Potter and JWP will immediately be on the same wave length. And if Potter is trying to implement his 4-2-3-1 formation then JWP adds strength to the players he has to choose from as I don't think Potter has been too impressed with Alvarez and Rodriguez. He may just want to look at JWP and assess for himself. Anyhow, he isn't playing at Forest so may as well have him here.

I think he's better as an attacking midfielder who arrives late into box to shoot the loose balls. He's no deep lying defensive midfielder that's a given.

Hopefully Potter can encourage him to work on his set pieces again...direct free kicks - I don't know why he was sidelined in this aspect. He can do it.

I agree. I think the only good games he had for us was when he played in a more advanced role. Although if Ferguson plays up front we already have Bowen, Kudus, Paqueta and Soler ahead of him for the 2 CAM roles. I suspect he'll only be used as a late sub when we're desperate and want to get something out of set pieces.

As for his direct free kicks, he's only ever scored them from a very specific part of the pitch, an area between the penalty spot and about 10 yards to the left. I always thought Moyes should have had Benrahma or Paqueta looking to get fouled in that area, but they never did.

His default passing is sideways and backwards. You might get two or three creative, defence-splitting passes in a whole season. Not good enough.

Average is better than what we currently have available in CM.

Ok the point still stands, Potter wants to have a grip on possession and press well. Those 3 don't fit that narrative at all. Attacking wise its not offering much either. 

 

Ok, so what's the alternative? 

Play Guido? Irving? Orford is clearly a million miles off being ready.

JWP will look better in a more possession based system.

He may not be a starter but I would like to see him fully firing to see if he can merit a place in the squad.   Orford not 100% ready? based on what.  JWP is decent on the ball but not much legs and does go sideways and backwards alot. He will need to have technical players and legs around him.

As said will be interesting to see if Potter can get a tune out of him.    Clearly not suited to low block, fast break football, as was the case at West Ham and Forest.  Always seemed a bit headless chicken when in our midfield in open play, but given Alvarez's propensity to pick up yellows, maybe Ward Prowse as a replacement harrier in those situations makes sense.

At least with Potter you'll know he'll assess the players strengths and look to leverage them, rather than just ask him to do a job he's not suited to.

He's also a good character to have around the place, a proper hard worker and good club man.

Glad he’s back. Our set pieces will improve immeasurably, but he will need to play to higher tempo under Potter.

Hopefully this lets us let Irving go on loan to the Championship. He could become a saleable asset, but needs game time to prove it...to slow for the Prem but very tidy in possession with a good shot on him. Could be worth a few million lower down.
