NFL (since 2016)

"Free agency started last night and was pretty crazy some huge money being spent. Osweiler getting £18m a year for the Texans, leaving the Broncos without a QB, Giants have spent a fortune on good but not great players, Oliver Vernon has more guaranteed money than JJ Watt. lots more deals but cant be bothered to list them all."

"Barkley for me was the best player on the board, the Browns should have taken him and then the best available QB at 4, the Giants are the winners"

Giants take a QB and they not only run up the white flag for at least the next 3 seasons. They would lose OBJ to free agency regardless to how much they put on the table. Barkley may not turn out to be the next wonder back. But time to get a fresh QB up to league standard is a luxury the Giants ownership don't have. It's a win now scenario.

"southbank, stop worrying. you had a lucky escape and got a more reliable character, id have still gone Allen and think the Bills will do well in time. really happy we got Payne, hopefully we target Ronald Jones or one of the best CBs/OL tonight. Guice has doubts about his knee, otherwise id love him"

"Just with a pick that high up you ideally want a giy whos going to be on your team for a decade not someone who you may not wsnt to oy in 4 years after he's run himself into the ground Also dont agree at all on the giants, they have great weapons now, but i dont think solder fixes that terrible O-line and also think Eli is done, Barkley may be a great pick but id of taken one of the QBs when you're that high up, feel like theyre almostt trying to make it up to Eli for the debacle of benching him for Geno Smith last year"

"I read a good article on the financials of the Barklay deal. On paper it didn't make sense but then I thought that with the ever-increasing risk of injury as you are in that position particularly, are you better off spending that money on a youngster than a proven one. Either may break down at any time but the odds are better on the younger one not doing so. Wouldn't always make sense but his talent is rare and may make it worthwhile. I look at their time and worry. They took the Eagles all the way last year. Wasn't much between them in the two games. With the weapons they have now, the Giants will threaten."

"Okay, I'm over the loss of Mayfield now (still can't believe the Brownies actually picked him at #1). Darnold is still a strong pick for the Jets. He's a blue-collar lad, and very no-frills in terms of his attitude. That will go down well with Todd Bowles, who will like his work ethic. Hasn't played as much college football as NFL coaches would have liked (red shirted his first year because of the quality of the USC roster). But has been really strong since. And he's still only 20 - so younger than the likes of Rosen etc. He also has a little bit of everything - and might be the best all-round QB in the draft. Doesn't have Mayfield's accuracy, but is still very accurate. Doesn't have Rosen's mechanics, but still passes smoothly. Doesn't have Allen's arm, but can still hit the long pass. He can do a bit of everything - and well. And he'll learn a lot from McCown, so he's in no hurry to start games straight away. Ideally, Mayfield would be joining Gang Green, but Darnold is still a fine fit for us. He certainly looks like a good quality, long-term NFL starter - and the Jets haven't had one of those behind centre since Pennington's shoulder burst. Asked what he was looking forward to in New York, he just said: 'Getting to work.' I like that. Giants got the best player in the draft - providing he stays free of injuries, Barkley could be one heck of a running back. Surprised that Rosen fell to #10 (Cards). He's a solid, all-round passer with top-class technique. Plus, Cowboys continuing to implode. I like it."

As a Giants fan. Jerry Jones is the gift that's keeps giving. Every season it's going to be the Cowboys year. And every year Jerry finds a way to shoot them in the foot. I will miss him when he's gone.

Good pick by the Browns. Ward is the best CB in the draft.

"Jets take Darnold at #3. This time last year, we'd have bitten your arm off for him. But somehow this feels ever-so-slightly underwhelming. He had just a ""decent"" last season in college. I had Mayfield and Rosen ahead of him. Still, he's out ginger Pele now..."

That sure is a head scratcher. But then again it is The Browns. At least the Giants picked the best player in Barkley.

"Fuck me - who'd be a Jets fan?! The Brownies stole our pick from under us. The Browns! We've spent months convincing everybody that Baker is our man, and the fecking Browns have u-turned on Darnold at the last minute. Mayfield is a strong pick. He should be a Jets player. I'm off to bed. Another ten years of shit awaits..!"

"late 70s, get your facts right, so years before we won anything. we haven't won anything for close to thirty years and it will probably be another thirty with the david sullivan of the nfl leading the club. you should calm down with your 'future greatest qb of all time' line as he hasnt even won a superbowl himself yet"

Future. Elway will be known primarily as a substandard GM by the time Wentz is finished. Basking in the glory after a lifetime of following losing teams is a novel feeling. If only I'd acclimatised with a bit of success of the Hammers along the way.

"""Okay...so we can assume Hermit's not a fan of Mayfield or Rosen, then!""ù A fair assessment. I think the Mayfield/Chargers situation would worry me because it tells you something about the character of the man you're signing and that's as important in an NFL QB as it is in any sportsman in the world. It suggests that he is a primadonna and entitled when in reality you need a QB who is going to get a big group of men to fight for him. He seems like a bit of child, and children don't lead men. In that regard he's the polar opposite of the man at the Chargers. If he had half an ounce of professionalism about him he would have been learning everything he could from Phillip Rivers and would have been grateful for the privilege of doing so. As for Rosen, he will have a similar problem. He's an entitled little rich boy and I don't think that a lot of his statements on working in Mac Donald's and having rich parents or not having to play the game will go down well with people who are putting their body on the line to make him look good."
