Going to a gig on your own

What are people’s feeling about this?

OK it won’t be the absolute first time I’ve done this. But it will be only the second time. And the previous occasion was in 1987!
   I’m going to see Sophie B Hawkins next Monday at the Jazz Cafe.  I asked my usual selection of friends and they were either not interested (which is fair enough) or working.
Ive been wanting to see her live for years and she so rarely does concerts in the UK,  so I’ve bitten the bullet and bought a ticket for one.   There are a couple of friends of mine who have been going to gigs solo for years and think nothing of it, but it’s an unfamiliar experience for me. I’m a bit apprehensive of attending on my own which is of course a bit silly for a man in his mid 50s.   Maybe I should just ‘grow a pair’ 
       Do fellow WHOers go to gigs solo?

Just watched the Gun Control routine on Youtube. Very good. Will check out his show on Netflix. 

Well worth checking them all out- he's got 4 or 5. Watch them in chronological order if you can. Some hilarious stuff. He's very unPC.

Yeah it's great isn't it! I love his bit about flying over Afghanistan in a military helicopter. I'll have to check Tom Stade out. Cheers for the tip!

His podcast with Amos Gill is really funny. As was his old one he did beforehand.

Thank you for the encouragement guys.   The gig was great although short. She was only on for 70 minutes.  
I did feel awkward at first hanging around on my own, but that soon passed.    As I said in my original post I should just have grown a pair and not give a shit about going to gigs solo.  A mate of mine does it all the time.

Done it loads. Going to a gig on Thursday (my birthday too btw) on my own, and will probably enjoy it better than going with others who are not really interested. 

Also going to see this shower in New York next month on my own. Sure I’ll bump into a few familiar faces out there.

At the risk of totally contradicting myself, I got 5 tickets for Jim Jefferies at Hammersmith in September. My boy is flying in from Aus to join his  Sister,2 brothers and me. Can't remember the last time the 5 of us were in the same room at the same time. Genuinely excited for this.

I'm going to that as well. Looking forward to it. Jim's fucking funny. I'd heard he was finally doing UK again and dates were being announced imminently. Obviously it was while I was away this week and unable to get any when it was announced, but the missus texted me to say she saw it and got a couple of tickets for us. Ahhhhh lovely.

Done it a few times with some of the bands I like that I can't convince anyone to go with me to. It's ok. You can go stand where you want rather than where everyone agrees on, but it's just not as much fun. It is better to go by yourself than to just miss out, if you really want to go.

Fair play. There is a clear line between 'audience work' and being a drunk, abusive bastard. I could well imagine him being an offensive, drunken git on the tube, just having a go at some other unlucky passenger that night.

Disappointingly instances such as this often give an insight into the true nature of the individual.

I remember seeing him at the Comedy Store quite few years back. He was pissed as a fart and basically ripping apart a posh girl sat in the front row. 

I know you should expect to be roasted if you sit at the front, but it was the least funny thing I've ever seen at a 'comedy' show.

Exactly right Russ. Going alone, you are only responsible for yourself. My Mrs isn't a fan of stand up comedy at all and I love it,therefore I go to loads of comedy shows on my own and my night is never made any worse for not having company. If we go see a band we both like then great,we have a great night but I'd rather go alone than have her along just because she feels she has to be there. Going to see Danny Baker (again) next month, I'll be by myself and can't wait. 

Just admit the fact your wife is fictitious and you don't have any friends. This is not supprising for a bald, scrawny, racist biggot with no education like yourself.

What night did you go to Manchester?
I was there on the Saturday night,first time at that venue and was very impressed.

I was there the same night Man City were playing their final home game next door. Not great planning.

I thought the venue was OK, especially for acoustics and sight lines.

On the downside the leg room in the seats is really poor and the beer/ lager / cider choices are dire.

Was also at that gig on the Tuesday.

Also remember the the medical staff attending to an incident in the crowd rear of the stage, apparently someone had fallen down the stairs.

Speaking of gigs a couple of David Byrne shows in London (Eventim Apollo) next March popped up on my social media this morning 
He is always fantastic so took a look
£140 about 30 rows back in the circle & stalls were sold out in about 10mins… unless you wanted to pay £290

It's never bothered me. Ideally if it's a band I really like I prefer going alone, as opposed to with other people who are only 'sort of' interested in going. I love to 'lose myself' at a gig, especially if it's a favourite band.

same token though also like going with my girlfriend or mates, if they're really into the band as well, as you can take the same memories from the gigs.

I'd much rather do either of the above, rather than go along with people who aren't that into it.

Gigs aren't what they used to be mind, with a growing % more interested in the footage they're getting on their mobiles, rather than just watching and listening to the band.

Was dancing down near the front at a Chameleons gig a few years back and got tuts from a couple behind, as the temerity of me dancing was getting in the way of their mobile footage. I think they need to have another listen to the lyrics of the band....
