May as well get going with this since with Sullivan at the helm, season ticket renewals slow, and the football vacuum to commence, this will soon be all the "news" there is.

Can Potter and MacCauley pull multiple rabbits out of the hat, or will Sullivan 'try really hard' with all of them before grabbing a few aging bargains from Big Willie Salthouse?

Because it’s what the transfer stands for. It’s a Sullivan brown paper bag special off one of his mates for a player no one wants or needs who is a injury prone has been, which has been done before areas of actual need in the squad have been addressed. Financially it’s not horrible unless he plays.

Wilson is a symbol of all that’s rotten at and wrong with the club which is why it pisses people off. To boot he’s a player that’s openly mocked the club in the past. 

He’s the player you sign on deadline day if you’re desperate to fill one final squad place as insurance. Not before you’ve signed proper players. 

Bang on, and he’s taking up a place in the squad which could be used to help bring through any of our youngsters whose players deserve to see a way through to the main squad. In short a fucking awful signing, and so fucking predictable.

I hear you. But I do think there are some positives with JWP. His free kicks have been a massive disappointment but I think his corner taking is excellent and potentially a difference maker if Kilman, Todibo and Mavropanos could head the ball even half as well as dear old Craig Dawson. I’m hoping set pieces from JWP may be meat and drink to an improved Füllkrug. I’ve said before that I have a certain affection for JWP because of the goal he and Bowen contrived to score away at Spurs. But the reason Potter loves him is because he’s a really good guy who’s good for team spirit. The team look genuinely happier and more cohesive than they did this time last year. JWP is central to that. I am travelling tomorrow full of stupid optimism that we will win through two goals by Bowen and Füllkrug which are from JWP assists.

Does anyone know what system actually suits JWP? Considering he was Southampton captain and he will be vice captain for us, what are his actual qualities? It feels like we are building a team around him rather than anyone else. He’s been the constant in pre-season etc.

I think I’ve only seen him have one great game, I think under Moyes where he scored, quite early in to his time with us. Since then I feel like I dont “notice” his contribution in midfield. Also, the whole set piece thing, I feel there are loads of players that can whip a corner in and he hasnt scored a free kick for anyone in about 2yrs! Seems like a nice guy, but he baffles me.

If you would have told me we are building a team around a player that wasnt even third choice for Nuno at Forest I’d have laughed my head off. But we are where we are!


 

I actually think his best game was one we ultimately lost, against Leverkusen at home. He led the press that night. Moyes weirdly decided he didn’t like us steaming into teams after watching that and reverted us to type to get thumped for the rest of the season.

He’s on a play on no pay deal. Other bonuses on goals assists etc. It’s no risk really and don’t get why people are wetting their knickers over this. 

What I am pissed off about is that he is our viable back up to Fullkrug. 

If there is enough doubt about his fitness to offer him a pay as you play deal, when that already tells you that the club expect that he might face some time out through injury.

Absolutely not. I've got no idea if the bloke is injured or not. Guess we'll see whether he makes the bench tomorrow or not. I'd be surprised if not, but if he's not there, well, something is up.

We will lose I think at Sunderland and the following 3 games ( Chelsea, Forest etc ). The central midfield has been the issue for so  long and only Rice helped mask it but that was in a Moyesball set up where we regularly had only 30% of the ball.

It beggars belief that we are starting another season,  and now with a system based on controlled possession, without addressing it. 

Potter will pay the price of course but Sullivan’s reluctance to spend now ( after Kudus money used on Diouf and Maddsesson ) without selling is setting us up for a big fall this season imo.  Cannot see how we can improve without fixing the middle of the park or “engine room”. 

Nothing much to look forward to just now and really depressing tbh and Im usually a misery at the best of times

I'm the same I'm prepared to give him a fresh start, I also think he's been dealt a bad hand this window with no midfield upgrades, but hope they will be incoming. 

But I doubt I'll have a lot of patience with him if we carry on exactly as we were last season.

We were atrocious under him last season, and I'm not a fan of his in general, but we've got to put that aside and give him a chance to see how the season starts off. Won't be a long grace period if we are toilet, though, given that he has now had long enough to establish his ideas.

You know that Edson Alvarez played 6 games for Mexico in June and July? Completely different to someone who had 3 months off, innit?

In any case, he re-joined the squad about a week before Wilson started training, not a day or 2.
