GK is the last of our worries. Aereola is decent.

The issue is that our outfield defenders need to minimise the shots he has to face. One of the reasons all this sweeper keeper stuff is so fashionable is that it's really not relying on the keeper at all to save lots of shots because the defensive setup has to be so good other teams rarely get a chance anyways. So then the keeper is free to push up an act as another defender for lots of the game.

So in reality a ball playing GK only works with a well drilled defensive setup and doesn't in itself actually make your defence better. I think we can see with Onana at Man Utd how a keeper who was known for playing out with the ball looks far worse than he should do because Man U's outfield defensive play is so poor.

With Potter’s “controlled possession” approach or tactics, the keeper is key to being able to probe for openings thru and around the opposition press especially if, like a lot of teams in the Premier League, they press high.  It is expected that the ball will be pinged around side to side, back and forth ( whether that is good to watch is another discussion ) and if done well and at pace, gets around or thru the press and released to the forwards to run into space.  A goalkeeper in that system needs to be a very good footballer, not just a great shot stopper and great aerially, with instant control and the ability to move his feet quickly, then play short, medium and long range passes accurately to feet. 

Areola is not that man and will limit the effectiveness of Potter’s system but with other higher priorities ( central midfield and centre forward ) may well be the number 1 for another season. All imho of course

Definitely wouldn't want Ramsdale, but there's playing out from the back and there's slicing out of play.

Yup his distribution is terrible. He's definitely a good shot stopper and has made some wonderful saves this season but he is limited/poor in other areas. I wouldn't want to bin him off for the sake of it but I'd be looking for an upgrade if it made sense financially weighed up with our other needs this summer.

It puzzles a bit me that so many WHU fans want to bin off Aerola.

I remember things like him keeping us in the game against Man Utd with a couple of worldies.

There's so many positions we're actually crying out for a huge improvement on.  GOALTENDING isn't one of them, in my eyes.

I'm not "yet" convinced by Kelleher. He hasn't played that many Premier League games at Liverpool (ten last season, ten the season before that) and, when he did, some analysts thought he was not physically dominant and a bit weak in the air for a Prem keeper. Good shot-stopper, of course. But he looks and sounds a lot like Areola without the experience.

Surely we want any replacement for Fabianski to be a likely starter? Gut feeling is that Kelleher would be behind Areola.

I reckon he's overrated. One of them that done ok behind that Liverpool defence, and suddenly he's a world beater. Never seen the fuss on the odd occasion I've seen him.

 

He's made a few big mistakes for them.

Reckon you could sell Areola for £10m to £15m to a European club to partially fund that

This would be an excellent signing.  
Apparently did an admirable job when the Brazillian lad was injured earlier in the season.
If he's looking for first team football too, then this could be a realistic option.

Depends if you play in such a way that requires a keeper to be good off the floor, because if you do then Areloa shouldn't even be in the conversation 

He made one decent save yesterday and one very good one, which was made better by Coufal's clearance off the toe of whoever it was who was following up. However he was closed down once and was in no man's land once when the hopeless £70m Man Utd centre forward thankfully fluffed his lines

If we can find the budget then I’d definitely bring in two keepers and ditch areola.

I think it was south bank who posted up a list of very good keepers playing in Italy at the moment. None of whom would cost anything close to the numbers British teams want.

Yep, imo too, Areola is not good enough with his feet and short, medium and definitely long range passing for the controlled possession game Potter is trying to implement.

Ordinarily, I'd have said Areola is the last of our problems, were it not for the crab football that we're going to be playing from now.

Given that we go sideways and back mostly with our passing, usually ending up back with Areola, and he's just lumping it forward with no conviction whatsoever. So yeah, we probably do need a keeper with top distribution over actual keeping ability. He probably sees more of the ball than anyone with this style.

However if you’re giving praise then I agree, he’s playing well as usual.
