Sir Alf" wrote: 16 Feb 2025, 09:44 Good summary Nutsin. Potter reverted to a back 4 and got central midfield wrong relying on the slowest double pivot central midfield in the Premiership. A back 3 seems a better fit but also when Paqueta dropped deeper we had 3 in the central mid and stopped Brentford having so much space to run into when they countered. As u say, Paqueta has to play deeper with the game ahead of him.

Not writing Potter off yet but he has to learn we cannot  play a 2 person central midfield of Alvarez and Soucek and that Mavro in a 4 man back 4 us going to be risky. Hopefully wont see either mistakes repeated?  Main other thing we need is Ferguson and Todibo to get and stay fit
Yeah, interesting summaries, Alf and Nutsin.

I also think it’s far too early to judge Potter. These are not his players and there’s just no way he’d have signed most of them. I’m not saying he’ll rip it up at West Ham (who knows), but his teams don’t generally look like us right now.

This old, slow and tired squad has a LOT of problems. But by far the biggest problem I can see is in central defence.

Nutsin summed it up nicely: “Mavrapanos still getting in the side as a starter makes you wonder just how good he must show at practice all week because on match day he is always one of the worse players on the field.”

Its not that Mavrapanos is any good - he’s fucking terrible. A mistake waiting to happen. It’s just that we don’t have any depth, and the other centre halves are also woeful - or injury prone.

We’ve spent (or agreed to spend) a small  fortune on some absolute dross. Kilman is the worst £40m footballer I’ve ever seen. He has the turning circle of an oil tanker and regularly gets destroyed for pace over ten yards - let alone 20+. It means we can’t really play, or get, high up the pitch quickly enough. So he forces us to play a way that Potter probably doesn’t want. Absolute waste of that huge outlay. Slow, off the pace mentally, and too easily exposed because of it. His saving grace is that he doesn’t really make “mistakes” like Mavrapanos - and he is a battler. It’s just that his physical attributes are poor for the modern Premier League, where opponents are often athletes more than footballers.

Mavrapanos was in excess of £20m. We've agreed to spend £34m on Todibo, who is a good player but injury prone - and clearly nursing his way through the season. And we spent £30m on Aguerd who started well, deteriorated under Moyes and then got loaned out by a hopeless manager who had no idea what he was doing.

Thats £125m worth of “talent” and we’re catastrophically poor at the back.

Fixing that will take some doing. Who, for example, will want to sign Kilman at his fee/wages - unless it’s a move like a return to Wolves for half the money?

Moyes and Lopetegui royally lumped us in it.
I also have to say that Sullivan - and the departed (and largely over-rated) Steidten should hang his head in shame over the Kilman deal. How a chairman and technical director could let a new manager sign somebody so obviously limited for £40m and then put him on astronomical wages and a seven-year contract, is beyond me.

Club chairman rightly and wrongly get blamed for a lot of things - some within their control, some not. But that Kilman deal was akin to falling asleep at the wheel.

I wasn't responding to you.

You're taking all this far too personally, son. You should be glad you weren't on here a few years ago, you wouldn't have lasted 2 minutes.

What we need before anything else is some good players, before we worry about apparent 'leaders'.

Soucek is captain of his country, JWP captained a team in the Premier League for years, Alvarez is Mexico captain. Look where that's got us.

Sign some midfielders that can get about the pitch at quicker than snails pace, and can pass the football. If they are leaders, that's a bonus.

That's part of my thinking but also player's that are actually decent and can make a real impact to a sides fortunes. Ferguson may not even be achievable as he should now have a lot of suitors also chasing him, but he is the kind of player we should be looking for as a 1st team starter. And if other Teams aren't all that interested as he continues to go under the radar then I'd like us to look in to it.

As for paying for someone like  him, I'd be selling the likes of Alvarez, Rodriguez and possibly Ward-Prowse.

TBR

West Ham have told £20m player he can leave amid interest from Leeds United

West Ham United have told Tomas Soucek that he can leave the club this summer, TBR Football can reveal.

Since he arrived at the club in 2020, Soucek has amassed 243 appearances for West Ham and he’s enjoyed a strong season despite the Hammers’ struggles.

Soucek has scored nine goals this term and the 30-year-old has continued to force a way into Graham Potter’s starting eleven, just as he did under Julen Lopetegui.

The Czech Republic international is on target to hit double figures for a second season in a row — something West Ham’s strikers often fail to achieve.

However, the former David Moyes favourite could be set to depart east London in a few months’ time.

West Ham put Tomas Soucek up for sale

TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey understands that a host of West Ham’s Premier League rivals are showing interest in signing Soucek.

Both Everton and Leeds United are keen on Soucek and it’s understood that up to five Premier League clubs have held talks.

TBR are informed that one of those teams are currently pushing for a Champions League place, which should therefore be an exciting proposition for Soucek.

Despite his contributions over the last four or so years, Soucek is not seen as part of Potter’s long-term plans.

West Ham need to raise funds to help their summer recruitment and the Czech international is seen as one of their most sellable assets.

In fact, West Ham are interested in Junior Firpo at Leeds for example, even if he might be available on a free transfer.

Tomas Soucek’s asking price

If Moyes is keen to take Soucek to Merseyside, or if Daniel Farke envisions the 30-year-old as someone who could help Leeds stay in the top flight, then it’s believed that a £20m bid could suffice.

Soucek’s West Ham contract runs until 2027 and the Hammers would be looking to sell the midfielder for a similar fee which they paid to Slavia Prague for his services in 2020.

Interestingly, when speaking in an interview in January, Soucek seemed pretty enthused about Potter’s new style, even if he now might not be sticking around for the journey.

Soucek said: “We can see what he wants to do at the training ground as his message is very clear how he wants to keep the ball and press the opponent.

“It depends on the team we are playing against, but as players we know the approach and we practice at the training ground all the time and if I see this progress like I saw on Sunday I will be happy as we’ll keep improving.”

Guessing they are giving him the opportunity to announce his retirement before they just say he is being released

Said to someone the other day I can see him forging a media career as a ‘personality’
Like Micah Richards but less of a guffawing buffoon

Dungannon school offer 'best wishes' as Irish League teens prepare for Premier League moves to Chelsea and West Ham United

St. Patrick's Academy Dungannon have offered their “congratulations and best wishes” to Year 12 pupils Chris Atherton and Joel Kerr with the pair set to join Premier League giants this summer.

Both teenagers have came through the ranks at Irish League clubs – Atherton at Glenavon and Kerr with Glentoran – and their undoubted talent has now been recognised by some of England’s biggest teams.

St. Patrick's Academy Dungannon have offered their “congratulations and best wishes” to Year 12 pupils Chris Atherton and Joel Kerr with the pair set to join Premier League giants this summer.

County Tyrone teenager Kerr, who like Atherton is a Northern Ireland youth international, hasn’t made a senior Glentoran appearance but is a highly-rated academy product and has signed a long-term contract at West Ham United.

"As they approach their final few weeks in our school, we offer our congratulations and best wishes to two of our Year 12 students who will be embarking on exciting careers in the English Premiership following the completion of their GCSE examinations,” St Patrick’s posted on Facebook. “Both Joel and Christo have demonstrated exceptional skill, maturity, determination and talent in soccer from a very young age.

"Their hard work and dedication have already earned them places on Northern Ireland’s international teams, an outstanding achievement in itself. Joel has signed for West Ham United while Christo will join Chelsea at the end of June.

“We are immensely proud of their success and are excited to follow their journeys as they take this next major step in their sporting careers.

"We wish them every success for the future and know that they will continue to make us proud both on and off the field.”

I'm a bit surprised we are keeping Antonio to be honest. 35 and returning from a badly broken leg seems an unlikely choice even as a back-up striker for next season. Or perhaps they aren't telling him until he is fully recovered and can be tested fully?

I thought Cresswell might stay another year but his only position now is on the left of a back 3. Guessing the intention is for Aguerd to come back and be a part of the team? supposedly had a very good season in Spain and is a good option for that position.

Moyes felt undermined? Ings was his choice.

Not surprised (Coufal was going to go to Fulham in January but got blocked I think).
I just wonder what it says about Potter. Especially with Cresswell who some would say has been our best defender recently.
I wonder if some of these are Potters decisions or Sullivan?
Are the club going to allow him free reign in the transfer market this summer?
If not, do they not believe he will be successful?

I still think they are crazy keeping him. It's like turning up late for an interview, flunking all the questions and still getting the job. mental.

As mentioned testimonials for many years have seen the proceeds go to a charity chosen by the player
Believe the club have suggested to Cresswell that that could be the Karren Brady Botox Fund

i was a bit suprised to see the announcement, very decisive of our club. Thought it would drag out until the end of june before releasing players. I expect all will continue their playing careers elsewhere. I think antonio will retire completely and thats why hes not included in this group, at this time.

I don't agree. Testimonials were fine when players weren't earning much more than the fans in the stands. It was a nice retirement (from playing) bonus. They (current players)  may want the money, but they don't need it now. Especially as a lot of them earn more in a year than most people earn in a life-time. If you want to give them a send off, do it at the last home game of the season.

If so, one for Antonio with proceeds going towards his car repair bill.

Could be one of the pre-season games.
His wages will more than take care of any expenses he might have.

I think it's a good thing we're moving on from them.  I had convinced myself they were going to offer a new contract to Cresswell, but I think it's the right thing to move on from him (and I really like Cresswell).

We'd have been treading water had we kept them, and we all know that's going backwards in this league.
