Guardian Rumour mill

Manchester City may have already spent in excess of £120m this month but they haven’t finished yet, with Andrea Cambiaso of Juventus a potential full-back recruit and Atalanta’s Éderson, rated at £70m, among the midfielders they have their eye on. The Mill knows what you’re thinking, but beyond the one at Atalanta and the one already at City there are no other Edersons playing top-flight football anywhere, so sadly the dream of a team full of them is destined never to be realised.

If City fail to land Éderson No2 they might sign their former player Douglas Luiz from Juventus, which is handy given that they already have the Italian side on speed dial, though like Chelsea they would ideally take him on loan and Juve are interested only in a sale. Talking of Juve and sales, the Italian side have valued defender Cambiaso, who turns 25 next month, at €80m and so will dismiss the €65m bid they are expecting to receive from Manchester.

Borussia Dortmund’s left-back recruitment department have taken an unusual approach to their jobs this month. Out of a potential talent pool of thousands of players spread across the entire world, they have spread their net near and narrow, settling on two targets who play in the same city, in stadiums a mere seven miles apart. The Sun says they want Ben Chilwell, who has been told to clear off by Chelsea, and the Telegraph that Arsenal’s Oleksandr Zinchenko is in fact their top target. The Bundesliga side have cooled on Marcus Rashford, having fled in terror at the first mention of the forward’s £350,000-a-week salary demands, leaving the 27-year-old apparently suitorless with a week of the window remaining.

After failing with a €55m bonuses included offer – United want €65m, and without bonuses – Napoli have turned their attentions from Alejandro Garnacho to Borussia Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi. That means Chelsea would be the United winger’s sole remaining suitors, with the Telegraph reporting they are “getting ready to formalise their interest with an offer”. But they warn that United “are ready to play hardball” over their £50m-rated 20-year-old and (though this seems obvious to the Mill) “will not consider offers involving players they do not want moving in the opposite direction”. Adeyemi turned Napoli down earlier this month, but after Borussia binned off their coach, Nuri Sahin, on Tuesday night, is reconsidering his options. The Neapolitans may yet reconsider theirs and up their offer for Garnacho, having already agreed the outlines of a contract with the Argentinian.

In further winger news, Southampton are already preparing for life without the sought-after youth-team graduate Tyler Dibling and have identified the Cardiff wide man Ollie Tanner as their prime target. They might get him for a mere £3m, but they will have to pip rival suitors Leicester, Leeds and Burnley to get there.

Back, then, to Chelsea, who have apparently identified Hellas Verona’s Reda Belahyane as a replacement for Cesare Casadei, who is on his way back to his native Italy to sign for either Torino or Lazio. Tempting as it is to wonder why a player without a single league minute to his name this season, and a total of 71 minutes spread across 11 substitute appearances last season, needs to be replaced at all, a €15m deal for the 20-year-old French-born midfielder, who made his full international debut for Morocco in October, is apparently being hatched.

West Ham negotiating to sign RB Leipzig striker Andre Silva on loan deal

Image

By Roshane Thomas

West Ham United are in negotiations with RB Leipzig to sign Andre Silva on a loan deal with an option to buy.

The Portugal international striker has found himself down the pecking order at RB Leipzig and has not started a Bundesliga match this campaign.

The 29-year-old spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Real Sociedad, where he scored four goals in 26 appearances, and has previously played for Porto, Milan, Sevilla and Eintracht Frankfurt.

West Ham are currently without a fit recognised striker in the squad with Niclas Fullkrug currently sidelined for “a number of weeks” with a hamstring injury.

Captain Jarrod Bowen remains out after fracturing his foot in December, while Michail Antonio — the club’s all-time top goalscorer in the Premier League — faces an extended period on the sidelines after breaking his leg in a car crash last month.

Silva has 19 goals in 53 caps for Portugal, but he has not featured for his national side in the summer of 2022.

West Ham, 14th in the table, return to Premier League action with a trip to Aston Villa on Sunday.

Silva looking for fresh start

Analysis by German football correspondent Sebastian Stafford-Bloor

Silva has been out of place at RB Leipzig for some time. He moved to the club off the back of a prolific Eintracht Frankfurt season in 2021 (28 goals in 32 Bundesliga starts) but, through a mixture of bad luck, injury, coaching changes and stylistic issues, has never really been able to establish himself properly.

In the present day, having spent last season out on loan at Real Sociedad, he is well-behind the first-choice duo of Lois Openda and Benjamin Sesko. He’s more of a penalty box player. A target for attacking passes into the penalty box, rather than the breaking, dynamic forward that has become Leipzig’s template.

No surprise, then, that he is open to kickstarting his career elsewhere.
Potter may help Silva re-find form

Analysis from West Ham correspondent Roshane Thomas

Silva has struggled with game time this season but West Ham head coach Graham Potter of a knack of helping forwards rediscover their confidence.

Brighton & Hove Albion striker Danny Welbeck had a career resurgence under Potter. Neal Maupay, the former Brentford forward, also established himself as a Premier League player under Potter. Silva’s arrival at the London Stadium would help get his career back on track.

Figure Ajax Want From West Ham In Brian Brobbey Deal Identified

Dutch giants Ajax are demanding a fee in the region of €35m from West Ham United to sanction a loan move with an obligation for Brian Brobbey.

West Ham have stepped up their search for centre forward and Andre Silva and Brobbey are on top of their list.

The Hammers have been in touch with Brobbey’s entourage regarding a possible deal in the winter window.

Brobbey has featured 29 times for Ajax in all competitions this season and has scored only three times.

West Ham have submitted an offer to take him on loan for the rest of the season with an obligation to buy in the summer.
According to Dutch daily De Telegraaf, Ajax have demanded a hefty fee of €30m with €5m in bonuses.

The Eredivisie outfit also want the clauses for the bonuses to be easily achievable for the 22-year-old forward.
Now it remains to be seen whether West Ham will agree to Ajax’s demands to facilitate a move for the centre forward.

West Ham 'agree' deal to sign striker who rejected Man Utd as 'medical booked'

West Ham are said to have struck a deal to land a new frontman this month.

West Ham are said to have made a breakthrough, striking an agreement to sign a highly-rated striker. The Hammers have been left short up top following the injury suffered by Niclas Fullkrug.

The Hammers are stuck in the bottom half after a hugely disappointing start to the season, and Graham Potter will need tome new signings if he is to turn things around quickly.

Hinting at defensive recruitment, in particular, he said recently: “We’ve got a few challenges to fix, but that’s normally why you end up at a football club in January: because there’s things to do. We’ve got some options there internally. And then, of course, we’re always looking for options to help the team.

“JC [Todibo] is going to be a while before he comes back, so there’s no immediate solution there. It’s a calf strain and lower-limb issue. He’s going to be a bit of time yet. We have to look for what we have.”

Though, it seems attacking signings will take priority after the loss of Fullkrug, and one appears to be on its way. According to The Boot Room, the Hammers have agreed a deal to sign Ajax talent Brian Brobbey on loan for the rest of the season. The 22-year-old has scored an impressive 32 goals in 79 league games for the Dutch giants, and he is already a seven-time Netherlands senior international.

He has only started nine league games this season, though, and he will now be allowed to join the Hammers on loan, according to the report, with a medical booked within the next 48 hours. It’s reported that a deal was struck some time on Thursday night, and it will no doubt include a significant loan fee given Ajax will be losing a player who is used frequently.

Brobbey on rejecting Man Utd

Brobbey once rejected the chance rejected the chance to join Manchester United, revealing to Voetbal International: "I absolutely wanted to go to Ajax. Erik (ten Hag) also wanted to work with me, texted once if I was open to it, but I thanked him nicely. I wanted to go back. My friends here, Ajax's playing style, it just wasn't finished yet.

"I first have to really succeed here as a striker of Ajax. That's also how the past six months felt, when I played here on a rental basis. I really had the feeling afterwards: I really have to go back. Believe me, in a few years I will provide a nice transfer fee for Ajax and then the club will have made a nice profit. There are more good players who play striker: Dusan Tadic, Steven Bergwijn, Davy Klaassen, Lorenzo Lucca. At the moment I am a basic player, but I just have to perform, with good play and goals. Then the trainer can't ignore me and I start in the team."
