Sir Alf" wrote: 16 Feb 2025, 09:44 Good summary Nutsin. Potter reverted to a back 4 and got central midfield wrong relying on the slowest double pivot central midfield in the Premiership. A back 3 seems a better fit but also when Paqueta dropped deeper we had 3 in the central mid and stopped Brentford having so much space to run into when they countered. As u say, Paqueta has to play deeper with the game ahead of him.

Not writing Potter off yet but he has to learn we cannot  play a 2 person central midfield of Alvarez and Soucek and that Mavro in a 4 man back 4 us going to be risky. Hopefully wont see either mistakes repeated?  Main other thing we need is Ferguson and Todibo to get and stay fit
Yeah, interesting summaries, Alf and Nutsin.

I also think it’s far too early to judge Potter. These are not his players and there’s just no way he’d have signed most of them. I’m not saying he’ll rip it up at West Ham (who knows), but his teams don’t generally look like us right now.

This old, slow and tired squad has a LOT of problems. But by far the biggest problem I can see is in central defence.

Nutsin summed it up nicely: “Mavrapanos still getting in the side as a starter makes you wonder just how good he must show at practice all week because on match day he is always one of the worse players on the field.”

Its not that Mavrapanos is any good - he’s fucking terrible. A mistake waiting to happen. It’s just that we don’t have any depth, and the other centre halves are also woeful - or injury prone.

We’ve spent (or agreed to spend) a small  fortune on some absolute dross. Kilman is the worst £40m footballer I’ve ever seen. He has the turning circle of an oil tanker and regularly gets destroyed for pace over ten yards - let alone 20+. It means we can’t really play, or get, high up the pitch quickly enough. So he forces us to play a way that Potter probably doesn’t want. Absolute waste of that huge outlay. Slow, off the pace mentally, and too easily exposed because of it. His saving grace is that he doesn’t really make “mistakes” like Mavrapanos - and he is a battler. It’s just that his physical attributes are poor for the modern Premier League, where opponents are often athletes more than footballers.

Mavrapanos was in excess of £20m. We've agreed to spend £34m on Todibo, who is a good player but injury prone - and clearly nursing his way through the season. And we spent £30m on Aguerd who started well, deteriorated under Moyes and then got loaned out by a hopeless manager who had no idea what he was doing.

Thats £125m worth of “talent” and we’re catastrophically poor at the back.

Fixing that will take some doing. Who, for example, will want to sign Kilman at his fee/wages - unless it’s a move like a return to Wolves for half the money?

Moyes and Lopetegui royally lumped us in it.
I also have to say that Sullivan - and the departed (and largely over-rated) Steidten should hang his head in shame over the Kilman deal. How a chairman and technical director could let a new manager sign somebody so obviously limited for £40m and then put him on astronomical wages and a seven-year contract, is beyond me.

Club chairman rightly and wrongly get blamed for a lot of things - some within their control, some not. But that Kilman deal was akin to falling asleep at the wheel.

I reckon Paq will get cleared and go to Brazil in exchange for a couple of players.

I’d be very impressed if they managed to sell Soler, given that we don’t actually own him.
Releases us from his huge wages which means more money in the kitty.
Oh so when you were quoting transfer fees you actually meant wages?

That would be an absolute no brainer
To be honest if any player under 33 who is keen to move to Saudi  should be shipped out especially with that sort of fee
Of course that needs to go towards rebuilding the squad

You can't not take that sort of money for him. What a tremendous bit of business it would be. Should be able to get 3-4 Potter type players in for that, and it solves the Kudus and Bowen conundrum.

I notice that since we missed out on Broja, he's not exactly been pulling up any trees.

Dodged a bullet on that one maybe?  Think they were talking about £35-40m for him before he got his injury and since he's been back he's not done much.

https://www.hammers.news/transfer-news/ ... is-summer/

So it’s time to move on and forget the Lille duo.It must be taken into account the fact Potter and Macaulay are predominantly targeting younger players.

Although the availability of some slightly more experienced players for no fee may prove tempting depending on how things work out for the Hammers in terms of sales.

Here’s 10 free agents cash-strapped West Ham can realistically sign this summer.

Olivier Boscagli, centre-back and left-back
PSV Eindhoven star Olivier Boscagli is a former French under 21 centre-back who can also play at left-back. The 27-year-old has been a near ever-present in PSV’s side for the last six years. But his time in Holland is coming to an end and he is available on a free this summer. Brighton, Spurs and Dortmund have been credited with an interest.

Frank Anguissa, central midfielder
At 29, Frank Anguissa may not be the profile Potter and Macaulay are necessarily looking for to rejuvenate an ageing midfield. But despite a mixed time at Fulham, Cameroon international Anguissa has been a revelation at Napoli, helping them win a first title in 33 years. Looks set to be available on a free and is a combative midfield general who possesses a lot more agility and running power than West Ham’s current offering.

Tyrick Mitchell, left-back
The emergence of Ollie Scarles has been a major positive in West Ham’s dismal season. Emerson Palmieri is out of favour, inconsistent and one of the players who could be sold this summer. Meanwhile Aaron Cresswell is turning 36 next season. So West Ham will need another left-back and Crystal Palace ace Tyrick Mitchell looks a fantastic capture on a free this summer. The 25-year-old has been excellent for Palace. That will likely mean a host of rival suitors, but the Hammers should be throwing their hat in the ring. Having Mitchell one side and Aaron Wan-Bissaka the other would make for a formidable full-back pairing.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, striker
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been linked with West Ham for several windows under David Moyes, Julen Lopetegui and, in January, Potter too. On his day when fit and firing, Calvert-Lewin can be a top centre-forward. Unfortunately injury means those days are too few and far between. At 28, the Everton striker should still have some of his best years ahead of him. Do West Ham take a chance that could be with them or learn from their many lessons in the past to avoid injury-prone strikers like the plague. The problem is the Hammers need at least two strikers this summer, possibly three. A lack of funds may not give the club much choice to bring in one more experienced striker on a free as back-up. In that scenario Calvert-Lewin could be a good option.

Kyle Walker-Peters, full-back
West Ham were in talks to sign Kyle Walker-Peters last summer but brought in Wan-Bissaka instead. A deal could not be reached because West Ham were only offering a token amount due to the Southampton ace being out of contract this summer. The fact Walker-Peters can play just as well at left-back as he does on his natural right hand side is a huge plus for the Hammers who need versatile players. Especially if Vladimir Coufal and Emerson leave, they could bring in Walker-Peters for nothing knowing he can fill in on both sides. He continues to be linked with a move to east London and at 27, with plenty of pace, is a very decent option. Walker-Peters will also fill a homegrown player slot.

Josh Brownhill, central midfielder
Burnley ace Josh Brownhill is another who has been linked with West Ham for some time now. The combative and energetic star is available on a free and at 29, it’s his last chance for a big move. Like with a number of other free agents this summer, the fact he is English is a key factor for the homegrown status quota. But will Potter want another midfielder close to his 30s?

Alex Meret, goalkeeper
West Ham may need to bring in a new goalkeeper this summer with Lukasz Fabianski turning 40 and Alphonse Areola’s future uncertain. The club has recently been linked with the likes of James Trafford and Aaron Ramsdale. That suggests Potter may be wanting to start afresh with a new long-term goalkeeper signing. But it’s hard to see West Ham spending a big portion of their budget on a goalkeeper when other areas are arguably in more urgent need of repair. Alex Meret, 28, is leaving Napoli this summer and was linked with West Ham in January. He could be an option to compete with Areola for the number one spot if Fabianski moves on after links with a return to Poland.

Tariq Lamptey, full-back
Tariq Lamptey knows Potter very well from their time at Brighton. He was brilliant when he first burst on the Premier League scene under West Ham’s manager. Things have tailed off a bit for London-born Lamptey in recent seasons and persistent injuries have been an issue. That might be reason enough to avoid. But at 24 and with bags of pace, he fits the profile Potter and Macaulay like. Lamptey can also play on the right and left and versatility will be key for the Hammers.

Krépin Diatta, winger and forward
Krépin Diatta is a Senegalese winger and forward who plays for Monaco and his national team. The 26-year-old is pacy and powerful and one of the better attacking free agents available this summer. Rated at over £30m at one time, Diatta has let his contract run down in the hope of a move to the Premier League.

Rayan, winger and forward
At 18 and one of the most promising young wingers in Brazilian football – where have West Ham fans heard that before? – Rayan is one of the star attractions of the summer free agent market. The Vasco da Gama star is electric. But he has a host of Premier League and La Liga clubs on his tail. West Ham should have kept the £20m they paid for Luis Guilherme and put more on the table in a contract to sign Rayan this summer. It would be an ambitious attempt from West Ham to sign the winger. The big difference to Guilherme is that if it doesn’t work out, no transfer fee means no big losses.

Other notable free agents worth considering for West Ham:
  • Victor Lindelof, 30, centre-back.
  • Callum Wilson, 33, striker.
  • Adama Traore, 29, winger.
  • Nelson Semedo, 31, full-back.
  • Caleb Willey, 20, left-back.

I notice in Alan’s report about the latest “wonderkid” the line: “Michael Jackson, Academy Manager at Glentoran”.  Unfortunate name for someone overseeing the kids in an academy. Suppose it could have been worse ? James Saville could have been the assistant or an Irish priest 🤭

If Rigg is the real deal it could get interesting. If Sunderland go up it ain't happening though.

Apparently Potter was seen in Lille two weeks ago, I think he is very keen on Gomes, but it appears Gomes isn't keen on us.

I meant half the Sunderland squad!! Yeah see that about Rigg but also up to 5 players in total.
To be fair some of our successes have come from the Championship, so it's probably not the worst place to go shopping for a couple of young players- maybe not exclusively at one club though!

It's getting ridiculous to get anyone in these days who has shown an iota of promise or beat more wealthy clubs to them. Even at 19 with one PL season under his belt, Dibling is clearly going to go for a fortune to one of them.
100 million the alleged price they’ve put on his head. Madness.

West Ham United sign Joel Kerr from Glentoran on long-term contract

Joel Kerr has signed a long-term contract with West Ham United which takes him up to 2028

Image

A Glentoran youngster is celebrating after signing a long-term deal with West Ham United. Joel Kerr has committed his future to the Hammers until 2028.

The 16-year-old from County Tyrone was being linked with several clubs across Europe after starring for the Glens' Academy over the past five years. The exciting winger will make the move to London this summer.

Kerr - who joined Glentoran in 2020 - is a Northern Ireland Under 17 international and regarded as one of the hottest prospects to emerge from the country in recent years.

The teenager, who hails from The Rock, captained Glentoran’s U14s to a National League title in 2023 before leading the U16s to the NIFL Academy League crown last year.

Andy Mathieson, Head of Player Development at Glentoran, said: “We are absolutely delighted for Joel and his family. This is a fantastic opportunity for a young player who has shown exceptional dedication, maturity and talent throughout his time in the Glentoran Academy.

"He’s a natural footballer with real quality, but it’s his attitude and work ethic that truly set him apart. From an early age, Joel stood out as a real prospect — someone with undoubted ability and the mindset to match.

"He’s worked incredibly hard on his game and always listened to the Academy staff. That blend of talent and mentality meant we always had high hopes for him. We’re excited to watch Joel continue his development at West Ham and we’ll be supporting him every step of the way.

“Joel’s move is another huge boost for our Academy and underlines our position as one of the leading youth development programmes in the country. Whether players break into the Glentoran first team or move across the water to professional clubs, our focus is to develop technically gifted, tactically intelligent and well-rounded young footballers who are ready for the next step on their football career.”

Michael Jackson, Academy Manager at Glentoran, added: “I’m absolutely delighted for Joel and his family. No one deserves this opportunity more right now. He’s earned it through sheer determination, consistency and the standards he sets for himself and those around him.

“When he was part of our U16 NIFL squad last season, every single player looked up to him. He led by example through his passion and drive and he played a huge part in helping that group win the league title. It’s incredibly rewarding to see a player like Joel progress, not just because of his ability, but because of the character and leadership he’s shown throughout his journey with us.”

Kerr becomes the latest in a long line of Glentoran Academy graduates to earn a move to professional football across the water, reinforcing the Academy’s reputation as a proven pathway to elite-level football.

Recent moves include George Feeney, who joined Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2024 and Rhys Walsh who earned a move to EFL Championship club Sunderland in January.

Conor Haughey signed with Fleetwood Town in 2023, while Mason Munn and Francis Turley completed moves to Scottish Premiership sides Rangers and Celtic respectively in 2022.

Paul Millar, Sporting Director at Glentoran, said: “West Ham are gaining a fantastic young footballer. We have no doubt Joel will be a success within their highly respected youth system and we’ll be watching his progress with pride.

“This move is another proud moment for Glentoran and clearly demonstrates the strength of the development pathway within our Academy. Joel is the latest in a long line of talented players to take the next step into the professional game. He’s a shining example of what can be achieved through hard work, consistency, commitment and, of course, undoubted ability.

“Credit must also go to Michael Jackson and Stephen Lowry in the Academy, whose influence on Joel, both as a footballer and as a young man, has been instrumental in preparing him for this next stage, as well as to his family, who have made countless sacrifices to support him over many years.

“While Joel begins an exciting new chapter, our focus remains on nurturing the next batch of Academy talent coming through, players who will either make an impact in our first team or follow similar paths into full-time football across the UK and beyond.”

of course, we have to hope whoever comes in, that one is ready for the Premiership immediately because we definitely need 2 for the central midfield with an athletic profile.

Lets hope we uncover a gem or 2 like Brighton always seen to in that area. We will finally replace Rice should we get it right but this is West Ham so never underestimate the power of Sullivan, Brady or someone to fvck things up. Its what we do but fingers crossed and all that.

Imho we get this central mid area sorted with the correct profile of players we can be looking up challeging for the top 8. Get it wrong again and it will be another season bobbing arpund the bottom 8.
Fully in agreement. Someone like Rigg, and you'd hope someone else in that mould a little older who can hold the fort for 'now' as we can't expect a 17/18 year old lad to just come in and instantly run the midfield every single match. Maybe they can convince Gomes for 1-2 seasons with the promise of an onward move if an offer comes in as a stepping stone if he's reluctant to commit long term.

Also read this earlier https://www.claretandhugh.info/graham-p ... june-12th/

With the summer transfer window opening on June 12th, Kyle Macaulay and his recruitment team have been hard at work compiling a list of targets that reflect a notable shift in strategy—one that places greater emphasis on recruiting younger, more versatile players.Having developed strong connections within the Scottish leagues, West Ham have already moved early to sign striker Josh Landers from Hibernian. Talks are also ongoing with Celtic’s Daniel Cummings, while scouts have been spotted at Airdrie tracking the progress of highly rated twins Dylan and Cole Williams.Closer to home, the club have maintained a close eye on the Championship, particularly at Sunderland. As Claret & Hugh has previously reported, Chris Rigg remains the most likely signing, and it’s believed his agent has already held talks with West Ham. Interest in Eliezer Mayenda and Jobe Bellingham continues, though Spurs are also monitoring the situation.

Another Championship player on the radar is Burnley’s CJ Egan-Riley, who offers tactical flexibility with the ability to play right-back, centre-back and in defensive midfield.Further afield, Danish centre-back Lucas Høgsberg at FC Nordsjælland is being closely monitored, as is Dutch midfielder Ezechiel Banzuzi. West Ham submitted a bid for Banzuzi in January which was reportedly rejected, although sources suggest his club were reluctant to sell mid-season. With Borussia Dortmund currently leading the race, the Hammers still remain interested and may revisit the deal in the summer. In terms of striking options, the situation with Evan Ferguson remains unresolved. Both the player and his parent club are reportedly frustrated with his lack of minutes since joining West Ham on loan in January.Meanwhile, the club’s long-standing interest in Jonathan David is well known, but several new attacking names have emerged:
  • Evann Guessand (Nice)
  • Emanuel Emegha (Strasbourg)
  • Arnaud Kalimuendo (Rennes)
It’s shaping up to be a very busy summer at the London Stadium, with major turnover expected in the first-team squad and a clear desire to build a younger, more dynamic group under Graham Potter’s leadership.
