I thought forest were more than decent and it was the introduction of Summerville that caused them problems.

I was very nervous around 60 mins when we were pinned into the box, it seemed inevitable they were going to score, I was expecting us to collapse and it going 3-0 the other way, but somehow we survived. We still have a lot of work to do, definitely haven't turned the corner yet.

Like many things in life, its usually a combination of things. Tactics and formations a big part of it but it is hard in the Prem Lge nowadays without players that are strong, athletic and pacy. Fernandes helped and changing JWP for Irvine was key too. Him and Soucek or Guido always likely to run out of steam by 60 mins. They have to work harder than most as they are a yard slower.

But its one game. Forest are not used to having that much of the ball and us being happy to give them the bigger share worked against them. With 4 in midfield ( out of possession ) and at the back, we were a lot more compact and sat behind the ball but they struggled to get in behind or cause problems with balls whipped in to Wood etc. We had been leaving big gaps in midfield with the 2 wingbacks bombing on.

Spurs will be happy to dominate possession and with the onus on us being the home side, its a different challenge. We will need to take more risks going forward? Summerville still not ready to start I would imagine but it would be good to see him coming on a bit earlier around 60 mins to test the Spurs defence.  Magassa? Probably wont start but hoping he can maintain the stats he has in the French lge, for tackles, duels and interceptions, in the faster, more intense Prem Lge. If so, we should become harder to get thru and around.

I’m not entirely surprised by the result so much. As I’ve always felt we have the players to be competitive (even without the new additions). I’m more surprised that Potter went to a back 4 after about 8 months and a preseason insisting he knew what he was doing.

The last “great game” I remember us playing recently was against Newcastle with Loppy, I think we we won 3 nil? Again, Loppy decided to use the squad properly (Soler and Paq in midfield) and we showed we could do it. Subsequently he dropped that line up for the next game and we lost again.

My point is that we blame the players a lot , maybe cos they get paid a lot regardless of how well the team perform, and even if we go down they leave or still get paid. So we are generally upset with them by default.

But so much of the game is down to the manager and what he tells them to do. At this level with the caliber of players out there it’s all about the manager really. I don’t buy all this “player can’t compete at this level” crap. If they don’t do exactly what the manager tells them they don’t get picked. So you have you have to imagine that whatever is going on out there is because the manager wants it to happen.

Also, the game is in phases. Summerville worked well at the end of the match because they were chasing and a bit tired so there were massive gaps to run into. Forest normally sit back like we used to under Moyes. So much of Forests game like any counter attacking side is about who scores first and at what time that happens. Also, even if Wilson is the better striker we have 2 injury prone over 30 yr olds leading the line. We have to balance it out minutes wise I think.

Time will tell...
I was thinking about this this morning. I don't think they really tested our defence to be fair. There were a few shots on target but Roberto 2.0(am I too unkind this early in the season?) wasn't asked to do much to save them. However I do think our attack was a different proposition when Summerville came on and although it come up against a complacent and tired Forest it's going to be a threat to most teams in the league. Even that walloping against Chelsea it was managing to get forward and cause Chelsea problems until the second half.

So in my view the clean sheet flattered us, but we have got plenty of goals in us this season.

Not convinced it would work.  AWB suffers from lack of positional awareness and general awareness of what's going on around him...he's great with a one on one coming his way and a clear line of sight....but that 360 degree awareness you need in CM...not sure.

If I was to try and 'convert' anyone, think I'd be looking at Todibo.  Otherwise he could end up looking a very expensive mistake at CB.

I must admit that I keep opening this thread just to look at the score and however many times I do so, I still feel that I've woken up in a parallel universe (or am still asleep and we are being soundly schooled while I snore).

Bit of legs and physicality in midfield and we looked rather better and more competitive. Not a surprise. I feel like Fernandes gave Paqueta a bit of inspiration and HOPE that we can actually play some football which lifted him. He must he felt depressed watching JWP and Guido manfully trying but just running in treacle game after game.

Like most, I didn't predict this result. Obviously delighted with it. But once again, West Ham have confounded me. Before the game, I had unusually nailed my colours to the mast and had decided that I was Potter out! But I now have to admit that yesterday Potter got the tactics bang on. Four at the back, timely substitutions that included the introduction of pace down the left. Added to that he took a somewhat brave decision to drop AWB, favouring KWP, who had a very solid game. Mavropanos also put in a solid performance, and Diouf was good as an attacking full back, not just a wing back. Fernandes had very promising start and took a load off Paqueta. The jury is still out on Mads and I was very nervous when their corners were coming in under the bar in a crowded box but he managed to survive but did not enfuse confidence.

One swallow doesn't make a summer, anyway we are now officially into Autumn, but I am now just a tad more hopeful it won't be a Winter of Discontent and I'll give Potter a stay of execution. I have always been a soft touch.

Really the game had 0-0 written all over it but for a bit of inspiration late in the game from Summerville and Bowen to break the deadlock.

I thought our cheapskate freebie signings Wilson and KWP did well again. Summerville will be like a new signing, I always rated him from his Leeds days and said last Summer he was our best signing of that Summer (when all the morons were still creaming themselves over Steidten and the signings of Kilman, Todibo, Füllkrug etc.).
You didn't watch the game did you?

Mads didn't have a save to make and we looked rock solid, if you want to get a second opinion just go on youtube and watch a Nottingham Forest blog. even they say we deserved it and they were second best all day.

You have embarrassed yourself once again.
You still vehemently Potter out?

While we're talking about embarrassing comments, how lazy was Paqueta again... As usual he made our most recoveries, a very odd stat for a lazy player.

I tend to wait until everything has calmed down before commenting, yesterday was much better on so many fronts, 4 at the back we seem better suited to, AWB although lively has lapses and KWP looks more stable, midfield of Paq and Fernandez had more bite, playing Bowen where he’s best suited and playing Summerville LW and we looked good, pleased for Hermansen keeping a clean sheet and no fuck ups and strangely pleased to be proven wrong by Wilson even though they’ve been cameo appearances. Address the slowness of JWP and Soucek (bench only for me) and we have a decent shape and team. Too early to say whether Potter has had an epiphany or just thought fuck it I’m gone if something doesn’t change, we’ll see. Much nicer waking up Monday morning to a bit of positivity.

Anyone else wanted to play the yids straight after the final whistle?

What the fuck are you talking about?  Our defence gave them literally nothing. And then he brought on two subs, and it changed the game. No luck about it, it should have been 4 or 5 nil.

Sels made 3 great saves , 2 from deflected shots , plus Wilson tackled Bowen to prevent a certain goal
The score WAS flattering
Should have been 7 (SEVEN)

Great result, don't think many would have backed 3-0 on 80 mins.  Summerville has made me feel like we can have a push at the top 4 if he stays fit rather than relegation battle!

4 at the back suits us better, thought KWP and Mavro both done well.

Fernandes and Paqueta both were great, they keep that up we should be fine. Wilson was a real positive aswell, Fullkrug tries but just doesnt look quick or strong enough for the prem.

Nice to feel like our season has started, need to follow it up with a performance against Spurs rather than just a one off

I think most games now are boring, it's the way football is, overly tactical.

We played well today overall, scored 3 goals, their keeper made 3 world class saves, and Wilson took one off the boot of Bowen. Fuck knows what more you expect from an away game.
Robbie Savage made exactly the same point on 606.  Sterile, he called it.

On today's albeit limited evidence if Wilson stays fit he could turn out to be a half decent signing.

A decent goalscorer and looks like he fancies the job
We just need to give him the service like he got today..
