I would argue it was for self determination and sovereignty...which in the long term are good ideals and principles.

That doesn't mean it's not been a shambles, or that lots would change their mind in the aftermath, but taking away someone else's hold over you, even if the 'perks' that kept you under their control seem attractive, and enabling you to set your own path unencumbered have to be long term desirable. 

In some ways (although I'm nervous saying it) it's a bit like countries formerly part of the British Empire choosing to break away and reclaim their own sovereignty. In the short to medium term, they have had issues with the loss of established governance and perks of 'membership', but in the longer term it removes constraints and let's them chart their own path, as well as that principle of freedom.

Just my thoughts on the 'why' anyway.

Brexit was never going to solve illegal immigration.  By definition that was already immigration we had legal control over and Brexit didn't add anything too (other than making some previously legal migration, now illegal based on country of origin). 

It was also never going to put a stop on legal migration, since we already had legal power over non-European legal migration, and were choosing to do next to nothing to stem it.

So technically we now have additinal control over previusly legal, European migration, and some of this would now be deemed 'illegal' migration. Brexit has delivered that.  

The 'con' is that no one in power (those that 'serve' us) has any real appetite to do anything about it.  It's all soundbites to play to the crowd, and lets people think everyone is on the same page about slowing the influx, but the reality is the powers that have been available for long before Brexit were not being exercised, so why would new powers to control legal influx from an additional area of the world be used any more effectively?

We have got back control of the borders but the massive government clusterfuck AFTER Brexit in implementing that control, and therefore not actually a symptom of Brexit itself, is why we are now where we are.

However, remainers still seem to cling to the mistaken belief that Brexit, and not the follow-on  government incompetence is the sole cause of illegal immigration.

I strongly suspect that the number of illegals arriving in the UK is about the same as it was before Brexit, but now there are border checks & inspections, many of those illegals are now forced to take the more scenic, photogenic route over, rather than arrive, undetected, in and on freight transport.

Oxbore and yes the while reason why I voted against Brexit. One thing is having an idea but implementing it is another. I'd like to have a threesome with Megan Fox and Margot Robbie. As to how I can implement this situation is another thing. That's why the Scots rejects Independence. Nice idea but no logistics.
