West Ham United's Potential Plan for Carlos Soler
Carlos Soler, now on loan from Paris Saint-Germain to West Ham United, likely recognized he needed a fresh start this summer to secure more consistent playing time. Watching Spain capture the UEFA Euro 2024 title may have fueled his desire to get back on La Roja’s radar.
During the summer transfer window, several clubs showed interest in Soler, but it was West Ham that secured his loan move on the final day. So far, the 27-year-old midfielder has made six appearances for a West Ham side struggling in 15th place in the Premier League.
In an interview with MARCA, Soler shared that while PSG manager Luis Enrique never explicitly told him he wasn’t in the plans, he sensed that a change was needed.
“If I wanted to leave? Yes, that’s the truth,” Soler told the Spanish media outlet. “I never received any news from the club or the coach to tell me that they wanted me to leave. But I knew that last season had been complicated because of my playing time, and I am at the right age in terms of maturity to enjoy football. I wanted a new challenge, to leave and play in the Premier League.”
“I insist. At no time did Luis (Enrique) tell me that I was going to play little or that he wasn’t counting on me. But I’m smart enough to know the level at PSG, and I knew it would be difficult to get playing time.”
West Ham United clear up Carlos Soler’s loan situation
When it comes to Soler, a £27 million clause allows West Ham to make the loan permanent; it is solely an option that the Hammers’ board can choose to trigger.
However, Claret and Hugh reported on Tuesday that the Premier League side have no obligation clause and it’s just a loan. A top official at London Stadium confirmed, “Soler is just here on loan with absolutely no obligation for us to buy.”
With his high wages and the significant fee required by Paris Saint-Germain, any deal over £1 million would need board approval, making a permanent move unlikely.
