nspoleonic dreams had came true at once..."

"Looking forward to the remake of Nosferatu, directed by Robert Eggers who also made the excellent The Witch."
Re: 2020 Movies (now including 2021 and 2022)
"Saw Napoleon. I didn't realise he personally led a cavalry charge at Waterloo, hacking down Redcoats left and right..... Honestly the most Hollywood thing ever. I was fuming."
Re: 2020 Movies (now including 2021 and 2022)

"Zico - Blimey, first time you have seen that?? Utter classic. Think most have seen it. I watched My Cousin Vinny, not sure if I watched it originally, not side splitting funny, but very good, Pesci was superb, just one year before Goodfellas."
Re: 2020 Movies (now including 2021 and 2022)
"Anyone seen Saltburn? Personally loved it even though I thought it was quite obvious what was going on so that the big reveal at the end (no, not that one!) was unnecessary. Had strong Stephen Poliakoff vibes. The acting was fantastic, Barry Keoghan has a bright future and will probably be the leading light of his generation and Rosamund Pike was terrific as always. Can imagine many will think that it's pretentious twaddle, which of course it is, but that's the beauty of it...."
Re: 2020 Movies (now including 2021 and 2022)
"I seem to remember years ago you got a short film (almost like a support act) first, then adverts for other films, then Pearl and bloody Dean for god knows how long so we were probably in there for hours even though the film was only and hour and a half. Imagine watching Ben Hur on a hard seat! I think it was Ricky Gervais who said Leonardo Di Caprio went to the Premiere of The Irishman and by the time it finished his date was too old for him!"

Re: 2020 Movies (now including 2021 and 2022)
Branded In Switzerland they always have an intermission in the film regardless of length and virtually everyone goes out to buy drinks and snacks
Re: 2020 Movies (now including 2021 and 2022)
To be fair I do agree regarding the cinema. Its been so long since I last went to the flicks that I dont necessarily associate film watching with going to the cinema as when I watch a film its almost exclusively going to be at home on my sofa which lends itself to being more comfortable when watching a longer film.

"I'm not against long films, as long as I'm enjoying it of course. I went to see the last MI film at the cinema and wasn't too agitated, but give me a 90-100 min film any day. Watching a long film a home shouldn't be a problem though, as you can watch it at your own steam (if watching alone) and that's what I do."

Re: 2020 Movies (now including 2021 and 2022)
"Jim. Back and forward story, yes. I think 90 minutes in a cinema is enough unless you have an INTERMISSION. At home you can just pause for an extra beer."
Re: 2020 Movies (now including 2021 and 2022)
"BRANDED, the Ciro di Marzio back story? if so, yes a brilliant piece of film making. Must admit I buck the trend on this thread in that I like films to be longer. I dont think you can get deep enough in to a story within 90mins to 2hrs, thats obviously providing its a story worth telling. I think the explosion of box sets in recent yrs has altered appetite for longer films. You get used to immersing yourself in a story and the characters that a 2hr film just feels shallow at times."

Re: 2020 Movies (now including 2021 and 2022)
"90 mins is the optimal movie length for me, 2 hours at a push. It's going to have to be a really good movie to make me want to sit down for any longer to watch it."
Re: 2020 Movies (now including 2021 and 2022)
Chim - That's what I have noticed watching these old Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films again. I think the longest was Hound of the Baskervilles done by 20th Century Fox which is 80 minutes. The films done by Universal were anything from an hour to a little longer. Didn't remember they were all short and sweet but you don't get bored. Waiting for Oppenheimer to come out on platform because my bladder would mean I'd miss half of it at the cinema!!

Re: 2020 Movies (now including 2021 and 2022)
"Why do nearly all films need to be three or four fucking hours long these days? My basic problem with going to the cinema is that: A:My poor old bladder or arthritic hip won't make it B: people, particularly young people can't shut the fuck up for that long, and C: editors don't seem to stand up to directors and say 'you know that bit when you say you have to fly down to Florida to meet the mob there? The drive to the private airport, starting the plane, you getting on, a CGI of the plane flying through the clouds, the landing at a private airfield in Florida, getting out of the plane and into a car and driving to your meet at a discreet house somewhere in Florida is about 30 minutes long and as boring as fuck- let's bin it'. All us punters really want to see is an interesting film wrapped up in under two hours written tightly. It in itself is a gift and an art."
