Womens football will never be a spectacle the way men's is, the gap in quality is too far. What is fantastic is the actual taking part, the grass roots - young women participating in a team sport. The benefits to society far outweigh the couple of million spent on the WPL. There has to be an elite level of every sport or its pointless. It shouldnt be promoted as equal to the mens game, its not - its nonsense. But it does derserve tv coverage and investment imo.

I would agree that women participating in a team sport is a good thing. But women always participated in teams sports. The girl's playing football were likely to have played netball or hockey if football wasn't an opportunity. But there is another question here, if we all agree women's football is nowhere near as good as the mens', why would you want to watch it? Yes we like to watch lower league football which isn't elite, but that's already available. What does Women's football offer the average football fan that isn't already available?

The point is underlined by the fact that the women's game is entirely reliant on the men's for its existence. Websites invested in its promotion deliberately don't let you filter the content so you can ignore women's game. The interest in the game is entirely manufactured by two groups: businesses that think there is market to be created and culture warriors on the left who see it as feminist and overrepresented by dykes (they see it as an antidote to the heterosexual men's game). 

I have no problem women wanting to play football. I have daughter and I am happy for her play in a team. But the promotion of the women's professional game is at best cynical if not outright sinister.

Nice post Honky Cat. I read up a bit for Fauxstralian, hope he appreciates it! Deloitte do a report on football including the WSL. Women's football is going in that self sustaining direction Faux. Incomes are inceasing now 5,7M average per club in the WSL, but looks like costs are increasing as well. They say clubs are trying to separate men and women finances. Chelsea is in the lead and are apparently close to making Chelsea Women independent from the men and will sell shares in the seperate Women's club to make it fully independent. The group finances make it hard to calculate exactly whats going. For example in many clubs shirt sponsors pay a single fee to sponsor both men and women shirts and no one knows how to divide the deal between the two. They call this group income as they do not know what to do with it. When the calculations are done like this, yes, all but 1 WSL club made loses in 23/24 season, total loses for the league were 21M an average of 1.7M per club. One interesting thing they say is 80% of support for WSL is people new to football, so it is also building it's own base that is seperate from mens football. Conclusion is Faux, they are going in the direction you want so, don't worry too much, just have to see if it can be accelerated.
Hate to say it, but we are the poorest club in the WSL. Put like that our women are punching above their financial position. They do not go into our finances, but I think the West Ham finacial report does. Someone should have a look? Maybe I will.

Maybe Goose, I agree it shouldn't be subsided. I support the Women though, 100%. The likes of City, Arsenal and Chelsea as usual pushing the spending to the limit making it hard for the rest to compete without subsidising. The costs of being in the WSL and meeting the ground requirements do not help either!
