Re: New Champions League nonsense
I'd HATE it if we were in it in it's current form.
It's lost all it's mystique, kudos, integrity, prestige and glamour. That's quite an achievement.
Well done the money men.

Re: New Champions League nonsense
Teams who are guaranteed to finish in the top eight will play their academy players in the last couple of games in the group stage. Teams with no hope of qualifying will give up the ghost.
If they wanted to change it up, they could have kept 8 groups of four teams, but with the winners going through and the second place teams playing a home playoff against a third place team from another group. No one going into the Europa is the only positive

Seems like some are quite prepared to kill the goose so long as they get all the golden eggs it lays before it dies.

Re: New Champions League nonsense
Read an article on how countries with one club in the competition end up winning their league year after year. They make so much more money and keep getting stronger that it’s ruining the local leagues.

Should never have done away with:
-European Cup
-UEFA Cup
-Cup Winners Cup
......but MONEY, it's only about MONEY
Well that's life and modern society for you.
Villa are charging their supporters £100 to watch their home Champions League games.
Elite football is indeed mainly about money and has been for decades.

Re: New Champions League nonsense
No more dropping down into the Europa is a positive
Understand the 36 team league table sees the top 8 into playoffs with the next 16 playing a one off to reduce to 8 & create a final 16
The other 12 no marks get hammered & play a bunch of dead rubbers
Suspect the usual suspects will be ENSCONCED in the top 8 early on & there will be several pointless games generating money

Re: New Champions League nonsense
I don't see how it will be any worse than before, the group stages in this comp have always been shit. It's two more games, suppose some will think that's good, some not. And as said, no more drop downs.

Re: New Champions League nonsense
Watched Villa and they should have had 5.
How we argued about a few million for Duran and end up getting Fullkrug and now Ings will get minutes and never score again, ever.
Real Madrid being outplayed by Stuttgart.
Are they always this lucky and is Mbappe the most overated player currently in Europe, I mean he's good but failed at PSG and done nothing with France for years.

Re: New Champions League nonsense
Watched some of it on Prime. HT panel meeting the new quota. Two men of colour, a woman and a simpleton white bloke, i.e. FLJ.
Then after an ad break it came back on with two other womèn discussing the same game.
Hard to get too enthusiastic about the football. Its money games and will only become anyway interesting for a nuetral at knock out stages.

Come On You Irons" wrote: ↑17 Sep 2024, 21:29 The new format is indeed nonsense. How can you have a 'single league' of 36 teams and each team only plays 8 games against 8/35 opponents? Madness.
The only good thing about this new format is that Champions League losers no longer drop down into the Europa League. That was always farcical and unfair.
I just saw it is also 3 nights a week! It is a bit bizarre, like some kid saying, if we can't have a proper European League we'll have a 1/5 of a league and you can stuff that.

Never mind all that nonsense - U21s are away at Newport in the EFL Trophy. 0-0 at half time.
