"Free agency started last night and was pretty crazy some huge money being spent. Osweiler getting £18m a year for the Texans, leaving the Broncos without a QB, Giants have spent a fortune on good but not great players, Oliver Vernon has more guaranteed money than JJ Watt. lots more deals but cant be bothered to list them all."

"I mean fuck the seahwaks, but that's never a flag. QB's are more protected than goalkeepers. If you want to run, then you should be able to hit them like you would a RB and it wasn't his helmet."

"another problem is where we're drafting, they won't be interested in picks that high, so teams like miami or the jets are in position to deal for him if interested and have the cap room"

"yes zeb, loads of cap space and just brandon scherrff to pay at the end of the season, who's currently on a franchise tag. one problem is now much the texans would want for him, probably two first round picks/a second round pick and maybe one of the better players like one of our defensive linemen (allen, payne or settle). they may want more than that so it may be a case where they'll get him to stay because of the demands they want"

"Jets have interviewed Eric Bieniemy (OC) from Kansas City for their head coach position. They've also interviewed Marv Lewis (formerly of the Bengals) and plan to speak to at least three other candidates. I'd take Bieniemy. He's a risk, because he's never been a head coach and nobody really knows to what extent the brilliant Andy Reid still runs the Chief's offense in practice. But I think Bieniemy is worth a punt considering the position we are in. He has served under Reid - one of the best - for a long time and he wants the role. Lewis did well in Cincinnati, considering they are no great shakes as a franchise. He spent 16 years there and still emerged with more wins than losses, which is no mean feat. But he's more of a defensive specialist and we need an offensive mind, in my view (Darnold, Mims, Herndon, Becton etc are all talented but need a good offensive HC to give them direction)."

"TM - I know exactly what you mean about Darnold. I think the guy still has talent, and he entered the NFL a year earlier than most QBs. Gase tried his level best to waste the talent and time Darnold had, but I watch him all of the time and he's got good fundamentals. His problem is his reads/check-downs, and they are coachable. If his primary receiver is covered, he takes too long to adjust. But a good QB/OC coach can improve that - it was also Brady's problem entering his draft, for example. Darnold has good throwing mechanics/technique, a decent arm and OK accuracy (which can also be coached to improve). And he moves well in the pocket when we can actually make a pocket for him! He's also built a decent relationship with an excellent young receiver in Mims. I'd be tempted to back him fully for 2021, to boost his confidence, pick up a half-decent veteran in free agency (Rivers? Trubisky?) as a back/up, and trade our second first-round pick to a needy franchise. That way, we'll have two first-rounders up our sleeve in 2022 if Darnold bombs under a new head coach. We've got multiple second and third round picks anyway, due to the Adams deal. Then we could use the #2 pick to grab (OL) Sewell or (WR) Smith. Sewell plays in a dull/boring position for most fans - but good lineman (especially) tackles are worth their weight in gold because they give quarterbacks time. The Jets' roster is absolutely dire and we have big needs everywhere - so there won't be a miraculous single-year turnaround to a play-off team. It'll take time to build a decent side from here. So the new coach should back Darnold, improve the wider team through the draft, and take his time. The alternative that could tempt them out of that is probably Wilson."

"didn't Tua do the clap thing on every snap? I'm sure he did when at Alabama. yes, there are a few decent college QBs in the second/third round. I like Trey Lance most outside the big three names, Trask may be a bit too static/immobile for the pro game but has a great arm, I like Ehlinger & Mac Jones too. I also had a look at Darnold on that QB School channel & he moves much better than I realised. I wouldn't turn down giving him a chance of the Jets went down a different route"

"SB, watching more stuff tonight. apparently the falcons are trying to punt out Matt Ryan & Julio Jones, but the massive problem being Ryan's contract and very few teams willing to pay the remaining guaranteed money (no idea what Jones deal is like?). also, I'd forgotten that the Texans had traded away their first round pick and again, apparently Deshaun Watson is unhappy in Texas and may want out. he's the QB (Stafford second choice) I'd love to trade for but it will cost as he's only a year in to a five year contract"

"And I definitely wouldn't touch Newton. Excellent player a few years ago. But too injury prone these days and not a reliable enough drop back-and-throw type. As Belichick discovered (in fairness, he probably knew). Rumour has it that the Patsies are circling Darnold in the event that the Jets take a QB. That sounds very Belichick."

"TM - unless you're spending picks to come up the draft for Wilson, I'd be tempted to wait until further down rather then overspend to trade for Miami's #3. Got a feeling Miami will have to back Tua for next season, so they might opt instead to take a lineman or pass-rusher. Lawrence will go at #1 to the Jags. The Jets' #2 pick will be either Sewell, Smith or Fields/Wilson (Sewell is probably the best player there: he's a nailed-on NFL starter). Miami probably have to back Tua and may not take a QB at #3. So you might find that Fields and possibly Wilson are still on the board after 1,2,3. in those circumstances, I wouldn't spend multiple first round picks to nab Miami's place. Especially as there is a QB with some promise who will probably still be on the board further down: Ehrlinger. He looks a bigger risk than some of the others, but he's generally played well this season, has good fundamental technical skills and a strong arm. My only immediate concern about him is the weird 'clap' he performs before snaps. It makes you wonder what his communication skills are like - coaches will frown on it in the NFL. But maybe that's on his centre at university."

"heard a worrying rumour earlier in Pat Mcafee's show from a journalist linking Cam Newton to us, and a two year deal. maybe the journalist was given the bait/story from an agent but i hope Rivera stays away. I'm not a Newton hater but I just think he's not what we need at the moment. i'm not against a scrambling QB but it has to be someone with a better arm than Newton, and I also worry about the number of injuries he's had"

"The QB free agency roundabout will be fun. The Eagles pbviously wan't to get shot of Wentz but I cannot see anyone picking up the tab. Cam Newton and Philip Rivers look done. Both Matt Stafford and Matt Ryan would be perfect for Patriots and Fitzmagic will be up for another year somewhere. The Cowboy must give Dak Prescott a new contract and what of Darnold, Trubisky and Garropolo? Dew Brees will carry on yet again but is Taysom Hll really the answer thereafter? As a 'Fin fan Tua has been a bit of a disappointment - maybe his receiving weapons at college flattered him or he will have Josh Allen like turnaround. That is even before Trevor Lawrence."
