West Ham United sign Igor Julio on loan



West Ham United is pleased to announce the signing of Brazilian defender Igor Julio on a season-long loan from Brighton & Hove Albion.

The 27-year-old centre-back brings strength, composure and impressive passing ability to East London, adding depth and quality to Head Coach Graham Potter’s squad.

With over 200 senior appearances across top leagues in England, Italy and Austria - and European experience with both Fiorentina and Brighton - Igor will provide both quality and competition.

“I am really happy to be here at West Ham United,” said Igor. “It is a big Club, a historic Club, with fantastic support and a special identity. I saw this in Prague during the Europa Conference League final two years ago, and I feel very proud to now be representing the colours.

“The project here is very exciting - there are many good players at the Club and I know that there is a very positive environment in the dressing room that it will be great to be a part of.

There's an element of me that thinks he's positioning for the PSR or squad cost ratio stuff that will affect us end of this season when either the regulations change, or the Rice sale falls off the books. 

Both could be quite significant, and none of us really know the position for that. I want him gone as much as the next guy, but the focus on wage reduction is quite likely with that in mind.

Time will tell if it was smart or not.

Plus through prestige they now have this model where they sign a load of players, don't play them, then flog them for more a year or two later because of who they were with.

No one really has sight of the West Ham books and what is being spent in cash terms ( amortisation of transfers etc  ) the loan interest payments, transfer fee instalments out etc etc. We get to see published accounts far later after the accountants have closed them, summarised them and include inter company transfers etc. We know that recruitment has been nothing short of horrendous over the 15 years of Sullivan’s tenure / ownership. Everything has been financed via borrowing against future revenues. Like someone who maxes out credit cards, gets a new card to pay off existing ones and debts grow etc. 

If Sullivan is spending as little as possible to keep us in the Prem Lge and cutting wages etc to make us more attractive to potential buyers it would be ok but he’s not is he. And the other board members and shareholders are culpable, for allowing Sullivan and Brady to make such a mess. They obviously have zero long term interest in West Ham being a more successful football team. Its just about the financials, an investment, an asset in their portfolios nothing else. They are all parasites clinging on in hope of turning a profit at some point. 

A few injuries and we are in trouble.

According to the salary estimates of Capology, we've reduced our annual salary budget by about 25%....shaving pretty much £25m off the annual salary budget.

Yes, shareholder loan interest charges are now zero and have been since November 20221, when those loans were repaid.

Of those repaid loans of £53.5 million, £44 million attracted interest at 4%, £9.5 million were interest free.

Im sure at one stage the loans were accruing at 8% and when there was a public outcry they graciously reduced the rate to 4% because they loved the club so much.

 

 

8% was a decent market rate when the loans were given. I would say the owners were a little tardy in reducing the rate to 4% (maybe they took this piss for a year), but 4% was a decent market rate thereafter. You can complain about them taking any interest at all - most owners don't,  but the rate was NOT usurous.

What Sullivan has done is correctly judge that the asset value of football clubs in general was going to go sky-high and that the Olympic Stadium was a white elephant that would inevitably accrue to West Ham's advantage. He then did the very minimum to keep West Ham's PL status and thus accrue a vast, though as yet unrealised, capital appreciation.

I don't think he has actually 'gouged' the club in any way, but he has been a skin-flint owner.

If they aint going to sack him off the back of 3 bad losses to Sunderland, Chelsea and Wolves going out the Cup 1st game (same as in FA Cup), as well as a poor half of the season with zero pressure with a shocking win ratio, then they won't get rid of him anytime soon. The correlation between league places and wage bill is supposedly very strong...so dramatically cutting wage bill could be a notable predictor of decline in expected league place.

Cant say I'm impressed by our business today. I'll give Igor the benefit of doubt as I've had to watch Kilman for a year. Have to give him a chance. Fernandes a good addition, Magassa I'm hoping will adapt to the league quickly. Diouf is settling and showing his quality. I hope Summerville and Guilherme can bring direct play and pace. Guilherme isnt a wing back. When he is back from injury, he needs a chance. 

I am worried about not having a younger speedier striker, I do think another quality midfielder would have been good but we couldnt shift dead wood we paid silly salaries to. 

I think our new keeper will prove to be half decent. Perhaps not peak Fabianski but Aerola was shocking in pre season. 

It's not a team that is winning much but if we steer clear of injuries to Bowen and other key players we will be mid mediocrity and not relegated. Expect another shit transfer window in January.

Is it though? Not investing but running the club a million times better so it’s not even necessary. There is always money available for numerous signings and he always gets good prices for departing players. Makes it even more damning for Sullivan.
