​​​​​​In the past he's favoured a 3-4-3 formation...hard to see how we can do that currently with only 3 senior CBs, one of whom is injured. He's also played wingers (Solly March as an example) in the wing back roles.

Typically when a 3-4-3 gets announced on a match day the manager is immediately described as being too negative, too cautious etc. I guess it depends on the composition of the 4.

He's given young players chances...hopefully that continues at West Ham.

Potter proves he's just like every other manager we've had recently when it comes to youth.  All talk and no action.

Last season looked promising with Scarles getting a chance and some game time for Orford but despite the team being awful last season with nothing to lose, he decided to opt for the senior players and by the time the season finished we had a run of our final games where not a single youth player made the bench.

Today was a great chance for Potts who has impressed in pre-season but Potter once again decides to opt for the under-performing, over-paid average senior players.

Any talk of Potter being a good manager for the young players is bullshit and today another example of that.

It was the culmination of years of identifying players to match that style which is a constant regardless of the manager. 

Agree with your general point but I think you've got things a bit arse about tit regarding Potter's style of play. Brighton were a counter attacking side before Potter got there and he quickly turned them into a side with high possession and very little direct play, same as we've seen here.

If anything Brighton identified players who were tactically flexible, which is what you really need when the manager constantly changes formation. This also proved useful when they changed manager as the players quickly adapted to De Zerbi's less cautious brand of football and ended up having their best ever season.

I'm glad you read between the lines of what I was trying to get across.

I'm not a huge fan of Potter but I want to give him the benefit of the doubt. It's not going to be swashbuckling footie with the players he has to work with though is it?

Our owner seems to think that is possible without putting in the work to find players who are more adaptable to that type of football

That's the problem in a nutshell.

You need pace and mobility for fast, exciting counter attacking football but we lurch from one extreme to the other because when our owners employ a manager to do that it never happens.

This is because our haphazard Frank Spencer transfer policy signs players who are unsuitable to do that on top of the ones we already have in the squad from the low block, defensive football. So a manager is expected to do exciting football without the tools. It's like asking somebody to cook a Sunday roast without the use of any seasoning or spices.

Even the best chefs are gonna massively struggle without those!

You can't expect a manager to do exciting with midfielders who look like they are running through quicksand.

That is how a club should be run.

WH used to be a bit like that albeit on a shoestring most of the time but from the 50's to when Lyall left they did sign players to fit a style that didn't waver. They didn't always get those signings right but did have a good idea of what they wanted. When the budget was there in the late 70's we saw what Lyall did without the shoestring. Impressive shit!
