NFL (since 2016)
"Free agency started last night and was pretty crazy some huge money being spent. Osweiler getting £18m a year for the Texans, leaving the Broncos without a QB, Giants have spent a fortune on good but not great players, Oliver Vernon has more guaranteed money than JJ Watt. lots more deals but cant be bothered to list them all."

Re: NFL (since 2016)
"Not a chance in hell! Besides, our owners have already confirmed that Saleh (HC) and Douglas (GM) are coming back for next season. I'm quite pleased they're retaining Saleh. His defense was very good. But I hope they get rid of the OC Hackett - he has been a disaster, even if he helped smooth the Rodgers deal."

Re: NFL (since 2016)
"Realistically, even though he is in decline (record-wise), I think most owners would sprint towards Belichick to get him to their franchise if he expressed an interest. For that reason, I wouldn't read too much into what owners say. For once, the main exception will be the Jets - and that's not because the Johnsons are reliable and fine, upstanding owners (quite the opposite). We just have shitshow-level form with BB and the fans would go genuinely apeshit. It would be like Ince, Lampard Jnr and Defoe returning to West Ham as part of the same deal."

"our owner has said he wants to move away from the coach-centric situation we had with rivera, where he was pretty much reporting to no one. belichik is just more of the same, but far more controlling. johnson (lions) and the texans oc are more what harris is looking for. none of this matters though until the GM is hired, peters heads that list"

Re: NFL (since 2016)
"Wouldn't put it past Belichick to take a job at a play-off team that decides to part ways with its coach over the next couple of weeks - not least because he will inherit a half-decent team that already gives him a strong starting point. But. He is a very particular, fastidious and powerful HC and he will want a lot of say over not just how the team is run (that's the HC's job anyway), but also the wider franchise. He's been the GM in all but name in New England for a while. That will most likely rule out a move to somewhere like Seattle, where Pete Carroll (72 years-old) wants to stay on as an adviser (to a 71-year-old and more successful HC?!). Of the franchises with current vacancies, there are three that strike me as suitable for Belichick if he decides to carry on (which now sounds likely): Washington, Tennessee and, bizarre though it sounds, the LA Chargers. The first two are obvious. Washington is perfect for a total rebuild and Belichick would get any role he wants beyond the HC (effectively becoming the GM if he wanted). He'd also get the #2 draft pick. Likewise, Tennessee - where he'd get the #7 pick in the draft and an opportunity to take a high-grade QB. But even though it is across the country, the LA Chargers offers perhaps the best option of current vacancies for any incoming coach - because they have a top-level franchise QB already in place in Justin Herbert. And he fits BB's model. That's ""the"" key consideration sorted - and it would allow BB to focus on his defensive solidity in the draft. Realistically, I couldn't see BB upping sticks and going out west. But beyond geography, the Chargers job is a no-brainer for a proven coach coming in to a franchise that has a QB who can already move the ball. Long way to go yet, though. Some of the fancied play-off teams might yet sack their coaches when they lose."

Re: NFL (since 2016)
"I make it seven other HC vacancies already available, even before the play-offs are done: Seahawks, Commanders, Panthers, Falcons, Chargers, Titans and Raiders. Is that right? A few other sides could part ways with their HC and are rumoured to be considering it. Could see a ""big"" name team with an egotistical owner pulling the trigger on a half-decent coach if they want the kudos of Belichick's reputation. So that does put Dallas in the mix, although Belichick isn't a fan and they'd have to pay him an absolute fortune. The one franchise you can 100% rule out is the Jets: our fans would rather gouge their eyes out with a hot poker, and eat their own flesh, than go begging to that cսnt again, regardless of his record. And I suspect the feeling is mutual. So safe to say it's one of 30 teams!"

Re: NFL (since 2016)
"So, Belichick has officially gone from the Patriots after a five-minute speech at a press conference alongside owner Robert Kraft. You couldn't get that speech onto a napkin, though, Bill. Superb coach, albeit a controversial and quite miserable one. BUT Rob Kraft gave the game away when he wished him every success in his cut-off hoodie ""except when he's playing the Patriots"". So expect a rush to appoint him. Sounds like he's carrying on..."

"Far Cough 4:59 Thu Jan 11 Not a chance he'd up sticks and move that far west. Much more likely he'll go to the other Washington And besides, I don't think our moving in a new direction involves replacing a 72 year old with a 71 year old"

Re: NFL (since 2016)
"RB - yeah, but he's 14 games behind Shula's win record, which most likely means at least another two seasons in a head coaching hot seat. He might go for it. But he'd be in his 74th year at the point when he realistically had a shot at beating Shula's record (unless he went 15-2 with a brand new team next season). It seems like a lot of work still for a guy who would have to start again somewhere new."

Re: NFL (since 2016)
"He should retire, in all seriousness. He has absolutely nothing to prove and everything to lose now. I know people stay in the game for the love of the game, but Bill doesn't strike me as the sort of happy-go-lucky fella who just loves to be around the place... We'll find out soon enough. He's holding a press conference in 20 minutes..."

Re: NFL (since 2016)
"I like to think the Jets taught Belichick everything he knew in the few hours he was our head coach: 3-4 Base defense, how to read the 46 Bear, use of napkins...that kind of thing...he basically owes it all to us."
Re: NFL (since 2016)
"All in there 70's now. With this year draft supposed to be QB rich in quality. The head coach. QB relationship has never been so important for GM,s and owners. Sure all 3 will get offers if they want to continue. But the age will factor into a lot of teams decision."

Re: NFL (since 2016)
"Darnold is OK - certainly a good backup QB. He got weighed down by the #3 overall pick tag in New York and, because he was chosen so high, the club felt obliged to start him from day one. But, like most QBs coming out of college, he clearly wasn't ready. He never learnt how to protect the football - and kept trying to make throws he could never complete. So he never had a period of just sitting and learning behind an established veteran QB. Which is how things used to get done. There's no doubt that use to make the transition easier. Now, almost all big money, high-pick QBs are thrown straight into the starter's role - with no experience of professional football - and people wonder why they're not immediately some sort of saviour for their franchise. Darnold's early injuries also didn't help, neither did the fact that he clearly hated playing in cold weather. He's a sunshine, west coast QB (college was USC etc). He'll be a decent backup for you. He has talent."
