James Tomkins retires
Will be turning 36 on Saturday
Left for Palace as Bilic wouldn’t guarantee him a start
Always thought that was a mistake on his part

A waste of a career really.

That's league only. 386 appearances in total.

Think he left because Ogbonna was ahead of him
Then Ogbonna went off the boil so he would have played

Re: James Tomkins retires
Good player for us I thought. The deal for West Ham and Tomkins to go to Palace was too good to turn down (think we got £11m for him). Injuries held him back at Palace but early on at Palace the fans I know (my cousin's) always said he was decent. Surprised he was at Palace so long to be honest though.
He is one of the players that people say 'he was shit' or 'very average' which, being honest, he was at PL level. But he reminds me and others at the level the top PL level is. And how good you have to be a to be a 'good' PL level player.
Playing 400 senior PL games is seriously good.

Re: James Tomkins retires
His best years for us were under Allardyce. Bilic came in and didnt fancy him as much. Played him right back some games if i remember aswell.
Shame he left. Was never a world beater but was a solid CB.

Re: James Tomkins retires
Good player, Tomkins. But just when he reached the stage of his career when many CBs kick on, he became a bit injury-prone. Part of modern football, of course, but according to the meeja he went chasing guarantees about the first team etc., and ended up leaving. The deal he got at Palace was a good one for him and I'm not sure Bilic fancied him as a first-teamer (Slav thought Reid would play a lot more!).
Shame, because he promised a lot. He was hardly a failure - always a decent player - but I can't help but feel he didn't quite fulfil his potential.

Re: James Tomkins retires
I think one of his injuries was with one of his eyes, but always seemed to be either injured on on the bench. Played 125 games in 8 years there. I always quite liked him as a CB.
Re: James Tomkins retires
When he was a first team regular at Palace my old boss, a Palace fan,at the time said he was decent. Had a lot of injury problems later on and never really recovered. Still played nigh on 400 senior games so not a bad career at all.

Didn't it all start to go wrong shortly after he was picked for the "Team GB" Olympics football squad?

There was a defensive mix up and it all kicked off. Apparently they were mates and next door neighbours, as well. Tomkins left the following season and i was shocked as he seemed to be west ham through and through.
They are both well versed in the art of back alley banditry I reckon
