West Ham agree deal for Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes

By David Ornstein and Jacob Tanswell

West Ham have agreed a deal for Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

The deal is set to be worth £38million ($51.3m) with £3m worth of add-ons and a 15 per cent sell-on clause.

The 21-year-old Portugal youth international will be West Ham’s sixth signing of the summer, with the London side also in talks to sign midfielder Soungoutou Magassa from Monaco.

Fernandes joined Southampton in the summer of 2024 from Sporting CP and has made 46 appearances for the south-coast side that got relegated last season, scoring four goals and registering seven assists. He has played 36 times for Portugal’s youth teams up to under-21 level but is yet to make a senior international appearance.

Southampton were relegated from the Premier League last season with seven games still to play, only a year after their promotion.

West Ham have lost their opening three games of the 2025-26 season, two in the Premier League and one against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday. They are next in action away to Nottingham Forest on Sunday in the league.

Interesting how some people just have to find a way to be negative. Judge him once you’ve watched him play for us, maybe?

Surely if we are skint we are better off going to identify the next one for £12m instead of paying over 3 times as much for this guy a year later after a shocking season?
1) that was he was premier league proven- have a peek at any saints forum you will see he was about their only positive last season, so its much less of a risk

2) we're desperate now and don't have the luxury of taking measured risks

3) its hours before deadline day,

4) you're assuming we've actually done any further homework on suitable players

Not sure you've been paying attention last few seasons but we're not exactly great at spotting young talent before anyone else and taking the risk, so failing that I'd rather they pay over the odds on the next best thing, players that others took a risk on and bedded them in

Nobody did that, they were just examples of players that played in shocking teams that weren't shocking themselves... You forgot Bowen 😉

as far as I can see no one's done that, they've just been used to refute the silly theory no player can have a good season playing in the middle for a shit team

He played virtually every game at the heartbeat of the worst prem team ever.

Did yoy watch those games?

Cause I know I didn't, they also had a manager who wanted to play niave football in the Premier League... I bet you were shocked Arsenal bought Rice who was at the heart beat of a team that lost 20 out of 38 games and I bet you'd be amazed if anyone wanted Bowen as we actually looked worse than Southampton for large parts of the season, IIRC they played us off the park twice last season... But yeah you're right if they finished bottom all their players must be shit... I'm also amazed we were able to get rid of Joe Cole and Jermain Defoe for sizeable fees back in the day after we finished bottom.
So you're telling me he had a really good season, good enough for his price to triple in a year his team got 12 points but you didnt watch any of their games......righto....

I watched Soton when we played them, i also watched them few times on TV. I don't remember this bloke standing out, or anyone mentioning him much last season at all.....or much in the off season. We seem to be the only team in for him.

Not sure what Rice or Bowen or anyone from 2003 has to do with it. Strange to even mention them.

So yeah until anyone can tell me why he was so amazing last season to merit him tripling in price i'll side with caution on this one.

So we've been tracking this player for ages which no doubt means we watched a lot of him last season... And then went back with an offer... I doubt he had a shocking season.. You've just assumed he did... Because they did.. That's why I mentioned the others because they weren't shocking even though we were it was an example of players that played well in shocking teams... But you must know what my point is...

Oh and why has his fee tripled, I agree it's over the top but we wanted him and they didn't want to sell, but doubling you would expect.. No PL experience when he signed abd now he's proved he can handle the league and was also on a long contract. Its quite standard actually for players coming into the league. But if you think we paid over the odds for a player we tracked for over a season while watching him be shocking...

so did Carrick and Sinclair for us in 2003, along with Defoe up front with 11 goals, playing every game for a relegated team doesn't automatically make their individual effort shocking
Ok so please explain why he had a really good season to merit his price tripling in value?

Did he play for Derby in 2007 then?
Were you even born then?      The Soton team last season given the amount spent were far worse than he Derby team IMO.

Jaan Kenbrovin" wrote: 28 Aug 2025, 22:50 This transfer deal highlights everything that is wrong with David Sullivan. Spends £40m on a championship player that was available for £15m the season before.

He's going to have to play like Zidane to gain that sort of increase in value here.

Yes, Chelsea just paid 40M for Garnacho who isn't exactly a slouch.

I’d rate Garnacho as the most overrated player in the league. For every overhead goal against Everton, he makes countless wrong decisions. I don’t see it being a long stay at Chelsea before he ends up moving down the trajectory. If he wasn’t an Argie who came through at (a majorly shit) Man United, Chelsea wouldn’t even be looking at him. They love a signing like this.

Thought Guido to Espanyol was happening, presumably he didn’t fancy Saudi
Read that Irving had turned down Wrexham due to wages offered and interest was now coming from MILLWALL
Think he’d be a good Championship player
If we are still chasing Hackney of Boro maybe could fit him in that deal

We’re terrible at buying/selling players so I’m hoping this lad bucks the trend.

hopefully this means Guido is out the door.
