NFL (since 2016)

"Free agency started last night and was pretty crazy some huge money being spent. Osweiler getting £18m a year for the Texans, leaving the Broncos without a QB, Giants have spent a fortune on good but not great players, Oliver Vernon has more guaranteed money than JJ Watt. lots more deals but cant be bothered to list them all."

Terrel Davis got a gold jacket based on winning the Broncos those 2 superbowls because he had a relatively short career overall but got into Canton based on a few years of being absolutely exceptional.

"southbankbornnbred 3:56 Thu Oct 17 The two Super Bowls they won were down as much to Terrell Davis as much or more than Elway. If you want to talk about carrying a team look at his numbers in those playoffs. Elway is top 10 maybe 5 but not the GOAT, for me."

"Cough - two exceptional QBs, certainly. Unitas is the GOAT pick for many grizzled NFL hacks in the States. Broadway was one heck of a player for many years, too. Like Elway, he dragged poor Jets teams to victories they should never have had. Certainly the best in my time, in my view, has been Elway. He had absolutely everything. An almost perfect QB. Like the two above, of course, he also played in an era before the salary cap. In practice, that meant the Broncos were a relatively small-fry side when they went up against the big spenders of the period like Dallas, Washington and San Francisco. Those sides just signed talent with big dollars. Low-cost Denver had Elway dragging them through games. And he took them to four superbowls (two before the cap), winning two."

"I cannot think of a single team in history that Elway would not improve. That's why I've got him down as The Goat. Absolutely incredible ability under pressure to make the right call, make the right decision after the snap and make the right throws - in traffic and with chaos unfolding in front of him. He dragged the Broncos to their first two superbowls (in the 80s, which they lost) almost single-handedly. The Drive is still a thing of beauty. That throw he makes under pressure at 3rd and 18, having just been sacked, with almost no offensive line to speak of, and with just two minutes left in the game, is utterly unreal. 98 yards in four minutes, under constant pressure of being sacked, injured, with no great receivers, and in an AFC championship game: can think of only a few QBs in history who get their team over the line from there. He still picked Paxton Lynch and Osweiler, though. So he is human."

"Talking of scrambling, I know he hasn't been around for that long, but I saw a stat the other day that Goff had only scrambled for 188 yards in total in his career to date. Seems bloody low considering most of the young QB's nowadays are all over scrambling and running. That cսnt Kaepernick once done more yards than that in 1 game!"

Elway was a great scrambling QB but not as good as Fran Tarkenton for scrambling :-)

"Elway, for me, is the GOAT QB. Best I've ever seen under pressure and mostly while he was playing in poor-to-average sides. Put him in his prime, under Belichick, for the Patsies and they win the bloody thing even more regularly than under Brady. In my view. But he has made a shocking number of QB selections in his current role. Lynch was a disaster."

"Elway was very lucky that the texans outbid him for Osweiler, he may well have been out of a job already if he'd have been able to give big Brock the contract. He's actually had a shocking record at picking a QB since Manning retired which is odd when you think of what a talent he was. He burned a 1st round pick on Paxton Lynch and has used a high 2nd rounder on Drew Lock this year who is apparently nowhere close to being ready."

"I'm a Remoaner. But if you want to get Brexit over the line, bring in some NFL agents to negotiate for the UK. They'll have a deal within hours - we'll probably end up with Greece thrown in for good measure and a bit of summer sun. Tough ass negotiators and then some."

"Osweiler is a big example of it, but he wasn't the only QB to get a tankload of cash thrown at him after just a couple of decent performances. Anybody remember Flynn at Green Bay? Made a record-breaking appearance, against the Lions, in the absence of Rodgers - and became the hottest property in free agency the following season. The Seahawks threw what felt like a gabillion dollars at him - and a little-known rookie QB called Russell Wilson beat him to the starter job. The rest is Hawks' history."

"Absolutely atrocious QB and has almost as many interceptions as he does TD's. Still, he's the cսnt who's laughing as he's absolutely minted and can do whatever the fuck he now wants at the grand old age of 28 without ever worrying about work again!!"

"Five teams in six years of NFL football tells you everything you need to know about Osweiler. Hugely over-rated. That deal he got at the Texans was daylight robbery. Don't blame him, or his agent, one bit, though. They got what the desperate Texans were prepared to pay. The guy made his name - and $40m - off of a few half-decent starts as back up for a team that was strong enough to win a third Superbowl for a declining Peyton Manning. Only made the practice squad in Cleveland. Enough said. His agent should have been put in charge of Britain's Brexit negotiations with the EU!"

"He had one half decent run when supported by that Broncos defence that carried the corpse of Peyton Manning to a super bowl. Was enough to convince both the Broncos and texans that he was a franchise QB so a bidding war began meaning he ended up with a ridiculous contract. think him being 6""8 fooled alot of people into thinking he was a good choice."

Re the OP. Brock Osweiler has announced his retirement. By no means a great QB but he did get a Superbowl ring and 40-ish million in the bank. At the same time Nathan Peterman still has a job.

If a player wants to hold out because he wants a better contract that's up to him and i dont really have a problem with that as it can go both for and against him (Lev bell vs Melvin Gordon) But players like Antonio Brown & Ramsey who just make themselves a cancer to the locker room and fabricate reasons why they cant play while causing issues with the media in order to try and force a move shouldn't be rewarded for their actions.
