NFL (since 2016)
"Free agency started last night and was pretty crazy some huge money being spent. Osweiler getting £18m a year for the Texans, leaving the Broncos without a QB, Giants have spent a fortune on good but not great players, Oliver Vernon has more guaranteed money than JJ Watt. lots more deals but cant be bothered to list them all."

Re: NFL (since 2016)
Oh yes. We're no longer the outright shittest team in the NFL. Now just one of the shittest. It starts here. The run to the Super Bowl (in 2079) starts here. Believe it.

"impressive win that, we play them next. defend like we did today and it'll be hard to win, it's tough having to score 30 every week"

"Takashi Miike 4:46 Haven't read that- will have to track it down. He was something alright. Both personally and professionally! If you can get hold of it, then 'No Medals for Trying: A week in the life of a football team' is a brilliant read. (Is based on the Giants though) It's exactly as it says. Reporting on the staff and team recovering from one game and preparing for the next in close detail. https://www.amazon.co.uk/No-Medals-Trying-Week-Football/dp/0025582151"

Re: NFL (since 2016)
"RBshorty 3:52 True- it is mad when you look at it over the whole history of a franchise. The 49ers have for the most part been terrible, and the Cowboys at times too. It's a bit like how people of our generation (still somehow) see Forest as a big side in the doldrums somewhat, when history shows they have been a top flight side for less than half their existence. However, some teams while not winning championships do tend to be a lot more 'there or thereabouts' or competitive a lot of the time and with us at least aside from the 80s and Eli's early years it's been pretty slim pickings. It is funny how the division is usually either really strong or utter shit, all at the same time though. Bit reminiscent of the West in the past decade or so. But yes the drafting. The drafting..... FMOB. Failure after failure even with a lot of high picks for the last decade more or less."

Re: NFL (since 2016)
El Scorchio 2:50 All the great teams down the years have done it over a small period of time.(With the exception of the Steeler's. Who work on a sound philosophy of. Defence first. Everything else second.) And the New York thing is simple. It doesn't matter how crap you are. You be ok as long as the other guy is worse. And the NFC east has always been a competitive division. Either all the teams are good or piss poor. Compared to the rest of the league. It's been very very rare when one team has lorded it over the others. Unlike the poor Jets. But I'm with on the drafting. You hit the nail on the head. It's been abject.

"But you are right- it's still four super bowls, which is more than all but four other teams, so very spoiled in that respect."

Re: NFL (since 2016)
"Thing is, all the Giants' Super Bowl wins came in two short periods of time which really flatters to deceive. They've been mostly awful outside of those periods. The first two was when the league had to step in and appoint George Young as GM because the Maras were feuding. He was responsible for all the success in the 80s including hiring Parcells. The Maras also turned down Belichick for HC as well. The second period was two great runs but never really a dominant team, aside from 2009 until Burress literally shot himself in the foot. But they did draft well for a few seasons and had a QB who was much better than all the talking heads would have you believe. However, those teams were also flawed and just got hot at the right time and turned in some great one off performances. There's no real excuse for not having prolonged success like some of the other franchises, given all the benefits of being in NY with a huge draw and a huge affluent fan base (and that goes tor both Blue and Green teams) It all stems from poor owners in both cases. They constantly make poor hires from the top down. In the Jets case, they compound it by trying to start anew year after year, and in the Giants case they compound it by basically doing the opposite and sticking with ideas that aren't working. What both teams have in common is they both draft abysmally."

"But you're right, Scorch, the potential market in NYC is enormous beyond belief - and the city currently has two franchises wasting every ounce of that potential. It borders on criminal."

"Don't get me wrong - the Giants are, and always will be, the naff half of NYC as far as I see it! But most franchises would bite your arm off for their four superbowls and play-off record."

"The Giants don't have decent owners. More a clueless albeit well meaning family. They just don't stick out because they are quiet and 'pleasant'. Just like the Jets, the continued underperformance barring a few time periods in such a huge and lucrative market is woeful."

Re: NFL (since 2016)
"Read a decent piece in the NYP, bizarrely, which warned that the two New York sides are now both so bad, that they risk alienating younger American football fans in the city - who have started to grow up supporting other sides! This was a genuine problem for both New York sides throughout the 1970s. They were so utterly shit then, until the Sack Exchange and Parcells' Giants became competitive, that many young American football fans in the country's biggest city grew up following teams like Pittsburgh, Dallas and even Buffalo. It was a situation exacerbated by TV, because there was an NFL blackout while they tried to get fans into stadiums. What games you did see on TV were highlights - and they were dominated by Pittsburgh, Dallas etc because the Jets and Giants were so shite. So some fans grew up barely knowing about the two New York sides' players etc. Bit fickle of some locals, if you ask me. But that's America for you. But it gave birth to the hardcore nature of the Jets fans who remained (the lot I bumped into on an early visit there, hence my choice) - and still remain to this day. Nonetheless, this is a risk for both sides now. I just want the Johnson & Johnson lot to sell up and get the fuck out. As RBShorty said, the Giants have decent owners. We don't. They are America's version of GSB."

Re: NFL (since 2016)
I wouldn't worry Miike. Most Cowgirls fans are already outside getting the Tika-Tape parade ready. They give Scouse and Spurs fans a run for the money when it comes to entitlement and delusion.

Re: NFL (since 2016)
Jimmy G will improve a team. Not sure if a team will ever win the big one with him as a starting QB though.
