the last few days I’ve seen scores of undercover police cars zooming about, in many cases armed wearing tactical gear.

I suspect that there is a major terrorise threat right now and our friends in the east are behind it.

If it's any help, about 8 unmarked police cars and 4 or 5 actual police cars all raided the Shell garage on Blue Bell Hill last night. I didn't see any customers there so it must have been the staff. They're not white. Maybe something to get you started in your investigations.

Years ago that garage was well known for cloning credit cards but as far as I know nothing dodgy has gone on there for a long time.

They can’t be very good at their job if you spotted them so easily.
