​​​​​​Martin Allen did an interview fairly recently mentioning Joey and how he car shared with him.
He made it quite clear that he , like all of us back then  had no idea about GENUINE mental health issues in grown men.
 as it turned out..Joey Beauchamp was a tortured soul and took his own life in the most grim way .

It's a tough subject and even tougher to distinguish between proper  lads in trouble and those actual wet blankets and mummy's boys just looking for  attention .

Agreed with this - not as easy to resolve as just saying toughen up / man up. Plenty of people out there who feel sorry for themselves who don't have any mental health issues at all. As you say, Monsieur, there are lots with very real deep issues and they are often are quieter and less willing to talk about it.

Not sure how I feel about that article. 'Football and society failed him'. I don't see that. He failed himself. If he really never had the gumption to play at the very top level then walk away. And what about his family? They knew how much it upset him to move away from Oxford and knew about his gambling. What did they do?

I remember at the time Billy Bonds couldn't get his nut around Joey Beauchamp and his very short career at WHU...
We all felt the same at the time...I certainly did.

I remember the days when a local boy just wanting to play for his club and not move to bigger teams was looked on as loyal and a good thing. Wasn't Joey's fault that Oxford wanted to sell him or us buy him. Personally I'd be pretty miserable if I was forced to take a job I didn't want, in a part of the country I didn't want to be in, too. Both Oxford and West Ham not listening to the guy and measuring him up were to blame for that fiasco.

I see there's a "foundation" so either a grift or more likely, as they're blaming everyone else but themselves, a manifestation of their own guilt.

Either way he was given a golden career opportunity and pissed it away because he he couldn't leave Oxford, some Doris and his Mum. Gambled his money away and took the easy way out punishing those he left behind.

I've heard more tragic stories this week.

He had his demons and ultimately hung himself because of his deep depression. Little to do with being a wet blanket mummies boy. Just a sad story but at least he had a decent career with his beloved Oxford United.

You can call it mental health issues but think in cases like him it was more mental strength & resilience
He was a bit of a mummy’s boy who was happy playing for his local club & didn’t have the desire to make sacrifices to come out of his comfort zone & progress
Youd hope these days you’d do more due diligence on character & personality before investing

Wasn't he diagnosed with autism or asperges fairly late on in life? I'm not saying that's an excuse but it could be a factor. Anyway,  a shame we didn't get to see him play as he was very talented player by all accounts.
