Re: Potter Out
When Carrick took charge of Boro near the relegation zone, the Transfer window was closed then an all, so he had to work only with what he's got which he did extremely well considering it was his first full time gig without any of his own players.
With regards to potential new signings with someone like Carrick is that gravitas thing he'd have that some players would be tempted to sign for because of who he is. That shit can help convince a player or two. Come on, no player ever found out that Graham fucking Potter was on the line wanting to speak to them about signing and they got all excited about the possibility. Carrick would be a different ball game for some by comparison to Potter trying to convince them to sign for him.

Makes me wonder why he went for Potter in the first place really.........were Dyche and Cooper still employed at the time?

What would make it even more intriguing is having Noble as a go-between of Board and someone like Carrick. Former Prem players and someone with a lot of knowledge with regards to the goings on at the Club that I could see him working well as a conduit between the two. Both schooled from our Academy with probably very similar philosophys of the game they were brought up on.
People ask for someone they could easily understand in Press Conferences and someone who would command respect from pretty much everyone with the gravitas Carrick clearly has in the game and not the shit scared imposter that currently looks like a recent escaped patient from the local nuthouse.

A well run club with it's ear to the progressive grapevine should keep in the loop regarding up and coming coaches or those who have done their badges and rated as most likely to succeed. A best in class so to speak. If the owner isn't serious about investing in a player analytics scouting database then there ain't much chance he is going to have another file with all the prospective coaches lined up either.
The type of guy who will throw in a few of the younger lads like Potts for example, and give them a defined role and say it's your chance - sink or swim but I expect you to swim because I back own ability as well as yours.
Louis Van Gaal was brilliant at this from when he started at Ajax and was still doing it right to the end (think Marcus Rashford) but coaches/managers are so fucking risk averse these days unless the owners have a progressive plan which enables the entire club to thrive at all levels.

I'm telling ya, it's this chap. It's him God damn it. Picture it...
No one better to guide the likes of Freddie Potts in to becoming a quality Defensive Midfielder knowing precisely what it takes at this level. He'd trust him, because he was that boy once himself with us.
Have to say I agree - I feel like there’s a coaching talent in Carrick. He will probably go somewhere and nail it at some point. Many Boro fans were sad to see him go.
Anybody who can make Chuba Akpom look good enough for Ajax must’ve been doing something right.
I reckon Carrick assisted by a gnarly, experienced former manager would get our mob behind him. He’s a 4-2-3-1 man, which would suit our best players currently starting out of position (Bowen, AWB and Paqueta). At least his sides have genuinely tried to get on the front foot, and from a starting position higher up the pitch than “eight men behind the ball low block” Partridge.
Might need to work on his team’s tempo, though. Some Boro fans thought their build up play could be slow. But that’s where an experienced assistant might help.
He’d still have to make a silk purse of a sow’s ear this season, of course. And, biggest problem of all, he’d have to work for Sullivan. So getting him here might be an ask.

I don’t have the same hatred for Lampard that many of you have and I’d be happy to see him come in. I think the players would certainly respect him for the career he has had and he plays the game the right way.
I've had a gut full of former Chelsea dogshit Managers ta - Zola, Grant, Potter. The fat cսnt can also stay well away from us forever the obese mess.

Re: Potter Out
I followed his career closely and at 1st took notice with his audition games he got as Caretaker Manager for Man Utd (a constant Club in crisis these days) from Ole Gunnar who went on a terrible run at the end leaving them in 7th.
Carrick comes in after a heavy loss to Watford 1-4 and instantly lifted the place with a 2-0 Away win at Villareal in the Champions League as his 1st ever managerial fixture - Emery was Manager. Then his 1st Prem game was Chelsea gaining a credible 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge - Tuchel was Manager. His final game was at Home against Arsenal where they won in style 3-2 - Arteta Manager. He got that troublesome attitude talented lad Sancho scoring twice in 2 games.
Then when he got his full time gig at Boro, he took them over around the same time as now right near the bottom of the Championship. He then got them in touching distance of going up losing out in the Play-Offs by finishing 4th. They were 21st position 1 place outside the relegation zone when he took over. Then the player sales began to happen and although he still got them to 8th and 10th last season. In the main he used to work well with young players and would try to play in a decent style and wasn't a chore with limited resources compared to what we have.
Others may not want Carrick and would regard it as a big risk, which is fair enough. I just weigh it up with where we currently are anyway with fuck all to lose and with little options available to be too choosey about it now.

Maybe so...he had to work with a very young squad at Boro - wasn't it the youngest in the entire division? They were wildly inconsistent which is to be expected but when it clicked which was quite often they did have a reputation for playing attractive, front foot football.
It would be interesting to see what he could do with a reasonably decent budget...there are much worse shouts than him...but we'll probably end up with ex-Boro Chris Wilder if Dyche isn't rubbing his thighs already...

It’s funny how very few teams at all have been successful with a back 3 in the PL. None of the top teams use it. Amorim is struggling trying to implement it here as well. I don’t get his obsession apart from pure ego and narcissism.
https://archive.is/FbwCF
from the article:The reason problems like this arise is because the team with three at the back tend to have only two midfielders sharing the responsibilities for covering the centre of the pitch. And when playing against teams with three midfielders that becomes a problem, unless another team-mate steps into midfield to offer support.I think I said something similar In the other thread. It’s not just about getting a midfielder or 2 in, you’d have to get superstar midfielders in to make this formation work in this league. You’re asking 2 players to outplay 3. And our back 3 are told to stay back or none will go into midfield to help out. It’s so fúndemetally flawed I don’t know why any press guy just doesn’t ask him about it and watch him foam at the mouth and being questioned about his fucking job.
The geezer really does my head in. I need to stop talking about him!
It's flawed and surely Potter can see that. If he wants to have any chance of saving his job he needs to change it and also get some legs in midfield even if that is from the under under 23's. But I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Potter Out
The trouble with all this is we get rid of Potter and we will still end up with another unemployed legend in their own lunchbreak who interviews really well - but never does much to elevate the players at his disposal on the pitch to anything more than survival mode - at best. Rinse and repeat.
Failing that, a crusty old has-been who ain't just yesterday's man but the day BEFORE yesterday's man expected to make a silk purse from the proverbial sow's ear. Like it's 1993 or something. Maybe our owner expects the romance in one of those hoary old baseball films where a coach wins the world series with a bunch of unmotivated, semi-alcoholic, useless bums and a ridiculously talented but dysfunctional young prodigy with a temper like Begbie from Trainspotting.

Everything our owner does is piecemeal, kneejerk and reactionary to the mess he creates in the first place so the club will always end up with a stick in the mud like Potter because he or somebody else will always be the symptom rather than the long term cause.
I have noticed that many are already falling into the old trap of blaming the manager thus taking the heat off of the main source.
This shit needs to end NOW!

I hate Sullivan’s wanky, outdated “he’s got two games to save his job” briefings.
After 20 matches, mostly of utter shit, either you believe in Potter as a manager or you don’t.
If we get annihilated at Wolves is Sullivan genuinely going to think “well, we said two games - so let’s see if we can get a draw against Forest…”
All the poisonous midget is doing is dragging us beyond the transfer deadline so any potential new manager is lumped with the shit we have at that point, and can’t spend.
Potter WILL be sacked soon. Because he just isn’t good enough.

I reckon he will use this game to reintroduce our 'cup goalie' areola, and start Wilson in place of fullkrug and play some of the others who featured in preseason. If we get a result he can play the same team on Sunday without losing face over his bad choices v sunderland and chelsea.threesixty wrote: ↑24 Aug 2025, 20:53 Be interesting to see if the ego maniac realises he’s in the shit and tries to play his strongest team for Wolves. If he were smart he’d change the formation and put his strongest team out for wolves and use it as the match to prepare for Forest and spurs.
My guess is he doesn’t know what the words “panic” and “emergency” means. And will just say do the same as he did at Chelsea. Stand on the touch line saying fuck all and look like there’s some grand conspiracy against his perfect football theories…

Walking out after the fourth on Friday was the same feeling as the 6-0 vs Arsenal under Moyes. There is no coming back.
Dont think there's any danger of us winning that cup game. It's almost definitely a loss, the only question is by how much.
