Summer Transfer Window 2025 | Official Thread

Post stubbo-admin »

May as well get going with this since with Sullivan at the helm, season ticket renewals slow, and the football vacuum to commence, this will soon be all the "news" there is.

Can Potter and MacCauley pull multiple rabbits out of the hat, or will Sullivan 'try really hard' with all of them before grabbing a few aging bargains from Big Willie Salthouse?

Yeah that's fair and there's no reason he wouldn't do that and he might well do. Alternatively (and I can hear him saying this) 'We felt Callum Marshall give us a better chance of winning.' I don't think he'll play Wilson much at all anyway unless there's no choice a la Ferguson who I am becoming more convinced he didn't want either but was a situation similar to this. So to that end he doesn't even need to say anything. It'll be patently obvious if Wilson gets the minimum of playing time. Potter is going to act with a great deal more respect and integrity than Sullivan will. He won't scapegoat the player. This isn't the player's fault either.
I always felt we had an obligation to pay Nice more money for Todibo if he completed a certain amount of 90 mins, which is why Potter, and Lopetegui, always hooked him with a few mins to go.

Sullivan should have no influence on this team.

Agree- there have been whiffs of that with loads of loan players over the years as well IIRC, and loan to buy players, where a certain number of games or minutes played will likely trigger some sort of obligation.

And you're right, it just shouldn't be a factor in picking a team or managing a match. You'd be surprised if again the conversation with all those managers regarding those players wasn't something like 'You can have this player with these constraints, or nothing.'

There can't be another club run this shambolically.

Same with BFS, Bilic, Moyes etc.

We’ve had 15 years of an owner who meddles in the football side of the clubs he owns ( same when he owned Brum). He has failed spectacularly throughout this time, and yet his need for validation or just his ego means he cannot let go.  He remsins the insurmountable barrier to success.  He might be well intentioned? In his mind,he is thinking he knows best and Wilson will become an expected success and lead us to Europe with 30 goals. Conversly, he’s just looking after a mate ( Salthouse )?

As for announcing that to the media straight up, that those players were forced on him and he didn't want them, no manager would do that unless he's asking for the tin tack or he's basically irreplaceable. You just don't do that to your employer in public.  None of us would.
It doesn't have to be like that.

There would be nothing wrong with him saying:
"A couple of targets were put in front of me, but we decided against going in that direction and we'll focus on the kids coming through instead"

No headlines in that, no drama, but it explains to the supporters what's going on.

You do realise that these 3 managers are multi millionaires right? They have no need to work, they aren’t exactly on the breadline.

I think you're under the misapprehension they just do it for the money. They don't. The money is very nice but they love the job. It's a bloody hard all consuming job where you get loads of pressure, plenty of criticism and not a lot of praise.  You have to want the job, not the money. You won't hack it otherwise.

You forgot about Ings leaving.  Both him and Wilson are the same age, apart from Ings stays fit.

Grow a set, tell he'll play the kids instead and explain that to the media so the supporters understand what's going on.

He still can and might. The point I'm making is that he's being put in a position where it doesn't make sense to turn them down.

Probably got told it's Wilson or nothing striker wise if he wants to buy/prioritise midfielders or centre backs or doesn't want to sell X player.

If Wilson barely makes a dent in the wages structure then I guess it's not AS bad but still it's utter shithousery from Sullivan. And damn right the intention from Sullivan I am sure has been to eventually offer Antonio a lowball contract on deadline day if no-one else came in for him. Strikers done on the cheap from the barrow boy. We'll have a combined age of over 100 up front. The fact that Wilson and Antonio are so tight worries me. I hope they don't try and politick their way to sidelining Fullkrug in favour of themselves. I know Antonio has apparently played silly buggers before with this sort of thing although I'd imagine he's got somewhat less clout now, if he comes back.

Antonio will need to have guarantees of having a mate willing to chauffeur him in to gym rehab should he likely have his 3rd road accident, so it makes sense.

Hammers News get more wrong than right so we have that to cling onto, however, this smacks of Sullivan

“The manager does not want a striker which some feel is wrong,” the West Ham spokesman told Hammers News.“I feel we should sign two.“We expect to sign Callum Wilson, but that might not be enough in my opinion as he has had injury issues in the past too.”

It's all agreed and signed in principal. Brownhill has moved to Essex and will be slipped into the squad last week of August. We paid for his Ibiza camp and are paying his current trainer.

Sir Alf" wrote: 22 Jul 2025, 10:39 Hmmm… connecting the dots ( speculative ) I wonder if Sullivan tried to foist Wilson on Potter, Potter declines and Sullivan then puts out the story that Potter does not want a striker? Its plausible isnt it based on Sullivan’s history?  Sullivan always has to give a deal to one or more of his agent mates each window. His way of giving em some of West Ham’s dosh coz it aint his own personal wealth.

And as Scorch says, you have to wonder what goes thru Sullivan’s tiny mind? After 53 strikers of which 50 were floos he’s still getting involved putting his need for looking after family “friends” before the  needs of the club and its fans. Just more evidence of the massive millstone our owner is around the neck of our club. An almost insurmountable barrier to success.

I was just thinking the exact same thing actually. Yesterday's news is definitely connected to this. Part one-announce Potter doesn't want a striker (which I still think will be something out of context and far more nuanced if it was even said) trying to soften up our expectations and also making some people annoyed with Potter's supposed approach (as evidenced by some posts on here- seems like they might have been played like a fiddle) paving the groundwork for (Part two) the white knight Sullivan to ride up on his horse and deposit Callum Wilson on our doorstep out of the goodness of his heart. The whole narrative of this has been played out in a way to make Sullivan going over his manager's head to buy one of his mates' players seem like positive news and try to make us grateful in some way that Sullivan has saved us by buying a player none of us want and all feared we'd be lumbered with.

It's not just his theory.

Anyone with half a brain and has followed us for more than 5 mins knows this could quite well be a possibility.
