He’s going to well into his 70s by the time he’s got “his” team sorted.

no cough, I don't think just he was ever any part of the patriots owner group. he just understood how more competitive the team would be, no doubt the bonuses for play-off wins and superbowls got him a lot of that money back. was listening to a couple of ex players this week talking about how the whole staff of these franchises get paid when they make the post season, even the equipment staff get a bonus

I think Brady wants someone to set a solid foundation, they apparently (like us last close season) have the opportunity to bring in something like thirty free agents, so it's pretty much a clean slate and they want someone reliable in charge

He is certainly reliable. A good coach, knows his way around the league.

Yep - got a feeling that not appointing Newmark will be a mistake. He seemed a great fit for Aaron Glenn.

Bet Woody thought he was too much his own man. He seems to choose GM’s he can easily over-rule, like Douglas.

Hmm…not entirely sure about Darren Mougey as Jets’ new GM.

Don’t know a huge amount about him, to be honest, but it all feels like a Woody “yes man”. Very young, too, so lacks the grey hairs you often need in that role.

Has a proper scouting background, which is a plus. But how independent of the owner will he be?

Would have preferred Newmark’s experience to go alongside a first-time new HC. Have to wait and see.

Looks like Rob Saleh is going back to the 49ers for a second stint as DC.

If so, that’s a good move for him and the 49ers. He’s an excellent DC. The head coaching move just came too soon for him - he was very poor on offense.

He should ask to act as an effective assistant HC and attend some of the offensive meetings, while being hands-on as a DC. Because he needs to understand how to move the chains.

Good luck to him: a decent man who got promoted a little too soon.

True! Both the Jets and Giants charge plenty for seats. In 2023, the Jets came in $8 below the NFL average price ($120), while the Giants came in $6 above it.

Not sure anybody, but the owners, are getting value for money there! I should have been paid to watch Rob Saleh and Rex Ryan's offenses!

Raiders ($169) and 49ers ($161) charging silly money for tickets, milking the tourists.

Could go either way. He’s a thoroughly decent man, and the fans love him after his Pro Bowl standard as a player in New York. He will throw himself into the job and it’ll be great to have a passionate Jet on the sidelines. I don’t mind “shit or bust” (Rex was like that early on), it’s the tepid coaches on the carousel I can’t abide.

But his Detroit defense was not an elite unit (it was good, though). So he’ll need to appoint high quality co-ordinators.

The GM hire could make or break the coaching situation. Newmark would make sense, TM: knows Glenn already and has a lot of experience.

And then they have to convince the Johnsons to back off team affairs.

It’ll all come down to the coaching details, of course. But I like Aaron Glenn’s mindset on defense.

Basically does not accept any player who isn’t showing maximum effort on the three key phases of any defensive play: initial burst, speed and finish. “If you’re not showing on those three, you’re a traitor and you can go play for someone else.”

Secondly, he openly wants to bring “violence” (his word) back to the NFL. Within the rules, but he wants players in opponents’ faces.

Third, he says he wants to attack the ball to get it back. Less containment. Go after the QB and the ball.

It sounds pretty Rex (Buddy) Ryan: which is probably why Rex, eight years out of the game, didn’t feature as a serious interviewee. The Jets probably think they’ve got a modern version of Rex. But let’s wait and see - they said that about Saleh and it did not work out for other reasons…

Back in the world of shit, failing teams, the Jets have already interviewed 12 head coaching candidates, with five more expected to be contacted this week.

That’s on top of the 15 general manager candidates.

32 people shortlisted. Which just confirms - as though anybody needed it confirming - that the owners and their suffocating acolytes have absolutely no idea what they’re doing. They genuinely don’t know what a good GM or HC even looks like on paper, let alone when he’s sitting in front of them.

32 people is not your shortlist. And it’s not being “thorough”, which is what some claim. It’s a scattergun approach to your most important personnel appointments.

It means you have no blueprint for what you want, you have no concept of which type of GM/HC you want and where to start in terms of selection.
Wouldn’t be surprised if they get very confused and interview Lopetegui.

I’m sure some of the candidates are decent or even very good. We might stumble upon a winning formula. But what are the chances? This is a franchise which, like West Ham, seems incapable of helping itself.
