Again you're giving the manager a free ride. JWP's return to our midfield doesn't so much speak of the quality of the other players as us having a manager who prefers a player who is ideal for his crab ball tactics. A more forward thinking manager would have gone with a midfield of 2 out of Soucek, Alvarez, Soler or Paqueta with Kudus in the number 10 role. That would have been much more effective than JWP passing backwards and sideways all game.

Likewise I think you’re giving the players a bit of a free ride too, and also overestimating their ability somewhat, especially seen as we are trying to move all of them on. He tried all sorts, all those players. None of it really worked. We all saw that. Of course JWP’s return speaks volumes. We wouldn’t have asked for him back if the thought wasn’t that he was needed. If we manage (seems unlikely right now) to get a functional spine of a team for next season and are still dogshit then fair enough.

Don't know about "root cause" but I would be very interested to learn which of our players you think would be guaranteed starters for any of the three teams you mention.

I think it's a lot more with these two that they can't be arsed if they aren't playing in Europe, and see the club as beneath them and their talents. 

You mean the two players who left a club who play every single season in the Champions League or Europa to join a club who rarely qualifies for any European competition?

As for the other players, most of them just weren't/aren't plain good enough- which is the root cause on the football side of the club as to why we find ourselves here, although most of them ironically were probably trying multitudes harder. Yes it's frustrating if you're one of the ones that are actually any good, but then you step up. You lead by example. You do everything you can rather than have a tantrum and seek to move. Yes Sullivan and to a lesser extent Moyes, Lop and Stiedten owed them better teammates, but they owe us as well.

You're giving the manager(s) a completely free ride here and I don't understand why. They didn't "owe them better teammates". That's nothing to do with it. Managers need to deal with the players at their disposal and play them in a way that will produce the best performance and get the best results. Neither Lopetegui or Potter came close to doing that. That is the root cause of our on-field problems.

Yup I think they saw us as an absolute stepping stone. Nothing I guess wrong with that but again it comes down to professionalism and giving it your all, for me. And no doubt they were spun some wonderful lines by Sullivan as well with three seasons in a row in Europe as a 'club on the up'. You know, the same lines they used when we moved stadium and are notorious for chucking around with gay abandon.

Some players in our squad are good and our better players are better than those of those other clubs, but we also have some players in key positions who just aren't up to it. Coufal, Mav, Kilman, Cresswell (arguably), Todibo (according to some- also not fit), Guido, Soler, JWP, Soucek (according to some) That lot doesn't make a team greater than the sum of it's parts sadly. I'd argue we lack a platform to function well as a team when you consider those positions are meant to be the backbone of it. Especially in terms of energy and quality. Yeah you can blame Potter for not getting more of a tune out of them, but you can also say he'd been lumbered with a lot of them. You can blame his predecessors even more for not getting a tune out of them but also recruiting them. Sure other managers may have got more out of them, but they may not. It says it all that JWP couldn't get a kick at Forest, yet ended up the key fulcrum of our midfield when he returned. That indicates a gulf in quality and a glaring lack of it in our squad that we had to immediately bring him back and start him virtually every game for the rest of the season. Most worrying thing is that the process to replace any of them hasn't even started. Especially the midfield. Old and slow and can't compete.

It may well be the “controlled possession” tactics that Potter employs which have undermined Kudus’s effectiveness. He certainly prefers space to run into which is the attacking feature of sides that play on the counter as we tended to do under Moyes ( defend deep in shape etc ).  But there may be ither factors at play as there usually is.  2nd season syndrome when teams now know about the threat of Kudus and focus on stopping him turn and doubling up on him etc.  And of course his mentality is a factor. He was disapointing for his national side too last season and seemed to suffer a crisis of confidence beimg unable to score.  Then of course playing in his preferred position which he said was more of a number 10? So attititude definitely a factor too and I agree us not getting into Europe was not on his career plan. Last and not least he was looking for supply of the ball from the leagues slowest midfield.

All in all, imo probably best for all parties if he cuts and runs. Need at least £60 million though.

Alvarez has been too slow for the Premier Lge imho. Might be worth seeing how he gets on alongsode a player with “legs” and an engine though. But if an offer over 35 milliom comes in, probably best to take it?

Don't forget that tourists bring in more money per person each home game than old skool...well at least until we drop out of the PL next season, but, hey! When has Sullivan and the board ever planned that far ahead into the future?

 

They've been desperately trying to flog more season tickets. I've been bombarded with emails and texts asking me to buy more. So maybe not so keen on 5he tourists as money up front. 

 

 

The scramble for money up front strongly suggests a cash-flow issue - no surprises as Sullivan's MO seems to be one of sailing as close to having no cash in the bank at any time as you can.
