Summer Transfer Window 2025 | Official Thread

Post stubbo-admin »

May as well get going with this since with Sullivan at the helm, season ticket renewals slow, and the football vacuum to commence, this will soon be all the "news" there is.

Can Potter and MacCauley pull multiple rabbits out of the hat, or will Sullivan 'try really hard' with all of them before grabbing a few aging bargains from Big Willie Salthouse?

I'm not getting too carried away. He's played the equivalent of two full seasons in the Swiss league. For FC Lugano.

You could waste a lot of money signing six or seven players like that, and then realise you've got no wages or fees left for a striker capable of scoring in the toughest league in Europe.

But we employed McCauley and we have to give him a chance to do his thing.

What doesn't fill me with optimism is the link to Taremi of Inter. 33 year old striker. Could get him on a free transfer but I get a bad feeling about this....

Sounds weird, but this one quite encouraged me. Never seen him play (so massive caveat) but I like the fact we are being linked to players like this if there's truth in it. Getting in there at the right time and the right price, and the other clubs mentioned would bode well in suggesting he's got something about him. For me, this is the profile of player we really need to be looking at (alongside a couple of more established names of course) who may not necessarily make an impact right away, still very affordable but could grow into a very good player in a couple of years time and either be a mainstay for us, or move on for big money under the assumption we've planned properly and have a player fully ready to step in and replace him.

Anyway, a little bit of idealistic blue sky thinking really, but I'm just looking for some positive signs we are moving forward in the right way. That'll be dashed when he joins Brighton because Sullivan says no or buggers up the deal, he turns out to be great and moves on for 50 million in 2-3 years, and in the meantime we've gone all in on some 30 year old CB with massive wages, no resale value but a 'friendly agent' who is mediocre at best and sits there for 3 years not doing much but gobbling up 100k a week instead.
Sure, but you do have to be a little bit careful with targets like these. It's relatively 'easy' to look like a decent prospect in Swiss league. Remember Albian Ajeti, who we spent £8m on in 2019? He was in and out of the club quickly, because he just wasn't Premier League standard.

Everybody's on the lookout for rising stars, sure, and we should be in for them. But for every hit you tend to get three or four misses. The good thing is that McCauley does have an eye (and usually a computer programme) for some of this stuff. Let's hope he delivers.
Totally agree. But, he is only 22 and already has 60 first team appearances in the Swiss League. So he can't be a slouch.

Agree. Him and Diouf are signings that move us in the right direction. Young (both with good experience), hungry and good value. By all accounts we are in pole position with players terms agreed and club happy with offer made. Socials are saying it should be announced formally in 24/48 hours. But you never know.

My issue isn't really with KWP, although I don't rate him.

It's that the season is not very far away. We were utter shite last season and all we've really done so far is release a bunch of players and sign a twice-relegated reserve full-back.

There's not a lot to be excited about just yet. Even Big Meeks Richards would find it difficult to summon enough fake energy and enthusiasm at this point. And he thinks tying his shoelaces is the greatest thing ever.

Basically, our defenders will suddenly appear much more competent at their jobs if we have 2 young centre midfielders who have the legs to get back, cover and condense the space ahead of them to prevent being arse raped on the counter attack. It really it that simple

Potter is highly likely to go with three centre halves - but five at the back - regularly next season.

It's his default line-up when, like many managers, he fears a whupping from the big-spending sides. It's also how he stemmed the flow of goals against us last season under Lopetegui. So being of limited ambition, and generally fearful of decent sides, he will get risk averse again and play 5-4-1 regularly. He'll tell you it's 3-4-3. But when you look at how deep we'll sit and map where the two wide full-backs are, plus the two "inside forwards" starting deeper, it will look like the same 5-4-1 that we fannied around with a lot last season.

You know, the system that bored us all to tears because we never shot at goal, had 108 men behind the ball most of the time, and went sideways alot. That one.

Brave new world.

We have 6 central midfielders, that's not including the yoofs that are coming through like Potts.

We need to get rid of some of those before we bring any in.

We still only have 1 striker, who's injury prone, on the books.

Looking very likely that the deal for Hadjari will be closed in next 48 hours. Terms agreed and FC Lugano want to sell. 22 and already played 60 games in Swiss league. Seems like an exciting prospect.

he is a CB (but can play FB). So we already have Kilman, Todibo, Aguerd and Mavropanos. So it looks like at least one is on the way. Aguerd linked to Roma but they only want a loan. Must admit Aguerd looks as fit as a fiddle.

Is Potter going with a 3 at the back?

I find it mental that people don't think this is the overriding priority.

And while on the topic of tedious and negative ( which is my calling ), still not a whisper about strengthening that slow, statuesque central midfield. We have Soucek, JWP, Alvarez, Irvine, Paqueta, Potts but unfortunately no one to fill that large gap Rice left.

While this area of the squad remains the same, everything else we do transfer wise will be undermined imo and any improvement on last season severely hampered.
