Was in Bangkok last weekend, meeting up with some friends I'd not seen since before Covid. The Chequers on Sukhumvit Soi 4, since you're asking.

Friends of friends joined us and we spent the afternoon putting the world to rights.

Got chatting with one of these "Friends of friends" and ir went along the lines:

Him: "Where you from?'

Me: "Romford, originally."

Him "Who do you support?"

I gave him my hardest "What a stupid question!" look and replies "West Ham, naturally".

He then made what I took to be a Crossed-arms "Hammers salute", but said "You won't like me, then".

Uncrossed his arms to reveal a Millwall tattoo on each forearm.

My response was "Proper Old school East London are Millwall," and so began a long afternoon of reminiscing about football (and London in general) of the 70s & 80s. Proper fan he was, and gave me the impression he'd have the back of anyone in who's company he was happy - including West Ham fans.

He was 100% in the "We don't care" camp and proud of it.

When it was time to move on (to Soi Cowboy, naturally), all the others in the group came up with comments such as "Are you & Colin twins separated at birth?", given that we seemed to have - and talked endlessly about - similar pasts.

For what it's worth, he wished West Ham success..."Until you play us again!!"

Sadly, during the afternoon he revealed that he had cancer (pretty advanced, too), so in all likelihood I doubt if I'll ever meet him again (he lives in Northern Thailand), which would be a shame given that we managed to bounce so many memory triggers off each other.

I agree we’ve never been political, but always had a strong following with England, the areas we live mostly vote centre right, and while we have lefties, not the spastics that you’d find around Shoreditch, Clapham and Islington most days.

I'm 52 and I don't know many Millwall supporters. Eldest brother aside  and I haven't seen him since Xmas 2006 .  Which show the rarity of them . Of all the south London clubs there the most loyal fanbase. But the only competition is the pair of Nigel's .

And whilst yes, Millwall the area is on the Isle of Dogs, they have virtually no fans in the East End (aside from an handful on the island) and haven’t since they moved South over 100 years ago.

Also, if you knew your WHU history, you’d know we were founded as Thames Ironworks in Trinity Buoy Wharf which is the old East End (west of the River Lea).
